Nubby Twiglet | The Week in Pictures

Hello! How was your week? The weather has been way too nice to stay inside my office all day so yesterday, I took the afternoon off to visit some of my favorite local haunts, Roman Candle and Salt & Straw. I’m also making plans to visit the upcoming Oktoberfest in Mt. Angel…and hoping I can pull it off since I head to New York, Palm Springs and D.C. a week later.

I’m always going on about how great Buffalo Exchange is. It’s my holy grail for finding “new” clothes on a budget. Since I usually have a trade balance there, it’s like shopping without the guilt. Yesterday, I found these Paige striped jeans for a fraction of the original price. Score!

I’ll never tire of taking selfies against the tiled walls in our bathroom — it took Joey three months to finish this space so I try to show it off as much as I can. And that’s the Sony NEX-5N camera I’m holding. I still use it every day (including every single photo in this post!) and LOVE it.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week in Pictures

Roman Candle is just five minutes from my house but I don’t go there nearly enough which is a shame because they have some of the best pizza in town. Whenever I have visitors staying with me, it’s the first place I take them and they all agree!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week in Pictures

As I was saying…this pizza rules. And the big gold scissors only add to the charm.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week in Pictures

I love spending Sundays flipping through fashion magazines, catching up on reading, gathering inspiration and figuring out the upcoming weeks’ blog posts. The week feels a lot less frantic when I have a game plan.

Your weekly Chubs update: he’s grown a ton again! No more baby squirrel here! He’s eating solid food now (you can’t tell but he’s clutching a nut there!) and whenever I take a nap, he lays in the window above me to sun himself. He also loves running around my office and startling me by sitting on top of my head. Haha.

It’s been hot, hot, hot…which is the perfect excuse to visit Salt & Straw. My current favorite flavor? almond brittle with salted ganache, a.k.a. ice cream heaven.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

How was your week? I’m just getting around to posting because I had the best possible detour today — brunch with Alexandra and Sarah. Our conversations seamlessly flipped from one subject to another and along the way, we covered wrestlers with eccentric costumes, budget Vegas shows (complete with neon body paint), the faded glamour of midwestern supper clubs and the art of dressing up for a J. Lo concert. I haven’t laughed as hard as I did today in ages. The whole time, I was reminded of how important friendships are — friendships where you can just be yourself, cut loose and have a great time without snapping a single photo or picking up your smart phone. I left feeling excited, refreshed and ready for the holiday weekend.

As soon as I got home today, I had Joey snap this photo in our back yard. It still has a long way to go but it’s the perfect spot to hang out in the middle of the day when my office leaves me feeling restless. My dress is by Dusen Dusen.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Organization to the extreme is my favorite pastime. I’m working on a post of my top office must-haves soon.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Chubby update: he’s grown a ton and now has a rope swing, platform and ladder in his squirrel house. Movin’ on up!
Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

This week, I paid a visit to the ultimate virgo mecca, The Container Store and picked up these great clear drawer organizer trays. Simple and effective.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by the Doug Fir and hang out with bigfoot on the back patio! It’s their 10th anniversary this year so he’s rocking a fancy new necklace.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I’ve always said that the best conversations in Portland happen late at night around the Doug Fir fire pit. Every time I’m there with my friend Joey, we end up meeting the most interesting mix of folks. Their bar menu is great, too. I always order the homemade mac and cheese and finish up the night with their seasonal fruit crisp. Yum!

I’m looking forward to taking it easy for the holiday weekend, catching up on boring stuff (like laundry) and doing plenty of barbecuing. Have fun!

Hello again! How was your week?

I’ll be honest…since I’ve been back, it’s been full-on catch up mode around here. Putting together timelines for new jobs, getting my accounting caught up, long coffee dates with friends, birthday parties (the big 6-0!), squirrel sitting and backyard barbecues (we finally got one and are using it nearly every day!) have left my days feeling really full. As I say, work hard and play hard! I feel like the first half of this year got off to a really slow start but things are finally picking up steam and I’m excited to release a bunch of new projects for both Branch and Blogcademy over the next few months.

I stopped into my absolute favorite place to shop, Buffalo Exchange yesterday and found this vintage orangey-red felt hat (above). The thing is, my office is a bit of a distaster at the moment so when I got home, I sat on the floor facing my windows, pulled a white curtain behind me to block out the messy background…and the curtains draped awkwardly, cutting off part of my hat! Haha! Didn’t quite go as planned but I ended up liking the negative space.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Chubby has been doing so well this week. He’s now drinking out of a bottle and has grown a ton. Joey also built him the equivalent of a squirrel mansion (seriously, his new “house” is massive) and he’s able to keep his balance much more easily while walking.

I’m always on the hunt for visual inspiration and like to stop into a variety of places. I love Pastaworks for this reason. It’s a European-style market with so much great packaging I’ve never seen before.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Coffee dates with Pam: always high energy! She’s one of those friends where we get so excited chatting about design and projects that we keep talking faster, faster, faster! Haha.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

One of my favorite houses near Hawthorne. Best paint job on the block!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

This is a peek at my desk right now. Black felt-tipped Stabilo pens are awesome — I use them to cross items off my to-do lists (I hand write them every day). I thrifted that mug 10 years ago, my new phone case was found at a shop in Berlin last month and the Rodin lip balm looks and works great.

