Better late than never, methinks. I’ve been working on a campaign this week and I am pretty much running behind on everything in life. Also, note that I am planning on switching servers and upgrading the blog over the weekend so my site may be down very temporarily. Now, onto The Week in Pictures!

Cutting through the nastiest strip of Portland is 82nd (a.k.a. The Avenue of Roses). Run down motels line the street and their signs are all pretty amazing. One of my favorites is the Del Rancho. A perfect slice of Americana!

One of Joey’s newest paintings, a portrait of Morrissey has taken up residence in the white room. My dad stopped by yesterday and kept saying “Who is that again? What did he do? What’s his name?” Hahaha.

The living room at Wolfgang Manor makes me think of a ski lodge that hosts meetings for the Black Arts. Let’s just say that Motley Crue would feel at home here. My brother just built this coffee table and of course, it’s black which matches the black floors and nearly black walls…and the black bear in the corner.

Sometimes, pit stops at IKEA for pillows, cutting boards, steel table tops and other domestic necessities is absolutely necessary.

I’m still enamored with the Oyster Bar. I love how every time I walk in, it feels like I’m in the bottom of a 100 year old ship.

This is way too funny. Remember how I showed you the Mystery Machine that’s parked in my neighborhood a few weeks back? Well, I took a closer look and realized that there’s a sticker on the back which reads, “Don’t Laugh. Your daughter may be inside.” I decided not to peek in the windows….

I noticed this sign at least a month after I finished the design for Semiospectacle but love the similar style. Eat a vegan breakfast here – it’s goooood.

Okay, back to work for me! Enjoy your weekend!

Greetings and salutations! The sun is out, one of my good friends stopped by unexpectedly for a visit last night, Rocky has a shiny new red collar, I’ve been doing work for a rad local agency, my dad is taking me out to lunch this afternoon, I got some new supplies (see above) and a massive birthday party is going down at a local distillery for two of my friends tonight. To say that life is good is a major understatement.

I’m pretty sure that I mentioned last week that Beauty Bar has a photo booth upstairs. When my friend Pam and I stopped by, of course we had to try it out and attempted our best Home Alone impressions.

I had the best meeting ever with Solestruck yesterday. The Director of Operations and I met to talk design (and shoes). Some of the new brands they’re bringing in for fall made my heart skip a beat. The very best of the best; specific styles of impossible-to-find brands that I had unknowingly saved images of to my desktop weeks ago. They’re definitely on the pulse of what’s cool. We’re going to start collaborating soon on design and I can’t wait.

I thought this was pretty funny – at the Solestruck store, a single Clinic was locked in a glass case built into the wall.

Liberty of London just did a capsule collection for Target featuring their bold floral patterns with a retro twist. I immediately snapped up this slip to wear under summer dresses. To me, the pattern is reminiscent of 60s bed sheets.

Welcome to my life. I feel like I live at my desk. These days, the only escape I make is to go to the coffee shop (Hi, Speedboat!), the post office or meetings.

This last week has been so good! One of my best friends in the entire universe, Star was in town over the weekend for Stumptown Comics Fest and we did our best to make up for lost time. We try to get together at least once a year and have zig-zagged the U.S. between New York, LA and Portland to make it happen.

week in pictures

When we’re together, the running joke is that we turn into a two-headed monster known as Stubby. Our mutual friend Kaebel of Sequential Art took us on a mini tour of Portland and we discovered a photo booth at Backspace.

Last Friday when I was staying at the Jupiter, Star stopped by and we proceeded to have a late night dinner (1 AM, holla!) at the Doug Fir. It was her first time there and is still one of my favorite places to take visitors.

Some seemingly innocent snapshots of Rocky came out more like modeling head shots. Time to put that boy to work! Dog food and designer sweaters aren’t cheap!

I was pretty excited to go to Portland’s outpost of the Beauty Bar with my friend Pam this week. I’ve been to some of the others that are scattered across the U.S. but this one was the best by far. The paint colors, decor and cute drinks merged perfectly. So cute!

I’m not much of a comics buff myself but a lot of my friends are so I try to make it to Stumptown every year to support them. I ended up spending a few hours on Saturday snuggled up next to Star and John C. Worsley. Notice how we all had grumpy faces at first and had to put on a little show for the camera. Really, we only play friends on the interwebz!

My favorite discovery at Stumptown was a comic about homeless dinosaurs. The dinosaurs themselves put on a pretty convincing act, holding signs that read “THE END IS NEAR. I WAS RIGHT 65 MILLION YEARS AGO, TOO” and “LOST MY JOB. IT TAKES 7 GALLONS OF BOOZE TO GET ME DRUNK. PLEASE HELP.” I was sold.

