How was your week? Mine was good — we wallpapered one of our living room walls, squeezed in some nice long walks, got started on a few other home repairs and worked on a D.I.Y. project that I can’t wait to share with you.

week in pictures

Our living room has always been pretty lifeless — with plain white walls and all black furniture, floors and even an all black globe, it just never felt welcoming. I’d searched high and low for the perfect wallpaper but after coming up empty-handed one too many times, we decided to stick with the tried-and-true Cole & Son Woods (our dining room is done in the same pattern and we already had some left over to get started). Next up: colored throw pillows and well, some more color in general so people actually want to hang out in there! Additional room details: we stained the floors black ourselves, the two black chairs are Ebay knock-offs, the curtains are from Urban Outfitters and the blanket is the Cross by Pia Wallén.

One of my style resolutions at the starting of the year was to try new things — patterns, colors and silhouettes. This dress, though not my typical style, was love at first sight. Full debut coming soon!

We got on a roll and decided it was time to revamp the workbench in the basement. Our basement is dark, ancient and a little bit scary so we picked out the brightest paint possible to paint the workbench with. Have you ever seen such a great paint name?!

One of my favorite things to do on the weekends is to head to the park and get a good walk in with Rocky. Of course he attempts to torment dogs 10 times his size which is always good for a laugh!

week in pictures

I don’t have the chance to participate in nearly enough D.I.Y. projects. Joey had an idea I never would have considered on my own and after finishing up my design, he turned it into something really special. I can’t wait to show you!

week in pictures

I feel like the summer is passing by so quickly. In year’s past, one of my favorite haunts was the fire pit at the Doug Fir so my friend and I caught up for a few hours last night. Brings back so many good memories. Have a great weekend — any projects or plans you can’t wait to get started on?

What a week. Major deadlines, really late nights, friends and family in town, too many lattes. Glad to have made it through! I sat down last night and started reading a new book that I’m really excited about. As soon as I finish I’ll post a review. Feeling really, really inspired. I need to remind myself to never underestimate the power of words on paper (and to read more often).

My current desktop looks like this (in the dark). I LOVE this cover of USED Magazine so much!

Even though it seemed like I spent the last few days of my life shackled to a computer, I did manage to squeeze in some fun times earlier in the week. My mom was in town visiting and during some downtime, we visited Target. I feel like I’m so busy working that I never shop in stores anymore? It was really nice to wander the aisles for a change! Anyway, it was like a color explosion. Rainbows of awesomeness everywhere. I was recruited to work on a Target campaign earlier this year….wish it would have worked out because I love what they do. And, how good is that top packaging?!

Since my mom was in town, we drove Rocky out to the suburbs to visit his ‘grandma.’ He loves riding in a car and hangs his head out the window to feel the breeze in his hairdo! The next morning, my mom and aunt took me out to breakfast and when they ordered coffee, the cream came in baby bottles! The stars aligned that day because when I got home, my dad stopped by to help me with some house projects. Then, my grandpa called to let me know he was at a bar down the street. I live in the city and he’s an hour and a half away in the mountains so I was really surprised to find him 10 blocks from my house, gambling and having a beer! Everyone calls him Sharky — he’s in his 80s and still out-parties me! A few days later, I was standing in line at a coffee shop and noticed these doll arms peeking out of the planter. Totes creepy and awesome!

week in pictures

When Joey and I were shooting outfit photos in Ladd’s Addition over the weekend, I noticed this house. Pretty amazing, huh? I think that people imagine that most of Portland looks like Ladd’s….I love the tree-lined streets and beautiful old houses. Reminds me of a fairytale.

Soooo….I have a thing for this llama, Nigel. We’ve met on many occasions and visit at least once a year. Everyone seems to know about our friendship. Last year, I walked into a bar and the first thing my friend’s boyfriend said was, “So, I hear you have a relationship with a llama.” Haha! When I heard he was going to be in town this week, I raced downtown to R.E.I. and circled the building. No Nigel. I paced around the store in all black and Adidas wedges, looking slightly out of place amidst the camping gear. I finally found Nigel’s owners, Wallowa Llamas giving their slide show about backpacking in Eastern Oregon (the llamas carry the gear) and they told me that Nigel’s trailer had broken down. No Nigel this time! You should have seen my friend and I whip out our planners, trying to find an open weekend to go visit him. Wallowa was beyond entertained and even offered to bring him down to the hotel in town to hang with us. We’d probably try to squeeze Nigel into a sweater and do his hair so not a good idea! Ahhh, Nigel. He loves the attention! Another reason to visit Nigel on his native territory: he fathered his first baby last year named Rhubabrb! I asked around and nobody seems to know who the mom is. ;)