Have a great weekend, everyone! I also wanted to say thank you to those of you who’ve picked up the new Home School modules. Seeing your still lifes pop up has been making my day! I especially love Angela’s photo! xo

It’s been an interesting week getting settled back into home life, to say the least. Last Thursday night, I flew back to Portland from New York and was met with a new bundle of joy. More on that in a minute!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures by Shauna Haider

Since I got back, I’ve been in full-on cleaning mode. There’s nothing like a few weeks away to remind you of how little you truly need in this life to be happy. After a night of rest, I flung open my closets and piled up all the unworn clothes and shoes I could possibly muster letting go of. Next, I went through my desk and flat files, making another giant pile of donations. My office feels so much bigger and relaxed now.

I’m a big fan of the mentality of “out with the old and in with the new.” Get rid of what no longer serves or suits you and fill your life with less, but better made things. One of those new-ish, better made things I’m liking are a pair of Tieks — the perfect jolt of color for my mostly black and white wardrobe.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures by Shauna Haider

A lot of you have been asking how Chubby is doing. If you’re wondering who this little guy is, you can read more about him right here. When Joey found him stuck in our furnace last Tuesday night, his eyes weren’t yet open and he could barely walk. A little over a week later, he’s holding onto the syringe of formula when we feed him, walking pretty well and of course, climbing like a champ. I’ll let you know how things progress.

I was in Amsterdam a week and a half ago and when I got home, this Anthropologie catalog, shot entirely in Holland was waiting for me. The photos are gorgeous and remind me of those few magical days. If you’re curious, that’s a Crown and Glory crown hanging on the edge.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures by Shauna Haider

At The Blogcademy in London, The Bathory blended these limited edition bath salts for us and our attendees. Isn’t the packaging cool? I’m exited to finally be home where I actually have a bath to try these out. ;)

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures by Shauna Haider

Speaking of The Blogcademy, it’s been a busy week behind the scenes as we put the finishing touches on four new Home School segments. I’m really excited about the topics we’re covering and will share more with you next Wednesday.

I have the biggest design crush on Jonathan Adler — his mid-century modern aesthetic is right up my alley (and he did the interior of my favorite hotel, The Parker) so when this candle arrived from his assistant, I about lost my mind. Such a strange, bold piece and I can’t get enough of it. Ahhhhh!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures by Shauna Haider

Have a great weekend, everyone. I’ll be catching up on work, squirrel-sitting, and helping my aunt celebrate her 60th birthday (she’s like a second mom to me so it’s an espeically big deal). It feels so good to be home.

P.S. Thanks again for all your sweet, helpful comments and advice about Little Chub-Chub, I really appreciate it.

The Week In Pictures: 8.8.14 | Hello From Amsterdam and New York!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Amsterdam > London > New York > Portland. It’s good to be home but damnnn, there was a lot crammed into this week!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I had the time of my life during the three weeks I spent in Europe but if I’m being completely honest, I was also really beginning to miss the comforts of home. That’s one of the reasons why I think traveling is so important — it forces you to get outside of your comfort zone and experience the way the rest of the world lives. It makes you realize what you’ve been taking for granted while also introducing new habits and ways of thinking that you can take home and incorporate into your everyday life.

Amsterdam taught me that I had no choice but to slow down. The service is much slower, as is the internet. I had to take it easy, even if I felt like crawling the walls for most of it. And in the end, it was a good thing. Now, I’m vowing to take more time to read. Vowing to take more walks. Vowing to write more emails and letters to friends.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

After Amsterdam with a quick stop in London for the night, Gala and I landed back in New York. And, faced with with only one completely empty day to do whatever I wanted, I vowed to make it count. The next day, from 10 am to 10 pm, we criss-crossed the city, covering a total of 15 spots (and yes, I’ll be sharing the exact list of what we did in case you’re short on time in the city that never sleeps, too!)

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

What I love about spending time with Gala is that anything is possible. Anything. As we explored old haunts, I felt like it was 2009 all over again, when we lived together for a month in the city. Having an Elizabeth Taylor moment, I threw caution to the wind and tried on piles of absolutely ridiculous, impractical jewelry.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

As we walked through midtown, I spotted this dapper gentleman at FAO Schwarz.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

This car that was parked on the Upper East Side should have been in a movie it was so pristine and well kept.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

This ornate set of doors in Central Park caught my attention.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

And, as we walked deeper into the park, this was our view. For a few moments, we forgot we were in New York City as the trees and foliage blocked out the sounds of traffic.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

One of my favorite things to do in New York is ogle clothing I can’t afford. This Chloe ensemble? The bomb.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

We passed The Rock and…well…we went to the very top (you’ll see more photos in my New York post next week).