Welcome to The Week in Pictures! I was having some major site issues over the last few days but thanks to the web ninjas known as Star and John C. Worsley, everything should be smooth sailing!

It cracks me up that there’s always a Mystery Machine parked right around the corner from my house. Scoobydoobydoooooooo! Haha.

Joey and I wanted to go out the other night but our local bar didn’t allow drinks outside at the picnic tables so we waltzed in with Rocky. Nobody seemed to care. It was his first time at a bar but don’t fret…he’s 21 in dog years!

Type and lips and studs, oh my! These are a few of my favorite things. I’m not big on fancy jewelry at all. I prefer red, black and white along with piles of acrylic.

Last Friday, I volunteered to do portfolio reviews at PNCA and it was an enlightening experience in part because it was my first time sitting on the other side of the table since graduating two years ago. I distinctly remember what it was like and how nervous I was. I never want to be the Simon Cowell of portfolio reviews – design is so personal and while it’s important to be honest, staying constructive and providing advice that is legitimately helpful goes a long way.

I saw the latest issue of O yesterday while in line at the grocery store and thought, “Ah, why the hell not?” Someone gave me a copy probably 8 years ago and it had some of the cleanest, most crisp editorial design at the time. Inspiration is lurking everywhere! The mag and these shoes paired together practically scream “SPRING!”

Readers, do you have any awesome weekend plans?

It seems that Paris has taken up residence in my bedroom between Joey’s art shows. At any given time, my house resembles a bizarre, futuristic movie set.

One of my favorite rooms has always been the little back room off the kitchen. It’s the perfectly cozy breakfast nook. In the next week, we’re getting a stainless steel table and mod white chairs. The oddest part of the room? It came with a mirrored wall. It’s like the Bavarian inhabitants of this abode went all disco in the 70s and needed a place to have dance parties.

On Friday, I paid a visit to Exhibit A, by far my favorite Nemo show yet. I loved the use of type and light boxes paired with the desolate landscapes that dotted the photography.

My little gnome table has been keeping me company since 2002. That’s through three moves! He always finds a way to help out by holding a plant or other odds and ends. He just moved into my dressing room last week and is valiantly assisting with my shoes now.

Just in case you’re wondering, that’s not a Black AmEx…more like a Bank of America debit card. No Barney’s shopping sprees for you, Auntie Nubs! This week has consisted of errand running, photo booth fun and sorting through piles of tax receipts. I need to remind myself this year to sort the receipts by month as I go so I’m not up until 3 a.m. breaking a sweat. All those plane tickets and lattes do add up, though!

On my way to the coffee shop this weekend, I noticed this car parked in someone’s side yard. Pretty charming. Though, I’d hate to parallel park that baby.

After running errands, Joey and I usually end up at The Ace. With Clyde Common on one side and Stumptown on the other, I always recommend it to out-of-towners who are wanting to stay downtown.

Of course, a stop at The Ace isn’t complete without a few sittings in the photo booth. Since it takes debit cards, I always go a little overboard…and then wake up, log in to my checking account and wonder what multiple $4.00 charges are from.

This week, I had a total first. You may remember that I designed some custom racing numbers for my friend Jason’s son a few months ago. One day, I received a text from him, mentioning that he was going to get them tattooed across his chest. I just figured that he was drunk…but he was dead serious. He just invited me along to take photos. Go, Jason!

I spent most of my week with the Nemo HQ crew which was especially good because the boys indulged me with Journey tunes two days in a row. This is the first time in a long while that I can say that I’m truly excited about all the projects I’m working on and though tired, I am endlessly inspired.

My daily urban uniform tends to be pretty basic and usually revolves around a black palette. I’ve been working at agencies around town a lot lately and semi-early mornings call for streamlined, pre-planned outfits. Black skinny jeans, fitted shirt, tiny studded belt, wedges, statement necklace and oversized black cardigan (not shown) are my staples.

I was recently inspired by Amelia Arsenic’s daily documentation of her looks and I, too remember the camgirls that populated the internet 10+ years ago. It only takes a few seconds to get a snap and it’s always fun to look back.

I love shoes and I love Oprah. I was working on a type-based project today and needed content. Instead of reaching for the good ol’ lorem ipsum, I pulled up some inspiring Oprah quotes. I have a soft spot for anyone that’s self-made and she is a shining example. The shoes are the Jeffrey Campbell Clinics that I had on backorder for a million years. Find yours over at Solestruck.
