A Peek Inside My Holiday Party

Nubby Twiglet | The Holiday Party

It took 5 years to have an official gathering at my house but Friday night, it finally happened! As a perfectionist with annoyingly high standards, I’d put too much pressure on myself to have our house perfect before we had more than just close friends and family over and I now realize how silly that was.

Houses are meant to be lived in — not perfectly pinnable, artfully decorated masterpieces. And I have Joey to thank for kicking me in gear, setting the date and inviting all our friends and family before I had a chance to backtrack!

With a Spotify playlist of soft rock hits of the 70s playing and our Christmas tree twinkling, Rocky slipped into his holiday sweater, I threw on some sequins and Joey whipped up some (very intoxicating) punch. And with that, our guests flowed in.

After the party started, I barely took another photo — I just wanted to soak up everyone’s company. As usual, my grandparents, Betty and Sharky were the life of the party. No surprise there! I had more than one friend pull me aside, completely blown away that my grandpa was 86! For the record, his secret to a long life is chopping wood all day (in cowboy boots), crisp mountain air and the occasional cold beer. Nice and simple.

I spent part of the night having the best conversations with Alexandra about the merits of new Country music, Hawaii, David Duchovny, Marilyn Manson and cheese. Though, not quite in that order. I am so glad she’s in Portland!

I had pulled up some punch recipes on Pinterest but Joey rejected them for his own mix. One sip later and I was glad he did his own thing!

Me: “Would you like some punch?”
Grandma: “Is it spiked?”
Me: “Yes, with Everclear.”
Grandma: “I’ll take some!”

As all the guests filed out into the darkness, I glanced at our table and thanks to hostess gifts, counted a total of 15 bottles of wine…and I’m not a very big drinker. So, it’s time to plan another party! I’m on a total roll now. Happy holidays, everyone!

H&M Home Part 2: More Wallet Friendly Finds

H&M Home Part 2

When H&M’s home line launched on their site last month, I rejoiced at all of their stylish offerings and went a little nuts, ordering a bundle of goodies. Best of all, everything that showed up on my doorstep looked exactly as it had on the website and was of decent quality, considering the ridiculously affordable prices. My favorite items in my last order? These subway ticket towels and this espresso mug.

At this point, after living in my house for four years, the major construction projects are nearing an end but overall, it still is lacking some style. There’s a reason why I tend to only show the same three rooms on my blog — the others still need some oomph and I’m no interior designer!

H&M Home Part 2

I’ve been looking for some odds and ends to spice things up around my place. Over the weekend, I took a peek on the H&M site once again and they’ve made a bunch of new additions. Here’s a few I’ve added to my must have list: 1. Egg Cup, 2. Tray, 3. Vase, 4. Tea Towel, 5. Plate, 6. Metal Tin, 7. Glass Vase, 8. Candle Holder, 9. Hangers, 10. Candle and 11. Table Runner.

Have you ordered anything from H&M Home yet? What did you think?

Add Some Style To Your Surroundings with H&M Home

H&M Home

I like nice, stylish house stuff that doesn’t break the bank as much as the next person but lately, I’ve been feeling completely, totally uninspired. Nothing has really spoken to me, style-wise. We finished remodeling the basement guest room months ago (I gave you a sneak peek on Friday) but it felt a little barren. Our kitchen towels were all stained and verging on threadbare but I was bored by everything I came across. We needed new mats for our bathrooms but I didn’t want another solid colored option.

And then, I was idly sitting on iChat last week when Bianca sent me a link to some gorgeous housewares. After clicking, my reaction went something like this: “Where is this from?! I need to know! Tell me more! NOW!”

I was suddenly dropped into a retail oasis of type-covered items, many of which were influenced by vintage New York themes. You know, the coolest subway tickets and maps. And it was all available from H&M. Wallet-friendly price tags for stuff I’d been dreaming about for ages?! That never happens!

Needless to say, the subway ticket-inspired hand towels will dress up our bathroom and (hopefully) distract from the fact that it really needs to be remodeled. And the map-covered duvet will add some oomph to our all white guestroom.

These a few of my favorite things: 1. soap dispenser, 2. soap dish, 3. bath mat, 4. guest towels, 5. duvet cover, 6. glass jar, 7. candle, 8. tray, 9. mug, 10. napkins and 11. hand towel.

I am so glad H&M has online shopping now because I’ve never seen any of the home line in our Portland location. Needless to say, I’m pretty excited to spruce things up around my house. And this time, there’s no remodeling required!

P.S. I am still working on the slow server issues with Dreamhost. Apologies if the load times are dragging on your end, it’s been a frustrating week trying to get it sorted and I appreciate your patience!

Latest & Greatest #19: Fornasetti

Latest & Greatest: Fornasetti

When it comes to collections, I dream of having a handful of Fornasetti plates scattered across my living room wall someday. While plate collections had always seemed a bit antiquated to me, my mind was quickly changed two years ago when I spotted the plate-covered wall at The Viceroy, designed by Kelly Wearstler.

Latest & Greatest: Fornasetti

I’ve long admired the endless expressions of Fornasetti’s signature plates. Over his lifetime, founder Piero Fornasetti created an astounding 11,000 items, many of which featured the face of opera singer Lina Cavalieri. To date, over 350 of her expressions have covered the world-famous plates!

Fornasetti’s designs are instantly recognizable because they most commonly feature black and white motifs, the sun and time themes. Here are a few of my current favorites, all available through Barneys:

A Helping Hand: These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things

Office Supplies

One of my biggest weaknesses by far is office supplies. Everyone has their triggers and when it comes to accouterments to decorate my space, there’s never enough. I tell myself that it doesn’t matter because these are things I use and therefore, somehow practical (excuses, excuses).

With that mindset, I picked up this hand cup last week. And with that, an Instagram shot of the said hand last night produced a hilarious roundup of one-liners. It’s been great for holding pens, makeup brushes and so much more. And even better, the end is magnetic for those stray paper clips and bobby pins!

Beyond that, I also stopped into Canoe for the first time ever last week. I know, I know…how had I never made it into this store?! A minimalist haven of perfectly curated everyday items, it very much reminded me of the MoMA gift shop. I walked away with a beautiful Ogami notebook comprised of pages made of stone that also happen to be waterproof. And, a very gigantic eraser. It’s so large it’ll easily double as a paperweight.

Office Supplies

How many office supplies are too much? I haven’t quite figured that out yet but I need to get my addiction in check before Hoarders comes calling.
