Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

After spending three and a half weeks in various parts of California, I am now back home. Home in Portland, settling back into my office chair, juggling many, many projects and freezing my ass off. Ha! For my first week away, I was working in Palm Springs and then moved onto West Hollywood. Following that, all last week was spent in Venice (and I loved every second of it).

If you’re interested, all three places I stayed in on this trip were booked through Airbnb — I’m a fan of staying in places that have a little more charm and personality, not to mention cool locations that don’t feel too corporate. Plus, depending on the amount of people you have with you, going the Airbnb route can be substantially more affordable than a hotel. In Palm Springs, there was a larger group of us so we stayed here (the photo above was shot in front of this house!). Then, in West Hollywood, I stayed here. And finally, in Venice, I stayed here. I highly recommend all three — let me know if you have questions about any of them in the comments!

Though I’d been to Venice a number of times, it was always for a quick afternoon of exploring the shops lining Abbot Kinney or an entertaining stroll along the boardwalk but I never really got to stay long enough and let my surroundings sink in. This time, I had seven days to do that and really fell in love with the place. I’m not big on driving and I LOVE the beach so the small-ish neighborhood feel coupled with the beach being just a five minute walk away was my dream scenario.

I don’t know why I hadn’t been told sooner about the Venice Canals! What a hidden treasure! On my second to last day in Venice, Joey mentioned them offhandedly in a conversation — we immediately walked over the next morning and it was honestly one of the most beautiful spots I’d ever seen. There’s a wide mix of house styles, bridges and skinny little sidewalks lined with colorful boats surrounding the canals and it’s pure magic. I’ll be sharing more photos soon!

I had a lot of fun window shopping in Venice — I don’t recall the name of this store on Abbot Kinney but the displays were really unique.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

The oversized floral rug in our all-white Venice loft was ridiculously awesome.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I loved all the greenery cascading up the buildings in Venice.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

There are some majorly lush, overgrown sidewalks in the city. We walked down this one every single morning — I wish I had something similar in my neighborhood. So beautiful.

As soon as I got home, I laid out all my California treasures. Whenever I travel, I like to pick up business cards, postcards, treats and photo booth strips to remind me of that time. A few things included above: an empty macaron box from Bottega Louie, a business card from Chateau Marmont (no name needed), a hangtag from Kelly Wearstler, a postcard from the Ace and a photo strip from Le Labo (they have a free photo booth in the back of their store).

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Traveling and changing up my surroundings always reminds me to notice the little details and to find contentment in the everyday. A coffee from a new place, a small bunch of flowers, a photo strip with a friend, a cool business card, a piece of street art, or even just talking a detour from the way you normally walk can make all the difference. It’s good to be back home, unpacked and ready to get back to work but in the back of my mind, I’m still California dreamin.’

Have a beautiful, energizing and inspiring weekend, everyone.

I’ve been on a working vacation in LA for the last two weeks, taking in as much of the sights and sounds as I can. While I’ve visited LA many times in the past, my stays were never for very long and I barely ever made it outside of Hollywood. This has been a nice change of pace.

Joey, Rocky and I spent last week in West Hollywood but this week, we’ve been taking it easy in Venice. I really love it on this side of town — I keep mentioning to Joey that it reminds me a lot of S.E. Portland, just with a whole lot more palm trees…well, that and a beach close by!

We’ve been staying in a place that normally belongs to an architect and to say that I’ve fallen in love with it is the understatement of the century. It’s what I dream of for an office space for Branch and it’s given me a lot of ideas of what to look for when the time is right.

Nubby Twiglet | Week In Pictures: LA

Intelligentsia isn’t too far away and I have long been an admirer of their branding.

Nubby Twiglet | Week In Pictures: LA

For me, one of the coolest parts about being in Southern California is taking in all the different trees, plants and flowers — it’s such a departure from what we have in Portland (where we barely have palm trees — though Joey’s attempted to plant two in our back yard!)

Nubby Twiglet | Week In Pictures: LA

Calling this place home for the week has me feeling really inspired to step it up with our house. We have a long ways to go…but seeing how other people put their spaces together makes me realize that it’s those bold, simple touches that make a big difference.

Nubby Twiglet | Week In Pictures: LA

Big hats forever. Need I say more? I scored this at H&M right before I left for my trip and it’s served me well.

This is where I’ve been spending my days working. That table has my heart.

I absolutely love the acrylic sign for All Things Fabulous.

My LA dinner spot of choice has been Lemonade. Served cafeteria-style with plenty of healthy options (and of course, amazing lemonade — blood orange has been my top pick so far), I’ve been there with a few different friends…and hope to make it in for one last fix before it’s time to leave.

More (future) office inspiration: this rug.

We’ve been taking long walks all around Venice every chance we get — I’m feeling a bit spoiled this week with having the beach so close.

