I Died And Went To Prop Heaven: The Blogcademy Melbourne

Nubby Twiglet | The Blogcademy Melbourne

Melbourne, you are one amazing city (and not just because you know how to make the best chai lattes in the universe).

I’ll admit it, I was a little thrown off by the first few days of our trip, though — to say that it got off to a rocky start is a slight understatement. So rocky in fact that Kat and I comforted each other the night before class, sipping wine in bed and falling asleep to Michael Bolton videos on Youtube (there’s nothing quite like a familiar voice to soothe your soul). When you’re traveling and a handful of things go awry, it can feel like the end of the world without the usual comforts of home nearby.

I woke up for class the next morning, hoping for the best and then…we ended up in a traffic jam like no other. But boy oh boy, all my worries disappeared when I sauntered into The Establishment Studios.

Housed behind a totally nondescript door was a treasure trove of props, colorfully painted walls and enough furniture to outfit an entire boutique hotel.

To me, it was the equivalent of winning the prop lottery. Industrial racks filled the far corner of the space lined with antique dishes, vases, taxidermy, wallpaper, books and every trinket imaginable. You could basically be the star of Instagram if you had this haul in real life.

And, our class. Our class! Their sense of style blew my basic black dress and sneakers away. And, their personalities shined just as brightly — just check out that class photo below!

Cath and Steph had flown in from Port Douglas, a.k.a. the ultimate paradise. I loved these two — their big smiles and great questions livened up the front row.

What’s a class without a few ridiculous selfies as keepsakes?! Kobi, Anna and Tillie were instant BFF’s.

Nubby Twiglet | The Blogcademy Melbourne

Some of our still life compositions got….ahem, very creative.

I don’t remember my class photos EVER being this lively. I mean, if school was this fun, I never would have wanted it to end.

WORK IT, GIRL.

Nubby Twiglet | The Blogcademy Melbourne

On breaks, we took full advantage of this gorgeous white room, covering it in confetti. On my to-do list for this year is to practice my throw — that robotic stance isn’t the most welcoming!

Green Press brought by oodles of delicious juices and dear lord, I want a case of the almond vanilla sea salt flavor. If they ever make it to the Northern Hemisphere, I’ll be the first in line. #fangirl

By the end of the two days, our class was ready to move in and make the prop studio our permanent residence. Oh, maybe that was just me. 😉

Melbourne, I love you. I love your alleys, your array of well-branded juice bars, arcades of random shops, your appreciation of a well-blended chai and your beautiful walls of graffiti.

Special thanks to our Melbourne sponsors including: Brand Me for the mugs and colored pencils, Reeta Krishna for the WordPress For Beginners books, Pepper Ink for the tattoo transfers, Fizzy Bunting for the confetti, Violent Maiden for the eyeshadows, and of course, Crown and Glory for the sparkly ears (an absolute necessity).

Branded Photo Booth strips? Nothing is better than coming to class….and having your favorite vice waiting for you. Thanks to The Photo Booth Guys for making dreams come true (hire them for your next party — their setup has an INSTAGRAM PRINTER!)

Just When You Think You’ve Seen It All…Blogcademy Washington, D.C. Proves You Wrong!

Nubby Twiglet | The Blogcademy Washington D.C.

It goes without saying that every Blogcademy class brings out an eclectic mix of characters but Washington, D.C. was in a league of its own. In this particular audience, we had:

1. A real life princess (with an awe-inspiring wardrobe to match).
2. A 12 year old Girl Scout (in floral print Doc Marten boots).
3. A hip hop artist (all the way from Miami).
4. A pug (though I’m not positive she was taking notes).
5. A professional fire-spinner (enough said).

Nubby Twiglet | The Blogcademy Washington D.C.

It was one of our best classes all year….and I nearly missed it. The Friday before class, I was sitting in LA, waiting to board my flight when it got delayed. And, delayed again. And again. If I got on it, there was no way I’d make my connecting flight so I booked another ticket from my phone as I watched it board. The stars aligned and I made it to D.C. at 2 a.m. Needless to say, I wasn’t feeling fresh-faced the next morning! But, all that was pushed aside when our class began trickling in. They were beaming, incredibly welcoming and excited to learn — their energy was truly infectious.

Nubby Twiglet | The Blogcademy Washington D.C.

During class, we have a lot of students who are wondering where to start. They have full time jobs, they have families, they have side businesses…their lives are very full before blogging even comes into the picture. We always remind them that it’s not about being the best blogger ever right out of the gates. It’s about taking the time to develop your voice and style. There’s no race to the finish line.

Nubby Twiglet | The Blogcademy Washington D.C.

The most important reason to begin blogging is because you love it and as you find more time, you can work more posts into your schedule.

Mel was such a bright spot in our class, making the rounds and chatting with everyone on breaks — she’d traveled down all the way from Nova Scotia! And, we always love a student who’s perfectly on brand. 😉

There’s never a lack of style in our classes, that’s for sure! Running a blog that stands out from the pack really comes down to being unique and owning who you are.

