Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

How was your week? I had another one of those weeks that felt like a month wrapped into one — between a drag queen brunch (more on that in a minute!) new client meetings, adventures across town and a few really late nights, I’m feeling very happy but also, very worn out. I’m writing this post from the comfort of my new green couch with a cup of tea complete with a dash of honey nearby (I’m normally a coffee drinker) under the guise that it’s a lot more comfortable working from here today than an office chair. I know we can all agree on that one!

Yesterday, I came home to find a surprise package waiting on my doorstep. “I haven’t been doing any shopping” was my first thought. Haha. I sliced it open to find cartons of homemade squirrel-shaped cookies from my pastry chef client (in Nebraska!), Goldenrod Pastries. Wow. Needless to say, I immediately ran them over to my office, afraid that Chubs would eat them all!

Onto the drag queen brunch. That’s a real thing here in Portland. My grandma and I took my cousin Matt to this amazing event for his birthday on Sunday at the Kennedy School. Basically, a drag queen troupe called Hot Chocolate is led up by the FIERCE Poison Waters and alongside their performances, you eat breakfast and hit the bar. It was basically the best Sunday ever. This is what I looked like before heading out the door — and to be clear, my skin doesn’t look that smooth in real life. Good lighting and Makeup Forever HD foundation get the credit!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I didn’t snap many photos of the event because I was having way too much fun watching the drag queens rock out to Whitney Houston. But getting to spend the morning with my grandma was so much fun. She LOVED it. She was sipping a screwdriver, clapping along to every song. I hope I’m that full of zest and energy at 85! This is my most favorite photo of her, taken at the end of the 1960s. She raised FIVE boys and still looked that good.

After an epic Sunday, I hit the town again on Monday and quickly discovered that Clyde Common has the best lavender lemonade around. They were so good in fact that my table ordered five of them!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Whenever I’m downtown, I have to stop into Alder & Co.. This display of flowers is always a different mix and so beautiful.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

On my way home, I spotted this coffee shop. It’s in the corner of a church and all the proceeds go towards keeping the very old (and very cool) building maintained. I know where my summer outside office is going to be!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

One of my favorite clients to work with is Luke Copping — he’s always full of great ideas. Next week, I’ll be sharing the outcome of our latest collaboration which includes these cards printed with inspirational sayings.

My year has been so full of goodness so far. I’ve been getting out of my office more and hanging out all over Portland while catching up with old friends, a lot of family and new clients. This week, I was looking for an old notebook and stumbled upon my stash of 30 or so journals dating back 15 years. Most are full of to-do lists but there are also thoughts and dreams. There are a lot of mentions of knowing what I wanted…but not quite knowing how to get it. I’m only now able to look back and see a very clear path and progression because as you know, when you’re going through life, there are days (and months) that leave can leave you feeling a little lost.

What I now realize is that nothing is perfectly laid out for any of us…and I’m glad. It’s about that exploration! The exploration is what allows you to try on different hats, mingle with different social groups and experiment. The more you experiment, the easier it will be to realize when you’ve found that perfect fit so my point is to get out and live life. There are so many discoveries waiting for you to find. This is getting a little long-winded and heavy for a Friday so I’ll leave you with this quote:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ― H. Jackson Brown Jr.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

I’m so happy it’s Friday (and I’m sure you feel the same exact way). Some weeks feel like a month rolled into one…and this was definitely one of those. My friend and Branch client Mary Bee came to town so we spent Sunday and Monday exploring Portland, snapping silly photos and eating so much ice cream, pizza and pastries that I literally felt sick. We’re kindred spirits so even though I only see her twice a year, we always pick right back up where we left off. Aren’t those the best kinds of friends?

