Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

How was your week? Mine was…very full, hence the late post! I’m heading out to Europe soon and while there’s going to be some pleasure mixed in, it’s mostly a business trip packed with four Blogcademy dates, a mixer party, filming new projects with two sets of videographers and squeezing in a few photo shoots. First up, London. Then, Berlin, followed by Amsterdam and finally, New York. Whew!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

With all that time away, there’s a lot of prep that comes with keeping businesses running like delivering client work and pre-scheduling a lot of blog posts. I love it, though. In between sitting at my desk, I’ve been going out to lunch every week with my grandparents (they’re the BEST people on the planet) and visiting ancient dive bars with my dad — my family always whisks me away on awesome, unexpected adventures.

Oh, I should point out the “You’re awesome” postcard in that top photo. My friend Sian just sent me a care package of goodies and she has the best handwriting. I wish mine looked like that!

Packing, packing and more packing…trying to balance the fun with the practical. Always a challenge.

This year hasn’t been easy but it’s been the best on a personal level. I’ve grown a lot and learned to push fear aside — I’ve never been more content just doing my own thing, choosing who I work with, hanging out with my family and traveling in between it all. My life now is very unconventional compared to the way it was but it feels right. Let’s be real here — I do still get those moments where my stomach drops and I ask myself what the hell I’m doing but they’re much fewer and far between now. ;)

This isn’t the greatest photo but I had to share it! As I walked into the St. Paul Rodeo bar last weekend, I noticed that the taxidermy was covered in bras. Haha. Good times! Have an awesome weekend, everyone. I’m off to finish packing! xoxo

Happy 4th of July! It’s beautiful outside and I’m hoping to wrap up work early and spend the afternoon with family. Speaking of family, I took the afternoon off yesterday to meet my grandparents for lunch. Can you believe that they just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary?! They’re two of my favorite people on the planet and my grandma always used to wear this sweater. When I mentioned how much I liked it a few years back, she gave it to me. I love it, stains and all!

Over the weekend, Joey, Rocky and I headed up to the Rose Garden. Though I’ve been there many times, I’ve never seen it this time of year — there were blooming roses in every direction and it was so beautiful. If you’re visiting Portland soon, this is a must-see spot!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I just got a new dress for my upcoming Europe trip. I love super graphic clothes in classic shapes and feel like I’ll still be wearing this exact dress in 20 years. You can see a full length shot here.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I wanted to hang around the Rose Gardens all day…but Rocky was understandably grumpy after an hour. ;)

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Have a great 4th, everyone! Rest up, relax and I’ll see you back here on Monday.

I’ve been upholding my motto of “work hard and play hard” to the fullest extent. While I’m tackling some major client projects before I take off to Europe soon, I’ve been also having some fun adventures with Joey and Rocky by day and my cousin Matt by night. I love the feeling of falling into bed exhausted but happy.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Spending so much time in my office, I get restless and start rearranging things. Haha. I just set my ice cream cone bank out again — it reminds me to dump the change out of my purse on a regular basis!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Over the weekend, I tried Prasad out for the first time. Organic and vegan, their breakfast and juice menu was awesome and I can’t wait to go back.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

There’s never enough photos of Rocky on the blog. Time to remedy that!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

It’s summer wardrobe time which for me equals cotton tees and cut-out shoes. Both of these are from Zara, which is having a major sale right now. And that lotion? It’s one of my favorite new beauty products. I’m working on an upcoming post of my recent finds!

My afternoon reading spot: this area in our living room.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Have a great weekend, everyone! I’m off to pick out some plants for our new flower box Joey just built (more on that soon!) and then some client meetings — a nice, laid back end to the week.

Any fun plans you’re looking forward to?