wip_2014_aug8_5

Remember how I said anything is possible? As dusk set in, we entered a 1920s mansion full of disco balls. Some poured out of the marble fireplace while others spun above us as a jazz band played on.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

And, what’s a jazz band without a gaggle of dancing ladies? The whole scene was quite surreal.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

We ended the night at an ex-NBA basketball player’s restaurant, laughing until we cried over dessert. The day had felt like a week. In that moment, exhausted with throbbing feet, I couldn’t have been any happier.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

After dinner, I pushed on — my longtime friend Bianca had just flown home from Mykonos that night and we had just 12 hours to spend together.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

wip_2014_aug8_6

The next day, we spent our lunch at Ladurée in Soho. It felt like the set of a french film with marble statues, jewel toned velvet couches, pastel edged dishes and a beautiful backyard garden.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

I’m now back home in Portland, feeling overwhelmingly inspired and piecing together a dozen posts for you over the next few weeks with new discoveries, travel guides and much more.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Keep and open mind, surround yourself with people you respect, love and trust and when you have the chance to go on an adventure, take it. You never know where you’ll end up. Have a great weekend, everyone!

The Week In Pictures: 8.2.14 | Hello From Holland!

Nubby Twiglet | Hello From Holland

Hello from Holland! How was your week?

Nubby Twiglet | Hello From Holland

Let’s back up a bit…I spent the first half of my week in Berlin (and I’m already dying to go back) but that’s a topic for another post because I literally have a few hundred photos to dig through! I have a Berlin travel post coming very soon but in the meantime, I’ve been hanging out in Amsterdam for the last few days. And boy, it’s been quite the adventure!

The highlight of my trip to Amsterdam so far has been visiting Inntel Hotel (see above) which features the facade of 70 traditional Dutch-style houses. Completely insane!

Nubby Twiglet | Hello From Holland

Of course, no trip to Amsterdam is complete without visiting the canals that wind through the city. Many have baskets of flowers hanging nearby and are lined with parked bicycles.

Nubby Twiglet | Hello From Holland

After strolling along the canals, I stopped into the world famous flower markets. It was interesting to see such a variety of blooms, many that I don’t come across in America.

Nubby Twiglet | Hello From Holland

When I travel, I tend to skip the tourist filled main streets for the side alleys — there always tends to be great cafes, street art and shops lining them.

Nubby Twiglet | Hello From Holland

One thing that gets overshadowed by all the other Amsterdam “must-sees” are the amazing doors. This one in particular grabbed my attention — that’s one serious door knocker, don’t you think?!

Nubby Twiglet | Hello From Holland

I once heard a fact that 1/3 of all the inhabitants of Amsterdam own a bike. After spending a few days here, I believe it. There are often groups of a few hundred clustered in parking lots at the train station and it’s quite the sight — I’ll share more photos soon.

Nubby Twiglet | Hello From Holland

These are a few odds and ends from my European travels. I found a photo booth in Berlin (there are TONS of original ones from the 60s scattered around town), picked up a rad coaster at a cafe and nabbed this classic necklace at Zara in Amsterdam.

Nubby Twiglet | Hello From Holland

Have a great weekend, everyone. I’ll be teaching with The Blogcademy in Amsterdam over the next two days, flying to London on Monday and New York on Tuesday so the next few days are packed. Enjoy yourselves and I’ll see you back here on Monday! xo

The Week In Pictures: 7.25.14 | Summer In London Part 2

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: London

I’ve been to London a few times before but it’s never been as beautiful as this. The weather was great all week and in between teaching two classes, I spent plenty of time exploring the city. One place I ended up visiting multiple times was the new Ace Hotel in Shoreditch. With a photo booth in the lobby, a restaurant that felt like it was right out of Berlin in the 70s and a killer deejay, it ended up turning into our home away from home.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: London

I picked up some treasures along the way: Charbonnel et Walker truffles, a drink coaster and flyer from Hoi Polloi, Dyptique lipbalm from Selfridges and branded ribbon from a stationery shop.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: London

One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the housewares floor of Liberty. They had a bunch of these amazing Chad Wys paintings.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: London

The flowers inside the lobby of Liberty are always so beautiful.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: London

Also, if you walk along the backside of The Ace, there’s a place tucked in there called That Flower Shop. How great is this sign?!

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: London

When visiting London, I never pass up an opportunity to get a touristy snapshot in front of the red phone booths. ;)

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: London

On Thursday night, we hosted a mixer for The Blogcademy at a venue called The Roost. This was my view from the second floor, red scooter and all.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: London

Since I’m normally working from home and wearing a uniform of black skinny jeans and a t-shirt, I love any excuse to dress up. These were our mixer looks.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: London

The inside of The Roost was insane! Each room had a different theme including wallpaper patterns. We spent the night sipping rhubarb and rosemary cocktails, making new friends, hanging out in the photo booth and dancing to Rebbie Jackson (Centipede is our new favorite tune).

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: London

Seriously, check out this room! I’ll be sharing a lot more photos in an upcoming post.

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures: London

I just landed Berlin and am signing off to get ready for an early morning of teaching tomorrow. Have a great weekend!