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Did I mention that Mary Bee is the manager of Hidden Treasures? Why is that of importance? Well my friend, they source some of the most epic vintage in all of LA. This coat is a perfect example. Also of importance: the store has the original boat from Gilligan’s Island PROPPED UP ON THE ROOF. They take eccentricity to a whole new level and…I love them for it.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

When a friend is in town, the first order of business is to catch up on news over coffee. We spent the afternoon sitting on the green couches in the Ace Hotel lobby, chatting away.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

The next day, I showed Mary Bee around my neck of the woods in S.E. Portland. We strolled through cluttered antiques shops, tried on piles of questionable clothes and visited countless coffee shops and bars. It’s always so much fun to be a tourist in your own city.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Before she left town, Mary Bee surprised me with Roman Candle biscotti. Heaven in a bag. Really.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I’m thankful this week for the sun peeking out right as my friend arrived to town. I’m thankful for Salt & Straw ice cream. I’m thankful for Joey delivering lunch and dinner to my office during this crazy week of launching Blogcademy Online. I’m thankful for my mom who’s been ambitiously balancing both the Branch and Blogcademy books. And I’m thankful for Kat and Gala for hanging on during the highs and lows of the last 8 months as we planned, built and launched Blogcademy Online.

Launching a course of this size was no easy feat. Now that the launch has happened, I’m only now able to grasp what we pulled off. Having a course that’s completely digital means that everything has to run smoothly. It all has to make sense too, since you’re not there to explain it in person. And then there’s the task of showing what a digital course looks like….since it’s all digital. If you want to read more about what went on behind the scenes, check out this post.

If you’re in the middle of a big project yourself, hang in there. I know what it feels like to be in the thick of it, very far from the finish line. One thing that helped us tremendously was setting a firm launch date — a launch date that absolutely could not budge. The night before the launch, I was still making transcript edits and building promo graphics….because I knew there was no wiggle room. It was 100% worth it. Those projects are what add a richness to your life because there’s nothing better than being able to share your knowledge with others and teach them something that can potentially transform their lives. On that note, I love this quote:

“Your life should consist of more than commuting, working, eating, surfing the Internet, sleeping and watching TV. Your life should be filled with purpose-driven experiences and projects that bring excitement, passion, energy, and authentic meaning and joy into your life.” ― Richie Norton

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Hi, how was your week? Mine was a good lesson in patience. What I’d assumed was a one day long paint job for the upstairs of our house…morphed into four. Rocky and I headed out to the suburbs and sat on the couch by day watching crime dramas with my stepdad and cuddled up on an air mattress by night. We waited and waited…and finally, when we walked in, I couldn’t quite believe that I was in my own house. When you’re feeling impatient about something, remember that good things are always worth the wait.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: 1.23.15

I had some plans fall through mid-week and instead of fretting, Joey, Rocky and I took an afternoon coffee break and I ended up having a great time shooting these outfit photos. A total silver lining! I’m getting better about going with the flow and not throwing up my hands and giving into defeat when something doesn’t go as planned because I know there’s something potentially better waiting on the other side.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: 1.23.15

I have a ton of plants in my office….and they’re all from IKEA and Trader Joe’s! You can see the edge of a massive cluster of succulents here and they were just $7.00 from Trader Joe’s. If you have one in your area, they get some epic plants in on occasion.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: 1.23.15

Here’s a quick shot of my upstairs hallway. You’re probably thinking, “Okay, it’s just a hallway. What’s the big deal?” Well, when we moved in 5 years ago, most of our upstairs was painted a hideous shade of high gloss beige. Our bedroom, the bathroom, the hallway, the staircase banister…everything. We quickly painted out the rooms — our bathroom became white, our bedroom became black with white trim and my office became white with black trim. But, the hallway was an afterthought. It’s not like we spent any time hanging out in it so we put it off. Over the weekend, Joey painted over the beige madness with white and trimmed in all the accents with high gloss black. He’s still doing touch-ups (hence the painter’s tape on the knobs) but it’s such a huge difference already. I’m still in shock that a few coats of paint could make such a difference.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: 1.23.15

I’m signing off to finish up some projects before going out with my dad tonight but I wanted to leave you with this saying:

“You get what you focus on. So focus on what you want.”