It’s so good to be home! Waking up to a fresh cup of coffee made by Joey every morning, checking out the new food carts by my house, making weekend plans with my cousin Matt, catching up on episodes of Dr. Phil and chatting with clients back in my own zone are just a few of my favorite things. Oh, and let’s not forget about walking past the bathroom. It never gets old!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Thanks to my time spent in Canada I now l have a large chocolate coin, some pages from the Air Canada in-flight magazine, some very fancy sticky notes and some more Garance Doré notebooks (because I have a problem. Obviously). All these still lifes aren’t just for idle fun — I’ve been working out my ideas for a little course. More on that soon!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Canada, you know what’s up. Can I get a quick Amen?!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Calgary really surprised me. I’m not quite sure what I was expecting but places like Market were not on my radar. This restaurant was one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had, hands-down. The food, drinks, decor and dessert were to die for and they even had a mini herb garden growing in front of the kitchen! Half of the restaurant was black, half was white — and as soon as the walls and floor switched to black, so did the chairs and napkins!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Oh, and don’t even get me started on Analog Coffee. Between this yellow espresso machine and the Nutella cookies, I was in love.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

The true defining moment of my stay in Calgary, though were these sets of wax fangs we found at Freak Lunchbox. Did you have a pair as a kid, too? It had been a good 25 years since I slipped in a pair but it was just as fun as I’d hoped. For a split second, I proclaimed myself the unofficial Count Of Calgary. We laughed so hard we cried. And really, what better way is there to end a trip than with wax fangs in your mouth and tears of joy streaming down your face?!

Have a relaxing, beautiful weekend, everyone! And don’t forget to enter my giveaway for some chic new ballet flats! xo

The Week In Pictures: 6.13.14 | Hello From Canada!

Though Vancouver is just an hour flight from Portland, I’d never spent any time there until last week. It was definitely time to get acquainted with my northern neighbors.

Kat, Gala and I stayed on the edge of Gastown and when not teaching, spent our time grabbing dinner at Nuba with Danielle, admiring the bizarre yet awesome succulent / lighting setup at Tacofino Commissary (above), gorging ourselves on homemade waffles dipped in white chocolate pistachio rosewater sauce (yes, that’s a real thing) at Medina Cafe, manically playing the bongos, getting beautified at Sugarbox (I’m rocking my first-ever gel manicure!) and ending one fateful night covered in silver stars.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Getting out of my very Virgo-fied office and back out on the road where things are a little less polished and I’m constantly faced with the unexpected? It’s been the best of times.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

The ultimate highlight of our time in Vancouver was visiting the rainbow crosswalk. We spent the evening with Diane and Mike as we hopped, skipped and jumped across it. An audience of onlookers gathered, trying to give our poor photographers pointers. The best interaction though was when a guy rolled up on a bike behind us and yelled “BABES!” at the top of his lungs.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

After dozens of jumps, I retreated to the neighboring section of rainbow-hued picnic tables.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Exhausted, I took a rest on the surface of a lavender table and threatened to never move.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I loved having dinner at Pizzeria Ludica — I forgot how fun a game of Jenga can be (they have HUNDREDS of board games, too!) Kat was a fierce competitor, sliding out all the bottom pieces and leaving me with a leaning tower. It was fun until I lost and the pieces nearly landed in my pasta. Haha.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Our favorite dining experience though was definitely Medina Cafe. We knew it had to be good when we arrived mid-week and the wait for a table was a half hour. The breakfast and lavender lattes were out of this world. Everything tasted as good as it looked.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Yesterday, we packed our bags and flew into Calgary. Green rolling hills and friendly locals immediately won us over. After dinner at Una (the 4-magi was unbelievably good), we visited the coolest candy shop ever, Freak Lunchbox and went crazy, dropping 60 bucks on gummy vampire fangs, oversized chocolate Canadian gold coins and bags of chocolate. Oops.

