Sneak Peek: The Blogcademy Magazine

Blogcademy Magazine

We wanted to give the attendees of the upcoming Blogcademy workshop a memento that contained jump-starts to making their weekend a success: an exclusive print magazine. Kat, Gala and I each wrote articles pertaining to the topics we will be covering and also developed four activities inside. Additionally, we included the class schedule, room for notes, our contact information and a personal letter welcoming attendees to the course. Beyond that, we compiled a list of our favorite books and quotes.

Blogcademy Magazine

This first edition is 36 pages of content we believe in and we hope it will serve as a reminder to our Blogcademy class that this is just the beginning of their blogging journeys. The print copies will be arriving this week and we couldn’t be more excited!

What I Wore: The Parker Palm Springs

The Parker Palm Springs

The Parker Palm Springs can be described as nothing short of a midcentury modern paradise. Revamped in 2004 by Jonathan Adler, this hotel shows off his trademark brand of kitsch, managing to mix oversized, mod patterns with drug references and brightly colored knick-knacks into a truly trippy experience.

The Parker Palm Springs

The Parker is very inviting to non-hotel guests. Though Star and I did not stay there (we were rooming down the road at The Ace), the service was exemplary. The must-visit restaurant on your Palm Springs to-do list should be Norma’s (click the link and watch the video!) I have never seen bigger portions of food in my entire life. Our friends ordered the french toast and the slices were so thick it resembled more of a cake! The descriptions were highly entertaining as well. The Parker seems to employ only the best — the copywriting, the decor, landscaping, the service and the food were all immaculate.

I Wore:
Wrap Dress, Forever 21
Silver Bauble Necklace, H&M
Bracelets, Forever 21
Wedges, Minimarket

The Parker Palm Springs

After taking in the hotel lobby, where a large sign simply reading D R U G S takes center stage, we ventured outside into what can only be described as a tropical paradise. Mind you, it’s 100+ degrees but the greenery and palms are perfectly groomed and there’s even a hammock for lounging! The Parker let us take as many photos as we wanted and wander the grounds freely (which often isn’t always the case at many hotels for non-guests).

The Parker Palm Springs

Star OWNED that couch in her Bestsey Johnson dress! Within minutes of entering the Parker, we both wanted to move in immediately.

The Parker Palm Springs

This was hands-down the most photogenic hotel I’ve ever set foot in — I probably could have photographed it all day. It’s pretty unbelievable. If you have a trip to Palm Springs planned, make the Parker the must-see on your list. Most of our Design Life group ventured over at some point; it’s perhaps a five minute cab ride from The Ace and an experience you must see for yourself.

The Parker Palm Springs

Insider tip: Even if Mister Parker’s isn’t open, peek your head inside. It’s like a darkly glamorous opium den complete with a white baby grand piano and illicit art featuring retro pinups and a large neon pink painting that simply reads LSD.

A special thank you to the Parker Palm Springs for being so welcoming!

The Week In Pictures: 11.5.12 | Palm Springs

The Week in Pictures

My first time in Palm Springs was pretty surreal. It’s taken me a few days of being home and readjusting to really grasp the magnitude of it all. Last Thursday, I flew into San Francisco and met up with my friend Star, who would be joining me on a little adventure known as Design Life.

The Week in Pictures

A design retreat organized by Promise Tangeman and Alyssa Yuhas, Design Life was meant to bring a group of female graphic designers (many of which are also bloggers) together to network, learn from one another and chat about our processes openly. Needless to say, I learned a ton (there were so many lightbulb moments…these girls had some brilliant insights) and wow. I can’t wait for next year.

The Week in Pictures

I’ve never had the opportunity to come face-to-face with so many of my design peers all at once and truthfully, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Star and I arrived at The Ace Palm Springs on Thursday and though we have an Ace here in Portland, the atmosphere at this location was very, very different.