One of my go-to daily lipsticks is NARS Love Devotion. It adds a touch of warmth to my deathly pallor. Oh, and yesterday two dozen Voodoo Donuts magically appeared. I normally skip them because years ago I worked at an agency that was doing a campaign with Mountain Dew and Voodoo delivered Dew-infused donuts with neon green frosting. People were taking bites, turning around and spitting them back out. I’m not into funky flavors so I played it as safe as I could with a tiny sprinkle donut. Finally, my friend Star is in town! She has a solo show at Sequential Art Gallery that you must see. It’s got some amazing installation pieces and much of the work is composed of wood and acrylic.

You know how there’s always lost pet posters tacked up everywhere? I always wonder if they made it home and this poster totally made my morning. Tabor the cat not only made it home but walked in smelling like grandma’s roses! And just look at that seductive pose! Gotta love a happy ending. Have a great weekend!

My office is the cleanest and most organized it’s ever been. And now I’m ready to conquer the longest design to-do list I’ve ever had.

An inspirational poster, perhaps? You be the judge.

Switching things up with new colors: I picked up this trio of Face Stockholm polishes at a J. Crew store in Phoenix and am still enjoying making small changes from my normal beauty routine.

Every time I wear this textured silk bomber jacket by Quail, everyone wants to pet me.

I just happened to witness the funniest photo shoot ever that included very large hunting knives.

The current wallpapers on my desktop and laptop: Black and white and minimal.

My default everyday shoes: Minimarket zipper wedges. I love these so much that I’m on my third pair.

Isn’t this type great? I love discovering design inspiration in unlikely places.

We’ve got small Bavarian-inspired touches scattered throughout our home. I especially love this vintage piece from an old cuckoo clock in the kitchen nook.

One of my favorite outfits: a red plaid vintage skirt from Etsy paired with Cheap Monday patent wedges.

There’s a ramen place with really great branding on Water Street in Portland called Boke Bowl. It’s always packed but definitely worth visiting.

This is a little old but here’s a peek of what I packed for my Phoenix trip.

The design necessities: my Pantone notebook, Moleskine planner, pens and tea. Have a great weekend and I’ll see you back here to share a design project I just finished (and am super happy with) on Monday!

Last week was in spent Phoenix on a glorious sun-filled post-Christmas vacation. I visited my mom, ate as much as I possibly could (and followed that up with dessert), took three mile long walks down cactus-lined streets, visited the mall, went to bed early and took the opportunity to pause and think about what I wanted to accomplish in the new year.

week in pictures

I arrived at the airport in Phoenix with my laptop tucked into my American Apparel Cities tote, walked out to the curb and a Cadillac swung around and picked me up almost instantaneously.

week in pictures

A lot of people who have never visited Phoenix imagine that it is flat and barren but in reality, my mom’s house is surrounded by mountains. It’s beautiful.

week in pictures

On the road again. When I wasn’t eating, I was shopping. When I wasn’t shopping, I was eating. That’s what vacation is for!

week in pictures

During the long, cold and rainy winters in Portland, I spend way too much time hiding out inside. Sitting outside in short sleeves, soaking up the sun was a welcome relief.

week in pictures

I made time to visit Barneys and caress every single handbag they had on display.

week in pictures

This was my favorite spot in my mom’s back yard for idle phone chit-chat.

week in pictures

Phoenix has the most beautiful sunsets.

week in pictures

Getting my hair trimmed and styled was awesome. My hairdresser even backcombed it into a little bouffant…that promptly fell flat, as usual.

week in pictures

Sitting outside at restaurants (in December) is just one of the many reasons why I love Phoenix.

week in pictures

I’m back home now in Portland, terribly missing Phoenix (and my mom). I’m still playing catch-up with photos and a massive 2012 to-do list so I’ll have a ton of awesome visuals to share for next Friday’s Week In Pictures. Enjoy your weekend!

week in pictures

On Sunday, Joey, Rocky and I headed out of town for an overnight stay in Hood River. We didn’t do a whole lot or take many photos — instead, we just enjoyed escaping the city for a day. I loved some of the old signs around town. Rocky came along with us everywhere, even though he had to be carried like a baby and smuggled into a few places!