It’s such a simple sentiment but I’ve been giving it a lot of thought lately. We all have the same amount of time in a day and the more time and energy we put towards what we actually want, the more likely it is to happen.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: 1.16.15

How was your week? Mine was…disheveled. I’m actually sitting at my mom’s house right now with Rocky while Joey tears my old office apart and repaints it (Rocky is allergic to paint fumes so we’re camped out for the weekend). I’m so excited to have a room to spend my nights and weekends in reading. And, let’s get real — watching Dr. Phil reruns. It’s going to be the perfect escape. I can’t wait!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: 1.16.15

During the week when I need a break from office life, I head out to coffee shops to meet friends and my personal favorite at the moment is Good Coffee. The staff is ridiculously friendly and I’m a big fan of the Scandinavian modern aesthetic inside. Great tile, cacti and coffee — a winning combination if you ask me!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: 1.16.15

This is pinned up next to my desk and a reminder to always keep moving forward.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: 1.16.15

As I was cleaning out my closet over the weekend, I found this notebook. It’s from around 2006 and was basically my Pinterest board of design ideas at the time. I miss the days of cut and paste and am itching to fill notebooks with ideas and collages again. How about you?

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: 1.16.15

To keep my office tidy, I just picked up a bunch of yellow storage boxes from IKEA. They hold everything from props to photos and supplies and best of all, fit right in with the decor.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: 1.16.15

This is a peek inside my soon-to-be hangout room. I can’t wait to come home to fresh paint and start pulling it together. Researching what I wanted to turn this room into, sourcing the items and exploring my personal style has been really energizing.

I keep asking myself what I want. My favorite color during my entire childhood was green so I just bought a green couch. I love a good coffee table book so I’ve pulled out my favorites and stacked them nice and high. I love flipping through fashion magazines so I’ve displayed my collection of 15 years’ worth in my bookshelf.

Surround yourself with things that inspire you. Even if you live at home or work in a cubicle or have five roommates (I’ve been in all those situations), you still have the opportunity to make your space a refection of you. Create a place that leaves you feeling inspired and ready to reach for whatever’s next.

“It’s important to determine which surroundings work best for you, and then build that environment to suit your needs.” —Marilu Henner

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Welcome to The Week In Pictures, a weekly column where I give you a glimpse inside my daily existence — where I’m hanging out, what I’m up to and what’s new. Thanks for joining me!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I just had the most beautiful golden light (and a really good vanilla latte and chocolate chip sea salt cookie) at Courier Coffee. It was the perfect mid-day escape during a break downtown. I recently featured Courier Coffee here if you want more info!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

The last few days were spent showing my client Ellen around Portland. We ate our way through a bunch of awesome downtown restaurants and had the best time chatting and exploring. There’s so much great stuff we’ve been working on over the last year that’s launching soon — and I’m also proud to call her a great friend.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I love the tangle of plants in the Ace Hotel lobby. It always makes me smile to walk in and see people sitting around on the big, comfy couches mid-day, reading the mix of newspapers. Simple, old school pleasures.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

My big behind-the-scenes project around our house lately has been transforming my old office into a fun hangout room. When I have projects I want to work on over the weekend, I don’t want to feel like I’m at “work” so I’ve switched out the desk for a comfy couch, coffee table and stacks of photography books. I can’t wait to give you the tour as soon as it’s finished. Getting close!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

If you don’t follow me on Instagram, you may have missed this Chubs update and it’s pretty cute. Joey was eating a salad awhile back and he jumped up and snatched the chunk of avocado off his plate. Avocado is his favorite new food!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Don’t you love it when you discover something new (to you) in your own city? I’d probably passed by the doors of Hotel Monaco a hundred times over the years…and finally stopped in this week. I had no idea that this gorgeous lobby was lurking inside! Wow!

On a more personal note, as much fun as I had this week, there were also a lot of long nights. This is the first time I’ve worked on a digital product launch…with a full launch plan included. Diving into this world for Blogcademy Online has been a real eye opener. Designing a brand new website and promo graphics are things I’ve done many times before but it’s all the things that you can’t really plan for that teach you the most.