The Week in Pictures

A revamped 60s / 70s motel, this Ace had a highly entertaining hipster camping vibe — the narrow corridors, curtains made of tarps, southwestern-style woven rugs, denim headboards, folding chairs and card table (if you’re the gambling type, cards are available in the vending machine!) and blazing orange doors made us feel slightly like we were on the run from the law, hiding out in a retro desert oasis. I loved it! Even better, the Ace staff had left our radio on, tuned to disco funk. Perfect! We spent the next three days dancing off to the BeeGees, Barry White and Michael Jackson (which often made us late to group breakfasts and dinners).

The Ace: The Highlights

• The Vintage Metal Sign. It was the perfect photo-op and oozed major charm. I think we all posed in front of it at least once.

The Week in Pictures

• The Typography. This was a design retreat, after all. The extra special touches throughout the Ace didn’t go unnoticed. Dense hand-styled type covered signs, room cards and more.

The Week in Pictures

• The Photo Booth. Any photo booth that accepts debit cards is a serious threat to my well-being (and checking account). I got a wee bit carried away and swiped my card an upwards of 15 times during our stay. Snaps before breakfast? Snaps before the pool? Snaps at 2 a.m. after a few drinks? Every moment seemed worthy of commemorating.

• The Swim Club. The pool area is totally off the hook. Sadly, I barely squeezed in pool time (which sucked considering it was pushing 100 degrees every day). Between heading to town to check out sights, our daily scheduled chats and nightly dinners, I got in 15 minutes here, a half hour there. On Sunday, Emma gathered us all poolside for Instax snaps which turned out rad.

The Week in Pictures

• The Food and Drinks. I LOVED The King’s Highway, which is actually a renovated Denny’s! They also served my hometown favorite, Stumptown Coffee.

• The Snack Selection. It’s definitely high on entertainment value. I was kind of amazed: tons of booze, jerky, caramel corn, fruit stripe gum, coconut water…you get the idea. Quite eclectic!

• The Toiletries. They don’t skimp here: all your basics are jumbo-sized.

The Week in Pictures

Around The Ace

I loved the rock walls and random knick-knacks strewn about The Ace. It was nice to be in a hotel that didn’t feel too polished. Around every corner was a photo-op waiting to happen.

The Week in Pictures

Isn’t the waiting area of The King’s Highway cute? Star strikes a pose.

The Week in Pictures

Never. Enough. That poor, poor photo booth!

Attire

If you’ve never been to Palm Springs, it’s a full-on desert climate similar to Phoenix — each of the four days I was there, the temperature was near 100 degrees. Most of the time, I wore loose, sleeveless dresses during the day and packed along a light sweater for the night. The heat makes it nearly unbearable to walk long distances so make sure you have plenty of cab fare tucked away.

The Group

The Week in Pictures

I snapped this photo of our little group between sessions. You see that dude in the back row in the suit? He was getting married that day. I’m the only one not pictured because someone had to take the photo!

As designers, we all have our own styles and our own processes when it comes to working with clients. And we all have something to share. The talks were super enlightening and I learned so much from just being in the same room as my peers. Beyond that, I made a lot of new friends. I’d been following some of these girls for months and in a few cases, YEARS so coming face-to-face with them in a lot of cases was pretty surreal. Sitting next to them at dinner: surreal. Cramming into the photo booth with them: surreal. But in the best possible way.

Beyond The Ace

We didn’t have a ton of free time to explore Palm Springs but two additional highlights of the trip were visiting The Saguaro and The Parker (I went a little camera crazy at The Parker and have a full recap coming Monday). These two hotels have completely opposite vibes — while the Saguaro is a sleek, rainbow-infused masterpiece, The Parker is like a mid-century modern dreamscape on steroids. Patterned furniture, colored vases, art featuring drug references and beautiful women, oversized meals you could only dream of, perfectly manicured gardens complete with massive palms and hammocks…it all sounds too good to be true! If you’re new to Palm Springs, make The Parker your number one stop.

The Goodbyes

The Week in Pictures

This photo was taken with Bri, Emma, Star, Chelsea and Kate right before we all parted ways. I loved the whole Design Life group. Such smart, amazing, inspiring women. Thanks to everyone for being so welcoming and teaching me so much in such a short amount of time. I’m humbled. Design Life 2013 can’t get here soon enough.

