Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I hope your week was a good one. To be completely honest, I’m feeling a little low on energy and down — this week has been a tough one for a lot of people around me and I’m definitely feeling the after-effects. Also, the cooler Fall weather has just hit as well and it’s making me want to hibernate with a mug of hot apple cider and a good magazine.

In good news, the new Branch site launched yesterday and it’s such a relief to finally have it live after it simmered in the background for most of the Summer. Designers always seem to be the worst at updating their own portfolios and sites, myself included. It’s like the cobbler who has holes in his shoes! We know what it takes to get the job done but clients come first. I’m embarrassed that it took me two whole years to get the revamp in place but it feels so good to have a digital home I’m proud of. Star always comes through for me — she did the animation and development and nailed it!

Of course, as soon as one project gets crossed off, another is always waiting! Next up is this space. I’ve had the same theme since 2012 and while it’s held up well, I’ve been itching for change for a year now. I’m extra excited about this project because with the relaunch will come an online shop. I had one for years but it just became too dated. I have one-off art pieces, limited posters and t-shirts that have literally been in my closet for ages and it’s so important for me to offer unique, special items created from the heart in this space. After all, it was my first business and allowed me to grow as a designer and blogger with full-on creative freedom.

In other news, Chubs and I have been spending a lot of quality time together lately. Isn’t he handsome?! Being a squirrel, he LOVES acorns so much. The tricky part is that we can’t just roll up to the grocery store and buy him a bag since humans don’t really eat them. All Summer, we collected acorns on our morning walks and even talked the neighbor kids into collecting them for him. Still, there’s never enough. He’s even holding one in this photo!

I still love coming home to this room, my old office. It’s now full of art books, magazines and shoes. Basically, it’s what dreams are made of. 😉

These are a few of my favorite things at the moment: a tote bag I swiped from Gala (hey, it was too good to ignore!), strong black and white editorial layouts, piles of photo booth strips with friends, an amazing new book from my friend and client Ellen and a variety of succulents from Trader Joe’s. Also, the Steve Madden boots I’m wearing deserve a total shout-out. I bought them on a whim a year ago in New York and they are still going strong! I have so many fancy shoes but for daily office wear, these are super practical and tough.

Late nights of walking through Portland produce cool discoveries. I have no idea what this building is used for but the plants are ace.

And with that, I’m signing off. Time to pack for Palm Springs and of course, Designer Vaca! It’s that time of year again and I’m so excited to meet up with friends both old and new.

Have a great weekend! xoxo

After a few weeks away from home filled with a lot of fantasy and very little reality, I’m having a hard time readjusting. It’s always difficult to come down from the excitement and adventure but at the same time, I’m desperately craving a sense of routine.

Getting back into the swing of things hasn’t happened as quickly as I’d hoped. Late nights out at a dueling piano bar (the boardwalk at Disney World is where the real fun is!) and an epic goth party in New York were compounded by a cross-country flight full of sick people and man, I caught whatever they had. It was worth all the good times with friends old and new, though. There’s nothing funnier than waking up and turning on your camera only to discover oodles of dark, blurry photos of selfies with your #squad.

New York aways has the coolest street art popping up. I always expect things to be so different when I visit but in reality, so much is still the same. The same bars, coffee shops and clubs I frequented nearly 15 years ago are still standing and I’m still meeting up with friends from my early 20s. It’s a strange feeling of familiarity, another lifetime I exist in for a week at a time here and there.

The most epic day of my New York trip was last Sunday. Kat, Gala and I taught our final live The Blogcademy workshop and with no time for a nap, headed straight out to Necrocomicon, a goth-themed event at The Delancey. It was perfect timing since mine and Gala’s birthdays had happened just a few days earlier so we invited all our friends to come along in their best vampire finery.

I’d been begging Kat to join me for a goth night for YEARS and damn, she looked good. I hope she adopts this as her every day look!

Those all nighters at the club DO catch up with you once you’re in your 30s and this is the cure.

I love walking around New York with good company and no plans. The day usually fills up quickly anyway with photo booths, flower shops, new restaurants and browsing boutiques.

Traveling makes for a lot of great memories and I’ve been feeling tired of having them trapped inside my phone. I ordered a bunch of my favorite shots through the Artifact Uprising app (just upload and go!) and am so happy with the quality. This is the set I got.

In other news, I’ve been feeling like I’m in a weird transitional phase. Maybe it’s all the traveling and different parts of my life colliding at once but it’s definitely left me wanting to spend less time online and more time in real life.

Earlier this summer, all my luggage was lost in Italy and it never quite caught up with me in New York before I headed home. I was finally reunited with it this week and unpacking it was a total trip. All the random things I’d bought in Italy and Morocco came tumbling out, a bizarre mixture of treasures.