This Canadian adventure has been so much fun and I’m a little sad to see it come to an end on Monday. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Hello from Vancouver! I arrived in Canada last night, went out to dinner with Kat and Gala at a very kitschy diner full of amazing hand painted signs and then promptly settled into bed. #partyanimal

With all this traveling lately, my time at home has been one big catch-up session. I do feel that no matter how full your days are, you need to find time for adventures. My personal motto is “work hard and play hard” and I try to flex it as often as possible!

I love hanging out with my dad because he’s spontaneous and up for anything. He’s always been that way, taking my brother and I on the road as teenagers when he called on accounts (he’s a salesman), taking us to our favorite outdoor festivals and rock concerts and even dropping me off at the goth club when my car broke down (wait, that was only six months ago).

On Saturday, he took me to the Schoolhouse sample sale and we walked out with piles of amazing light fixtures.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

We finished up at the sale quite fast. But, knowing my dad, he had other plans in mind — it was too early to just go home. Instead, we went to the CityFair along the waterfront. I texted Gala “If you were here with me, we’d be trying out the Super Slide right now.”

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Back to Schoolhouse — I love the old factory building they’re housed in, with its extra high ceilings. I’m always so inspired by their displays.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Once we were finished with Schoolhouse and the CityFair, we made our way through downtown Portland. Choosing to walk instead of drive, I felt like I was rediscovering my hometown. Vintage signs, storefronts, shops and this great tiled floor all called out to me. “Dad, you’re still in my photo!” Haha.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

After some shopping and epic vegan treat tasting, we did some bar hopping. First, a stop at Paddy’s, then some gourmet popcorn obsessing at Clyde Common and finally, a stop at the real show-stopper of the evening, Jackknife.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

If you’re visiting Portland, you MUST stop by this bar! It’s outfitted with black wallpapered walls accented with gold fans, a dark wood bar, a secret room that doubles as a photo booth (you can jump and dance in it!), massive oil paintings and velvet couches. SO GOOD.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

They always say that the best inspiration hits when you leave your office and ain’t that the truth! Have a great weekend, everyone. I’ll be exploring and teaching in Vancouver. And, if you’d like to join us at The Blogcademy this weekend, there’s a few spots left! xo

This week I felt like a big weight had been lifted with the launch of Blogcademy Home School. It was a looooong time coming.

I began redesigning the site five months ago and a few days after I handed off the files to Kat’s husband (he was the developer on this project — there’s no way we could have pulled it off without him), I was on a plane to Palm Springs, gearing up to film three video segments for our lessons. Once that was done, I came home, faced with turning all our notes and exercise into worksheets. The days, nights and weekends felt impossibly long — when jobs stretch on, it sometimes feels like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. But, there always is.

I could barely sleep Monday night as the anticipation for the launch built. We’d been planning out our marketing and all the nitty gritty details on the road in San Francisco and Chicago in between Kat and Gala hustling and booking all the venues for the rest of the year, not to mention all of our individual plane tickets and places to stay across three continents. I am terrible at it so I just focus on the creative and let them handle the hellish administrative stuff. Luckily, they don’t mind! Haha.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

It felt surreal to send out our first ever press release on Tuesday, like a very grown-up thing to do. We’ve launched tours and things like that in the past but there’s always such a learning curve. It’s good to get those mistakes out of the way early on. This time, the hiccups were so minor that I couldn’t believe it. I’ve said it a million times and I’ll say it again: it pays to surround yourself with good people that you can trust.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I feel like I just got home from Chicago but now I’m getting ready to head out to Canada on Thursday. I’m hanging onto my last few days around the house for awhile, enjoying my surroundings and time with Joey and Rocky. I always have this Avedon book sitting out in the living room. The eye on the cover is 3-D and winks at you!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

While I’m toiling away, Rocky spends most of his time next to my desk catching up on his beauty sleep. It’s a tough life!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Have an awesome weekend, everyone! I’m hoping to hit the Schoolhouse sample sale in the morning, finish packing for Canada and wrap up my client’s book (which I am dyyyying to show you!) xoxo