Lolita Poster Remake

• I love this super affordable draft printing method to enlarge classic family photos!

• Some of the best life advice I’ve heard this week: Let it go. It’s difficult but wouldn’t we all feel a whole lot better about ourselves?

• Although I personally prefer to use a rate sheet, I liked Bri’s insight on why she bypasses this method for custom quotes.

• Some simple advice we took away from the Design Life retreat this weekend: Be amazing at a few things instead of just okay at a lot of things.

• 10 words every successful blogger needs to know.

• If you thrive on instant gratification and getting immediate feedback on your projects, how to you deal with those times you’re doing so-called invisible work?

• I definitely feel the negative effects of social media at times. If you’re constantly comparing yourself to others, you’re denying yourself the ability to fully experience joy.

• The NY Times wonders aloud if fashion trends are passé.

• This is what the stock of thank you bags from around the world looks like.

• I recently stumbled upon Geometry Daily and it’s a really great way to re-imagine the most basic shapes around us.

P.S. After a much needed few days of rest, it feels great to be back. Really looking forward to sharing some Palm Springs outtakes with you all tomorrow!

What I Wore: 10.1.12 // Hello, Fall

What I Wore Fall

Fall is definitely in there air here in Portland and this is my go-to look to start off the season. I was looking for a sweater I could throw over my basics (often a black dress and opaque tights this time of year) and this cardigan by Staring At Stars has turned out to be a great transition into this time where it’s too warm for a heavy coat but too cool for bare arms.

What I Wore Fall

I Wore:

Staring At Stars ‘Array’ Cardigan (these are the available colors — my black & white version is sold out), Urban Outfitters
Vintage Silk Shift Dress, Buffalo Exchange
Tights, H&M
Belt, Forever 21
All Bracelets, Forever 21
Wedges, Dries Van Noten
Bag, Versus
Nail Polish, Pop

What I Wore Fall

I’ve had these Dries van Noten wedges now for four years and I still love the silhouette — they were an early take on the sneaker wedge trend and I remember how outlandish people thought they were just a few years ago!

What I Wore Fall

In other news, I just returned from Palm Springs last night where it’s still pushing 100+ degrees and am just glad to be home after spending half of Sunday stuck in the airport after multiple delays (I sprinted though the SF airport last night and still barely made my flight. Eek!) I’m playing catch-up big time and also feeling under the weather after a very full weekend so it will be a bit slow around these parts for the next few days. I hope your week is off to a great start!

The Week in Pictures

Happy Friday from Palm Springs!

I woke up at the crack of dawn yesterday and flew to San Francisco to meet my dear friend Star for a little adventure. After downing some airport food, we boarded a tiny plane to Palm Springs and wow, is it hot. I’m loving all the palm trees and midcentury modern architecture though!

Why, exactly am I camped out at The Ace, deep in the desert? Early in the summer I received an email from Promise and Alyssa, inviting me to a design retreat. At first, I felt like I was going to jump out of my own skin, partially in excitement and partially in fear. There were a lot of female graphic designers I really admired on that list. I had to let the email sink in for a few days before even responding. Meeting around 25 new faces from across the country all at once felt a bit intimidating but also potentially life-changing. Pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zones is what makes us grow as people and as creatives. I was ready to embrace that.

The Week in Pictures

Star and I were a little late to our first group dinner last night because we were having a dance party to Rick James in the hotel room (truth!) We had to squeeze in at the very end of the table and ended up seated next to the lovely Kate, Bri, Emma, Bre and Erin Jane. And though I was meeting everyone face-to-face for the first time, all the girls were so welcoming, funny (oh, the stories that were told!) and I have a feeling that at the end of this weekend I’ll have made some new friends for life.

Lessons learned: Don’t second guess yourself. Seize every opportunity that you can. And, showing up is half the battle. I’ve been once again reminded that life can be a beautiful adventure if you’re willing to open up and embrace new experiences.

More from Palm Springs next week. Thanks for reading and have a great weekend, everyone!