Nubby Twiglet | The Blogcademy Washington D.C.

Oh, Anna! Our youngest student ever, she’d been working towards earning a Girl Scouts badge for blogging. Anna came to class ready to take notes and kept right up. All I have to say is…she more than earned that badge!

Nubby Twiglet | The Blogcademy Washington D.C.

Look at those smiles! I think even Harpo the pug was smiling!

Nubby Twiglet | The Blogcademy Washington D.C.

Thank you to our awesome mix of D.C. sponsors including Remixed By Jacki head scarves, WordPress For Beginners books by Reeta Krishna, Pink Samurai hand-knit scarves, Crown and Glory sparkly ears and of course, OSI for printing our custom tote designs!

Nubby Twiglet | The Blogcademy Washington D.C.

And finally, a special thanks goes out to Erica, the most kick-ass, organized intern in all the land! We adore you!

Home School Cyber Monday Sale

Also, if you’re interested in boosting your knowledge in a particular blogging subject, we’re offering a one day only sale. Save 50% off of all 13 Home School modules — at just $10.00 each, they’re a total steal! Each features a video, overview and worksheets to drive key learnings home.

All you have to do is enter the discount code CYBER at checkout!

If you’ve been wondering what goes into a media kit, how to put together a rad still life (and rule at Instagram), how to make your image more consistent online, the keys to creating killer content, how to make your About page stand out and how to deal with negativity online, we’ve got you covered. Each segment is snappy, information-packed and to the point.

But, don’t just take it from us:

“Before I started using Home School I had a list as long as my arm of things I hated about my online presence, but no idea how to get started, or the time to dedicate to a full course. I felt like it was a never-ending list of changes and areas I wanted to grow in but had no direction; it felt completely overwhelming! Blogcademy Home School is perfect for me, because I can take one module at a time to concentrate on and action the changes required as and when I need to, by referring back to the super useful worksheets and PDFs provided.

My favourite is the Brand Audit module; I took an afternoon out to watch the video and complete the tasks and learnt a whole bunch of useful stuff about my brand that I would’ve never thought about before! Blogcademy Home School isn’t just for baby bloggers; anyone making a living from having a presence online, no matter how seasoned, will benefit from stitching together a handful of modules to create their own tailored course.”

Happy Cyber Monday….and I hope to meet you (virtually) today!

A Weekend In Amsterdam Full of Flowers, Cheese, Stroopwafels and The Blogcademy!

2014_nubbytwiglet_blogcademy_amsterdam_1

While in Amsterdam with The Blogcademy, we kicked off our weekend of teaching at The Thinking Hut, a rad building built in 1912 that houses a co-working space during the week.

2014_nubbytwiglet_blogcademy_amsterdam_14

2014_nubbytwiglet_blogcademy_amsterdam_16

The decor in this space was off the hook — check out those colored cabinets! The Dutch have such a natural flair that I really admire.

2014_nubbytwiglet_blogcademy_amsterdam_2

We had quite the international mix of ladies in this class, hailing from Belgium, Ireland, the U.S. and more. After teaching this class so many times in different countries, it always amazes me how similar we all really are when it comes to careers, blogging and relationships.

2014_nubbytwiglet_blogcademy_amsterdam_6

To switch things up for this class, we pushed a row of tables together the length of the room and set up communal seating versus our usual rows. It turned out really well — everyone was chattier than usual (sometimes a little too much so!) and because of that, a lot of the girls walked away at the end with some great friendships.

2014_nubbytwiglet_blogcademy_amsterdam_9

There was a huge supermarket around the corner from our Air bnb apartment (oh man, I have some stories of buying the wrong things because I couldn’t read the labels!) so we stocked up on lots of treats. Sugar for all!

2014_nubbytwiglet_blogcademy_amsterdam_10

I fell hard for Padmini’s coordinated sweater and skirt set. Ahhh, so good!

Sponsors

2014_nubbytwiglet_blogcademy_amsterdam_4

Thanks to our Amsterdam sponsors for the kick-ass goodie bag mix: Tattoo transfers by Hello Harriet, WordPress for Beginners books by Reeta Krishna, sparkly ears by Crown and Glory, branded pens by Go Promotional, tattoo transfers by Pepper Ink Vintage, paper decor by Strange Case, no-snag hair ties by Mane Message and notebooks by Veronica Dearly .

2014_nubbytwiglet_blogcademy_amsterdam_5

Oh, and a special shout-out to Sketch Inc. for these fantastic notebooks. I still have a stash I’m happily working through!

2014_nubbytwiglet_blogcademy_amsterdam_3

2014_nubbytwiglet_blogcademy_amsterdam_13

And finally, Cornela Blom is a goddess — she not only created this beautiful flower backdrop that was the ultimate conversation piece during class but also, corsages for all!

2014_nubbytwiglet_blogcademy_amsterdam_12

Thanks to all the wonderful ladies who joined us in Amsterdam — I loved getting to know so many of you. And thank you for following along! Next up: Australia!