Have a great weekend, friends. I’m trying my best to soak up the last few days before re-entering reality…

This has been an epically weird week with plenty of twists and turns…but that’s just the way I like it. Never a dull moment in sight! My trip to Palm Springs was for work but Kat, Gala and I were determined to knock that all out as fast as possible so we could unwind and explore the city beyond the confines of our mid-century modern compound.

2014_wip_feb14_3

Working from sunrise to sundown every day, we wrapped up our project two full days early, just as the weekend hit.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

We used the break to venture across the city, stopping into book shops, galleries and boutiques stuffed to the brim with amazing, colorful mod furniture. It was toasty enough to go coatless and bare-legged, a marked difference from Portland, where a massive snowstorm had hit! I wore this neon coral dress every chance I got.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

There’s art everywhere in Palm Springs. I love it.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Back at our pad, we goofed off and did some just for fun photoshoots with Richard from FX Media.

2014_wip_feb14_14

Kat found these Wonka-esque shades for less than 20 bucks at a local boutique!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I celebrated my day off with a very dramatic look, complete with a Crown and Glory flower crown. This is the dress I wore.

2014_wip_feb14_22

As daylight quickly faded, I knew we had to finally put our turquoise fire pit to use. I talked our group into engaging in the ultimate All-American night-time activity: making s’mores. Gala, Kat and Richard had never done it so I gleefully explained all the steps. With no paper plates in sight, we carefully stacked our finished s’mores on a silver platter.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

As our stay in Palm Springs wound down, Joey and Rocky came by for a visit. As we walked Rocky around the neighborhood, I was completely bowled over by its beauty. A lot of people envision Palm Springs as one big, never-ending desert but this view tells a different story.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

After Palm Springs, I headed off to LA with Gala. On our way, we pulled off the freeway to see the Cabazon Dinosaurs. A perfect Monday afternoon activity. ;)

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

As we settled into West Hollywood for the night, Gala and I took a long walk across the city, peering into gallery and boutique windows. I was totally enamored by this portrait of Liz, complete with glittery hair.

Hello from gorgeous Palm Springs! I’ve been in town since Monday for work but I’ve been determined to squeeze some fun in whenever possible. That affirmation has been made all the easier ever since we met Steve, a cab driver and lifelong resident who has taken us on a few special jaunts. So far, we’ve gotten to see a yard full of alien and robot sculptures, Frank Sinatra’s old pad and the famous Marilyn statue.

2014_wip2614_11

Whenever I’m in Palm Springs, it’s a great excuse to pull out all of my brightly colored clothing. I’ve been finally getting the chance to wear this Nasty Gal top. The large brimmed hat was found at H&M.

2014_wip2614_5

For our stay, we rented a mid-century modern dream home. Being surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, a pool in the back yard and even having our own lemon tree has been quite surreal.

2014_wip2614_3

There’s also a bar. But, work comes first so we haven’t gotten a chance to put it to use yet!

2014_wip2614_16

Kat, Gala and I have been rocking these insanely awesome Cutie Dynamite sunglasses every chance we get. Can you blame us?!

2014_wip2614_2

There’s been a flurry of action at the house including a photo shoot with Made U Look. I love this look that Kat was wearing earlier in the week.

2014_wip2614_12

One of my favorite activities in Palm Springs so far has been riding bikes through town.

My idea of heaven: pulling inspiration and creating real life mood boards. Also, I’m loving this fluorescent coral dress from ASOS.

Workin’ it on a balcony at The Saguaro in an ASOS flower dress.

The most attention-grabbing yard I’ve ever seen: this artist has filled every possible space with dozens of brightly-colored sculptures.

2014_wip2614_7

Thanks for tuning in! Every time I visit Palm Springs, I fall a little more in love. Is there anything else that’s an absolute must-see before I hit the road in a few days?

Have an amazing weekend. I can’t wait to share more with you!

Sometimes I feel like I’m just floating through days because they’re so irregular. 2014 so far has been one strange trip. For someone who thrives on structure, I’m learning that it’s okay to just let go — good things don’t always happen inside the confines of structure.

This week especially, I had many of those, “Who am I, what am I doing and is this my life?” moments.

First, a call came in from my all-time favorite fashion magazine. I managed to not completely fangirl out…but just barely. Because I’ve read every single issue for the last 15 years.

With Branch, I delivered our first really big pitch for a dream client (thanks to a whole lot of coaching and talks off the ledge). I was reminded that you should always surround yourself with people who are much, much smarter and more experienced than you. Let them shine and do their thing. Learn from the best instead of feeling threatened.

Then, back-to-back client calls happened. Not just 10 minute check-ins but more like 2 hour reviews of 170 page photography books. Remember? I’m not a phone person. Well, so many calls had happened by Tuesday that I was pretty much over that fear.