Once I’d gotten to the bottom of a suitcase packed so snugly it was a wonder anyone was able to even lift it, it was back to work on the new Branch site. With a new website comes an updated portfolio. I used to be great about staying on top of organizing and sharing finished work until running a studio became my full-time job. Now, it’s more important for me to stay on top of current client projects but then the weeks, months (and now a year!) has flown by with no updates. Portfolios are the same as everything else in your life — the longer you wait, the harder it is to dig yourself out. It’s been a good test, though — I’m working on a post of portfolio tips to help you get yours into shape, too. All the pain and suffering is worth it. 😉

In a nutshell, this week has been all about catching up. It feels good to hit the reset button. While the break from reality has been much needed, I’m excited to dig back into blogging here regularly next week.

Have an amazing weekend, friends. Sending much love your way!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: Disney World

Hello from New York! It’s been an intense yet amazing weekend as we taught our last live Blogcademy class and now, it’s time to get ready for a vampire party. The adventures never end!

I spent the week on vacation at Disney World posing with mascots, sipping glowing drinks, watching massive firework shows at Epcot, visiting one too many gift shops, wearing a whole lot of black and having a magical adventure hopping between parks. In between work, it’s essential to take a break and live it up!

I love this sign at the Disney World entrance. It sets the perfect mood.

The best part about Disney parks this time of year is the ample Halloween decorations. If you want to come back after hours to see the Halloween parade, hang out with Disney villains and special fireworks show, the extra pass is so, so worth it.

I’m always finding a way to sneak in some still life time. Check out that subtle Mickey!

I feel like a proud mom here. There aren’t any Disney squirrel characters so I bonded with Chip and Dale instead. I told them about Chubs and they were so enthusiastic. Haha.

Small World is such an awesome midcentury modern trip!

Hello from San Francisco!

I’m in town teaching with The Blogcademy this weekend and it’s been so much fun exploring the city in more depth. Based on a bunch of recommendations about what to do, Kat and I spent the day visiting loads of restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques and had an absolute blast.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Before flying out to San Francisco, I spent last weekend throwing an anniversary party with Joey for our family and friends. We kept it casual since it was hosted in our back yard and here’s what I wore.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

We spent the afternoon chatting beneath a disco ball and grabbing drinks from our (just finished) bar. Getting so many of the people I care about in one place was really special — of course, it had to be commemorated! There are a few missing…it always seems like someone is in the bathroom! Ha!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

After the party, it was back to a few long days of work before heading out of town for travel between San Francisco, Orlando and New York.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I love all the old signs in San Francisco. Even with all the change happening throughout the city right now, there’s still so many fantastic independent, small businesses to frequent.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

One of my favorite finds was Birch, a hybrid of a shop with both a florist and quirky
magazines. The black walls and colorful floral arrangements were such a cool contrast.

We also stopped by Heath Ceramics.

And, we came across this beautiful brand of chocolate.

Hi, I hope you had a great week! It’s been nothing short of intense over here between launching Rock n Roll Bride Magazine, getting ready for my 5th anniversary party tomorrow and gearing up to fly out to San Francisco for Blogcademy next week. Never a dull moment!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

This is one of my Summer haunts. I think it’s so, so important to support local businesses and spend a lot of time at the food carts in my neighborhood. There’s a back sun room with a bar (my pick is the cherry pomegranate cider!) and a box of Trivial Pursuit cards on every table. It’s the perfect place to put away your phone and chill out!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

My office totally has an urban tropical vibe going on. This fashion editorial was in the newest Marie Claire and I LOVE it so much. Oh, and if you’re on the search for palm on a budget, mine was $15.00 at IKEA and with a little TLC, it’s gotten so big.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

If I have a lunch meeting, Roman Candle is always my pick. I’ve raved about their pizza a million times but there are also great bakery treats, coffee (It’s owned by Stumptown), salads and sandwiches. It’s the first place I take friends who are visiting and every time, it’s a crowd pleaser.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

This is my favorite corner of the office. I wanted to mention the resources since this setup wasn’t the same in my original office tour earlier in the year. The yellow table is actually the Stockholm nightstand from IKEA, the chairs are the The Bend Ethel (but crazily enough, my brother found them at a swap meet in Southern California for just $40.00 a piece!), the bench is by Safavieh and the print is by Debbie Carlos.

September always feels like a time of transition and change to me. Does it for you, too? I always equated it to back-to-school when I was younger but it was also around this time that I originally launched Nubby Twiglet, Blogcademy and Branch. I can feel so many shifts happening and you know what? Change is AWESOME. Getting a little shake-up here and there keeps you on your A-game. The projects I’m working on right now feel very challenging and in a way, I love that. It forces you to grow and evolve. If you’re in the same boat right now, try to look at the positives. Good things don’t happen when you’re stuck in a rut. Going bigger is scary but it’s also necessary to make the things happen that you’re dreaming about. #peptak

And with that, I’m signing off — gotta get our house ready for the party tomorrow! Have a great weekend, friends!