A simple idea can snowball into an unexpectedly awesome outcome. Last weekend, we gathered up the transcriptions for our 18 videos to format them into a PDF document. 2 days later it had morphed into a 300 page book! There’s still a lot to do before the January 29th launch but I’m feeling really good about the quality of the content. I’ve been wanting to understand more about how this digital product world works since I have a lot of offerings that I want to launch this year for you guys. It feels good to be getting that big learning curve out of the way now (even if it’s painful at times) so when it’s time to share new things with you, the process will be smoother. On that note, I’ll leave you with this quote:

“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.”
― Theodore Roosevelt

See you next week!

The Week In Pictures: 12.19.14 | Happy Holidays!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Welcome to the very last Week in Pictures of the year!

Like many of you, I’m in a sprint to the finish line to wrap up lots of projects and obligations…and then take a major break. My holiday party is tomorrow night and I’m looking forward to catching up with family and friends and also sampling Joey’s famous boozy fruit punch. He changes the recipe slightly every year so it’s always bit of a surprise.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

We’ve put our tree and stockings up and in case you were wondering, Chubs has a stocking, too! So far, he’s just asked Santa for a big stash of nuts. ;)

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

This week, there were a lot of photos taken in my office…because I spent most of my time there. It’s all good, though because I’m wrapping up three branding projects and sites for super savvy, inspiring women (and hey, I met them all in San Francisco! Holla!) that launch on the 1st of 2015 and watching my clients step into new lives (literally quitting jobs, going out on their own, giving it everything they’ve got) is inspiring me big time. I still remember that same scared / excited / adrenaline-pumping feeling I had when I launched Branch a year and a half ago. It feels good to be in this spot on the other side now, cheering them on. I can’t wait to share all these new projects with you (and the women behind them!)

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I’m always flipping through my magazine subscriptions (these days, it’s W, Elle, Lucky, Bazaar and Marie Claire) and looking for fresh inspiration. Since I spend my days designing, I try to look in different sources like fashion and skate / surf magazines. Without fail, fashion magazines usually lead me down the rabbit hole of shoes and more shoes. Haha.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

My suitcase home from Australia was stuffed to the brim with packaging references like this beautiful bottle from Greene St. Juice which is doubling as a fabulous vase now.

2014_nubbytwiglet_wip_12192014_6

Rocky is all ready for Santa! Happy holidays and thanks for (virtually) hanging out with me this year. It’s been awesome getting to know so many of you both here and in person at The Blogcademy. Thank you for all of your comments, emails, tweets and being the best audience in the known universe. Sending lots of love your way!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

How was your week? I just got home from New Zealand on Monday and am still settling in. It’s so nice to be back, though. I missed Joey, I missed my pets, I missed my family and I missed my office. As great as it’s been getting the opportunity to travel and see the world this year, it’s always nice to come home. Home really is where the heart is.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

While I was in Australia and New Zealand, I picked up piles of mementos — there’s a stack of business cards, photos and other odds and ends in the corner of my office that I need to organize. One of my favorite finds was this series of Australian maps with illustrations on the covers.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Australia has the best chai lattes…pretty much everywhere. I probably sampled a dozen different ones and, well, I didn’t have a single bad one. This was from Cafe Vue in Melbourne.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

After a week and a half split between Sydney and Melbourne, I flew to Auckland last Friday. I was completely blown away by all the great branding in New Zealand.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I spent the weekend in Auckland teaching at The Blogcademy with Kat and Gala — this was snapped right outside of our venue by Steph, a photographer who I adore.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

After class, we went to Hell. Literally. All I can say is that the Purgatory Pizza is ridiculously good.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

After a solid night’s rest, it was time to make the journey back home in the Northern Hemisphere. Auckland to Sydney. Sydney to Los Angeles. And finally, Los Angeles to Portland. 20 hours of flights was brutal…but coming home to my boys made every second worth it.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I was definitely having withdrawals from all my old hometown haunts so my mom took me out to lunch at Roman Candle. Pizza and ginger beer for lunch…and homemade granola to go!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Being back home, I wasted no time putting our Christmas tree up. This is the first year we’ve had Chubs and every time I tried to hang up an ornament, he’d steal it from me. The only way to distract him was to give him a piece of bread. I told him to pick up his crumbs afterwards but he wouldn’t listen. ;)

Have a great weekend!