A last-minute meeting with my accountant followed. I rushed into his office in head-to-toe black, clutching a binder full of paperwork. Our conversation started out with, “A lot has happened since I saw you last year.” Lots of laughs followed. And then, lots of highly entertaining stories involving scary audits. More laughs.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

My no-fail lunch spot lately has been Por Que No and on these winter days, nothing is better than a mug of piping hot spiced apple cider. For drinks, I’ve been enjoying Sweet Hereafter. Rustic wood walls, red cross emblazoned ceiling panels and a killer menu of vegan delights. What’s not to love?!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I’m heading out to Palm Springs soon for some Blogcademy projects and my head-to-toe black layers just won’t cut it in the desert. Luckily, all the cute summery stuff is on sale on Asos so I picked up some new looks for a total steal. And…Rocky can’t handle having the focus taken off of him for even 10 seconds.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Over the weekend, I stopped into Schoolhouse to pick up a light for my brother’s bathroom (we’re on the home stretch of remodeling — though Joey is hating applying the black grout!) and their displays are always so spot-on.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

This was a great mail week. A copy of the Designer Vaca book showed up from Artifact Uprising and I am so impressed with the quality of their products. The paper is totally matte and so beautiful — I’m definitely inspired to do a portfolio project or even some media kits with their books now.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Okay, it’s time to finish packing! Have a wonderful weekend, everyone. xoxo

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

This has been one of those weeks where I feel like the universe is trying to shake me up and finally force me to become a responsible adult and I’m just holding on as tightly as I can. Cue bid proposals, meetings with lawyers, opening up new accounts at the bank, lots of conversations over the phone (I’m usually more of an email person) and reaching out and asking for help when I realize I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. No matter how full my days get though, the bright spot is always an early morning serving of granola, plain greek yogurt and a generous helping of blackberries on top. Oh, and some good reading material!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

If you’re ever in Portland and looking to make some new friends, the best place to go is the fire pit at the Doug Fir. Every time I end up there, I find myself in the middle of the most fascinating conversations. It’s the perfect refuge in the middle of the city.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

My escape ever since I was a teenager has been flipping through fashion magazines. Lots of them. They give me a chance to absorb colors, textures and trends without the confines of a design project looming. These tears are all from the current issues of Bazaar and Marie Claire.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

This photo isn’t the greatest but considering where we started with our very disgusting old bathroom, just the sight of floor-to-ceiling subway tile feels completely unreal! Joey’s been working like a maniac to get it all done and should be applying black grout by the end of the weekend. I’m lucky I married a jack of all trades. ;)

Have a great weekend, everyone. I’m trying to brush off the “I don’t know what I’m doing! HELP!” feelings when it comes to a few things on my plate and just accepting that the only way to learn is to jump in feet first.

P.S. Thanks for your sweet, thoughtful comments on the self-initiated project post. Totally made my day. Lots of love to you all!

How’s your week been? I’ve been spending too much time inside so I’m heading out shortly to meet my old art director for tacos and margaritas. Sounds like the ideal Friday afternoon activity in my book!

Since my office is where I spend the majority of my life when I’m not traveling for The Blogcademy, I’m pretty picky about the way it looks and functions. Here’s a photo I took yesterday — from this angle, everything looks about the same as it has been for the last two years.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Here’s a shift to the left. Since 2002, I’d had a red round Magnavox TV on my desk that I was pretty attached to. Here’s what my set-up looked like with it. Once the digital conversion happened, I had to have a converter box stacked behind it. I actually didn’t mind because I rarely watch TV…except for Dr. Phil at 3 pm on weekdays (yes, I’m serious). But, it did take up the whole left side of my desk and that was annoying. At the end of the year, I cashed in an Amazon certificate and finally stepped up to this TV by Sceptre. It’s white so it blends in a bit better, isn’t too large to be hugely distracting and best of all, I now have so much more room to work.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Here’s a close-up. I wish I could ditch the black cord but we don’t have cable so I have a set of rabbit ears sitting on the floor behind my desk.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

It’s been a great start to the year over at Branch with some of our favorite clients popping up with new projects — this is a sneak peek of a 32 page print piece we’ve been working on for Luke Copping. He always comes up with the most unique ideas and I’ve been particularly obsessed with this one. Will show more soon!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Our demolished bathroom is looking much more inhabitable these days and we’re finally getting to the fun stuff. Yesterday, Joey and I ventured out to pick out tile — the floor will be oversized hexagons while the walls will be floor-to-ceiling subway tile. Everything will be white with black grout.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

On Friday, I had two sets of plans when my car decided to break down. My poor dad had to pick me up off the side of the road and drive me to a goth show and needless to say, I felt like I was 15 again. Haha. I went out to Analog to see my friend Voltaire play and every time I catch one of his shows, I feel like it’s a stand-up comedy routine perfectly suited for goths. I’ve never seen goth folks laugh so hard in my life! I forgot to take any photos until 1 am as I inhaled a plate of fries in the bar and looked up at the TV. There he is in all his pirate-goth regalia!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Late last week, I finished a mini media kit for Molly Crabapple. My favorite page is filled with notable quotes…of which she has many. Okay, time to duck out for those previously mentioned tacos and margaritas. Have a great weekend, everyone!