Served with Love

week in pictures

When we got home, Joey made us homemade popcorn on the stove. Served up in a heart-shaped bowl, of course.

Nice Menu

week in pictures

I totally admit to being drawn into ordering food based on the design of the menus. This one is from the Slingshot Lounge.

Key to the Content

week in pictures

Remember how I mentioned my new LaCie IamaKey USB drive a few weeks back? I decided to start wearing it as a necklace — that way, when I am making the rounds between multiple agencies and computers, I am always prepared. Though, maybe I look more like a latch key kid. ;)

The Shoes that Started it All

week in pictures

They keep me company in my office every day. My favorite thing that Michael Kors has ever designed! Now I wish that I had gotten all the weird colors they came in at the time.

Fiction

week in pictures

I’ve been a little incognito from the internet for the last week because I’ve been working with the Fiction team. Such a nice bunch of folks!

I’m gonna finish up this week, take some photos in the new pile of stuff that just showed up from Urban Outfitters, go out for a nice dinner and wrap up a couple of freelance projects. What about you? Got any big plans?

Weekend Date at Saint Cupcake

week in pictures

This weekend, I met my friend girl Joey for coffee and after awhile, we realized that the holy grail of sweet treats, Saint Cupcake was just a few doors down. One is never enough. Ever. They also do vegan versions of a few varieties if you’re interested!

Office Overhaul Continued

week in pictures

week in pictures

I’m still not quite done with my office – I just ordered a zinc colored Eames Aeron chair (worth every penny when you sit all day) and still need to find a suitable rug. But! I stole the desk we had in the white room and now I have three times the space to work! So unbelievably nice. I especially like the storage inside of the ‘legs.’

Goggles!

week in pictures

The guys at Smith Optics kindly sent me samples of the goggles I designed, along with one of the helmets. I’m spreading the love and sending two of my best friends a pair so they can get some use – though I’m keeping the super cute, thin strapped girl’s ones for myself!

Rush Hour

The road home from Nike any time near 5 PM is a long one.

Cozy Breakfast

week in pictures

week in pictures

On Sunday, Auntie Nubs joined Joey and I for a delightful vegan breakfast at Paradox. Of course, she always packs along her camera and snaps away, for better or worse. Let’s just say that she’s got a pile of doozies that shall remain locked in the secret family photo album forever. I hope.

Cool Cover

week in pictures

When I was freelancing this week, I discovered this super awesome cover on one of the agency’s shelves and had to share. So good!

Enjoy your weekend (and stay out of trouble!)

It’s about time. Often, I buy beverages solely based on their packaging. Surely I’m not alone in this?

Weekend Stop at Stumptown.

week in pictures

I know that everyone likes Stumptown coffee, but I think their hot chocolate is the best.

Spotted: Gremlin!

week in pictures

I have a total soft spot for Gremlins – they’re little, awkward and the gas tank in the back cracks me up. There’s this middle-aged hispanic woman in my neighborhood that burns out of the Plaid Pantry parking lot sometimes in the most amazing Gremlin of all-time: sparkly green paint job, monsterous racing slick tires and massive flames painted along the sides. I totally wish she’d take me for a spin sometime.

Project status: Complete.

week in pictures

I spent pretty much every waking hour this week working on a book for Downtown Portland with the North team, complete with custom embossed covers – I’m super happy with how it turned out.

Cutest sign ever.

week in pictures

I am in love with the logo for Breken Kitchen, a cafe in N.W. The walls inside are perfectly matched to that same green – I love it when businesses go the extra mile with those little details.

You can’t be serious.

week in pictures

When I was sitting at Stumptown this weekend, this bike rider’s getup totally caught my eye. Skin tight? Check? Hearts? Check. Outfit matches your wife’s? Check. Golden.

ART

Hand-painted advertising.

week in pictures

Someone’s a barfly.

When we go to the coffee shop in the morning and walk Rocky, we always pass a trashy restaurant / bar on the corner. The side door is usually open and Rocky for some reason loves to try and wander in. I don’t blame him – the dart boards, collection of 3 foot tall trophies and Ozzy blaring are all pretty hard to resist. Nice sign, too:
