Hello from Vancouver! I arrived in Canada last night, went out to dinner with Kat and Gala at a very kitschy diner full of amazing hand painted signs and then promptly settled into bed. #partyanimal

With all this traveling lately, my time at home has been one big catch-up session. I do feel that no matter how full your days are, you need to find time for adventures. My personal motto is “work hard and play hard” and I try to flex it as often as possible!

I love hanging out with my dad because he’s spontaneous and up for anything. He’s always been that way, taking my brother and I on the road as teenagers when he called on accounts (he’s a salesman), taking us to our favorite outdoor festivals and rock concerts and even dropping me off at the goth club when my car broke down (wait, that was only six months ago).

On Saturday, he took me to the Schoolhouse sample sale and we walked out with piles of amazing light fixtures.

We finished up at the sale quite fast. But, knowing my dad, he had other plans in mind — it was too early to just go home. Instead, we went to the CityFair along the waterfront. I texted Gala “If you were here with me, we’d be trying out the Super Slide right now.”

Back to Schoolhouse — I love the old factory building they’re housed in, with its extra high ceilings. I’m always so inspired by their displays.

Once we were finished with Schoolhouse and the CityFair, we made our way through downtown Portland. Choosing to walk instead of drive, I felt like I was rediscovering my hometown. Vintage signs, storefronts, shops and this great tiled floor all called out to me. “Dad, you’re still in my photo!” Haha.

After some shopping and epic vegan treat tasting, we did some bar hopping. First, a stop at Paddy’s, then some gourmet popcorn obsessing at Clyde Common and finally, a stop at the real show-stopper of the evening, Jackknife.

If you’re visiting Portland, you MUST stop by this bar! It’s outfitted with black wallpapered walls accented with gold fans, a dark wood bar, a secret room that doubles as a photo booth (you can jump and dance in it!), massive oil paintings and velvet couches. SO GOOD.

They always say that the best inspiration hits when you leave your office and ain’t that the truth! Have a great weekend, everyone. I’ll be exploring and teaching in Vancouver. And, if you’d like to join us at The Blogcademy this weekend, there’s a few spots left! xo

This week I felt like a big weight had been lifted with the launch of Blogcademy Home School. It was a looooong time coming.

I began redesigning the site five months ago and a few days after I handed off the files to Kat’s husband (he was the developer on this project — there’s no way we could have pulled it off without him), I was on a plane to Palm Springs, gearing up to film three video segments for our lessons. Once that was done, I came home, faced with turning all our notes and exercise into worksheets. The days, nights and weekends felt impossibly long — when jobs stretch on, it sometimes feels like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. But, there always is.

I could barely sleep Monday night as the anticipation for the launch built. We’d been planning out our marketing and all the nitty gritty details on the road in San Francisco and Chicago in between Kat and Gala hustling and booking all the venues for the rest of the year, not to mention all of our individual plane tickets and places to stay across three continents. I am terrible at it so I just focus on the creative and let them handle the hellish administrative stuff. Luckily, they don’t mind! Haha.

It felt surreal to send out our first ever press release on Tuesday, like a very grown-up thing to do. We’ve launched tours and things like that in the past but there’s always such a learning curve. It’s good to get those mistakes out of the way early on. This time, the hiccups were so minor that I couldn’t believe it. I’ve said it a million times and I’ll say it again: it pays to surround yourself with good people that you can trust.

I feel like I just got home from Chicago but now I’m getting ready to head out to Canada on Thursday. I’m hanging onto my last few days around the house for awhile, enjoying my surroundings and time with Joey and Rocky. I always have this Avedon book sitting out in the living room. The eye on the cover is 3-D and winks at you!

While I’m toiling away, Rocky spends most of his time next to my desk catching up on his beauty sleep. It’s a tough life!

Have an awesome weekend, everyone! I’m hoping to hit the Schoolhouse sample sale in the morning, finish packing for Canada and wrap up my client’s book (which I am dyyyying to show you!) xoxo

As I was flying home from Chicago on Monday night, my stomach started doing somersaults. I was in the center seat (of course!) and I’d just made friends with the lady next to me so the last thing I wanted to do was throw up. Holding it together, I inched my way off the plane as quickly as possible the second it landed and within a few hours, felt back to normal but this whole week has felt a little topsy-turvy.

As soon as I got home, I found out that Joey had to head up to Seattle the next day to help a friend on a remodeling project. I’m hoping things chill out a bit after the weekend! But, maybe that’s asking a bit too much…as I was putting this post together earlier, I flipped on the TV in the middle of a press conference warning all of Portland to boil our water. Ahhhhh!

Over the weekend, I partied it up with the Chicago Blogcademy. A full recap is coming soon but man, the Midwesterners have some seriously good manners. It threw us off a bit at first — Kat, Gala and I are rebellious at heart and tend to draw in the same mix when it comes to our audience. We’d never had such a perfectly well-behaved class! A+ for this group all around. I want to go back and hug them all while confetti drizzles down. ;)

We do custom totes for each class and for Chicago, I was craving something a bit more simplistic this time.

Once the class was over, Kat, Gala and I headed out to our home away from home in Chicago (FRASCA, WE LOVE YOU!) and made some big plans. Over the last two years, I’ve realized over and over again that there’s only so much I can do on my own. But with these two ladies by my side? I feel like anything is possible. Sure, sometimes we disagree over which movie to watch, argue like siblings and can’t decide on where to eat dinner. But when it comes to the big stuff like business and relationships, we meet in the middle almost every time. And that makes me really grateful because having friends who you also get to work alongside and travel the world with? That is priceless.

On Tuesday morning, I dusted off my office and unpacked my bags after two weeks away and as I went over all the projects and commitments I had lined up, I felt overwhelmed. But then I reminded myself that all I can do is my best. Nothing’s ever going to be perfect. I just need to keep learning as I’m going.

And on that note, here’s a bloopers reel I just got ahold of from The Blogcademy. All I can say is…it got better from here. Haha. I’ve always loved a good blooper so here’s to a lot of laughs, imperfection and above all, having a good time. Have a great holiday weekend and I can’t wait to share our launch with you on Tuesday! xo

The Week In Pictures: 5.17.14 | Hello From San Francisco and Chicago!

Hello from Chicago! How was your week? After three solid months of being cooped up in my office in Portland, it’s been so nice to get back out on the road again, meet new blogcadettes, see new sights, try new restaurants and take pleasure in walking down unfamiliar streets. It’s true that the best inspiration hits when you leave your comfort zone and step away from your routine.

I spent last week in San Francisco and finally got to see the Golden Gate Bridge for the first time. My friend Kristin Cofer drove Kat, Gala and I up a winding road to a lookout point so we could take it in up close and personal. We braved the wind and inched out of our car as the doors blew shut behind us and our dresses and hair blew everywhere. But, it was totally worth it — just look at that view!

We also stopped by the beach which was also incredibly cold and super windy….but I can never say no to sand and waves and kites!

The one must-see spot on my list for San Francisco was Lombard Street, the crookedest street in the world. Eight incredibly sharp turns later, we were at the bottom, taking selfies.

Two things I picked up in San Franscico: Rodin lip balm and a Zara necklace.

We held our class at Makeshift Society, a co-working space in the heart of Hayes Valley. Our class was such an eclectic bunch and I’m still buzzing from the wonderful ladies I met. A full recap is coming next week!

While hanging out in Hayes Valley, we visited the Juice Shop truck. The best selection of juices, killer branding and a big green truck? Perfection.

On Monday, we packed our bags, headed for Chicago. It was my first time in the Windy City and it got off to a dramatic start. Right as we landed, a storm hit and we were stuck on the plane for an extra two hours as lightning struck all around.

The next day, we visited the famous Chicago Theatre sign. How amazing is that typography?!

And, no stop in Chicago is complete without snapping shots of your reflection at the Cloud Gate.

We’re staying in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago and loving the mix of independent shops and restaurants.

When we landed in Chicago, everyone was raving about the food and recommending tons of restaurants but the true gem by far has been Frasca. We’ve been here multiple times…all I have to say is garlic focaccia and skillet cookie. #heavenonaplate

I love all the old signs in our neighborhood including Dinkel’s Bakery.

I passed this house in our neighborhood and wanted to move in immediately. That mask! That red door!

When we were out and about, we stopped into the Anthropologie store and I fell in love with this painted firewood wall.

Fizz is in our neighborhood and I’m hoping to stop in before we leave on Monday.

And with that, I’m off to teach at Blogcademy Chicago. Enjoy your weekend!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Hello from San Francisco! This is my first time spending more than a few hours here and I LOVE it. I’ve been reunited with Kat and Gala and we’ve been living it up in the equivalent of a modern haunted mansion. The weather has been awesome and every restaurant we’ve tried so far has been spot-on.

Yesterday, I made a special trip to Réveile Coffee to see their magnificent tiling in person which resulted in a moment of urban camouflage. Haha.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Before I left for San Francisco, this was my go-to breakfast: Trader Joe’s multigrain waffles, blackberries and plain yogurt. Simple, quick and delicious!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I’ve been feeling super inspired in these surroundings and jotting down new ideas in my notebook.

My ideal building exterior: black and white, of course!

Great packaging!

I love this colorful gaggle of chairs at a café on Valencia Street.

A Sunday afternoon still-life. Helvetica Moleskines are still one of my favorite treasures.

La Palma had the best tacos I’ve ever eaten in my entire life. Their secret? Homemade tortillas.

Today is our last day off before teaching begins so we’re off to see some sights with fellow local (and kickass photographer) Kristin Cofer. Have a great weekend, everyone! xo

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

The week before I gear up for traveling with The Blogcademy always feels like that back to school rush — dusting off the backdrop, digging out the projector, printing off report cards, gathering up supplies, shipping off totes and workbooks…but in the best way possible. After our longest break ever (we’ve been working on some new offerings behind the scenes), I can’t wait to head off to San Francisco next week!

In an effort to not work through my free days in San Francisco, I’ve been delivering as many Branch client projects as possible and making sure everyone is taken care of. There have been so many cool projects going on that I can’t wait to share — everything from badges for a travel blog to brand guides for long-time clients to labeling for a skincare line. That mix definitely keeps things interesting and inspiring.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

With so much time spent at my desk lately, I try to make it at least feel pleasant to be at! It’s all about those little details.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Portland is too beautiful right now to stay indoors all the time! Every time I’m outside, I’m greeted with this kind of beauty.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Branch web developer Star was in town last week — we went over current clients, talked about how we could improve our forms and processes and…made more trips out to pizza and ice cream than I care to admit!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Our living room was so neglected for so long. It used to have dark gray walls and very little furniture but finally, after putting some effort into it, the room is coming together, piece by piece. It now feels comfortable and relaxing, just like a home should.

Have an inspiring, fun-filled weekend, everyone!

The Week In Pictures: 4.25.14

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

This week has been very full but very fun. My friend and fellow “branch” Star came to visit from San Francisco so we’ve been digging into client projects, business goals and sharing lots of creative assets (Star is a human treasure trove of useful information and resources).

When not working, I’ve been showing Star around to some of the new places that weren’t open in my hood the last time she visited like Salt & Straw and Roman Candle and then stopping into some of her favorite Portland haunts including Naked City.

We have a busy morning ahead plotting out new services for Branch but I wanted to check in and share some highlights from this week.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

About once a month, I get together with my friend, Girl Joey (have you checked out her daily photo project yet?!) to reminisce and talk shop at the Doug Fir. I love sitting out on the back patio, even when it’s raining and catch up while digging into some mac and cheese.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Oh, Star! I first met her on Live Journal in 2001 and the rest is history. At this point, we have a massive stack (this is just a sampling!) of photo booth strips commemorating our antics.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

The highlight of my last weekend was babysitting Rocky’s friend Raleigh. This little black beast snorts, snores and loves to cuddle. I’d adopt him in a second.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I never thought I’d be obsessed with a pair of scissors but every time I’m at Roman Candle and order pizza, it is served with a golden pair of shears to cut right through it. Genius, really. Works so much better!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I was going through my bookshelf and came across this Marilyn book I bought years ago at a library’s used book sale along the Oregon Coast. It’s tattered but beautiful.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

One of my favorite projects from this week was designing a media kit for Gala. You can see more of my in-progress work over on Dribbble. Okay, I’m off to be a good hostess and show Star a few more must-see Portland spots. Have a great weekend, everyone!
