Coffee at Home? Yes! My New Routine

Coffee at Home: Delonghi KMix

Coffee at home. What a novel idea! Not. Sadly, for me it was. I knew how expensive espresso machines were and I kept using that as an excuse to not own one. Yet, when I looked at my bank statement every month and realized how much I was forking over at local coffee shops, I knew that in a few short months, the machine and accessories would come close to the same cost. It was time to take the leap, once and for all.

Growing up, my parents were early adopters of at-home espresso machines. In the late 80s, at least in Portland, they weren’t common at all but my mom just happened to be a gourmet food buyer and had some connections (I think their original Gaggia is still buried in my dad’s shed somewhere!) but their at-home routine never rubbed off on me.

I never liked espresso, or coffee at all. Maybe that’s because the first time I had the chance to drink coffee as a legit adult was at my suburban office job where I’d spend my summer breaks from college in the accounting department, catching up their very lax filing (the worst!). The coffee maker was in the warehouse and I’d watch my coworkers, 30 years my senior, chain smoking and guzzling their black coffee every morning. It had that terrible burnt smell and was so unappealing.

Things slowly shifted for me at my first agency job. When you have a delivery of fresh Stumptown beans every week and often work late into the night, coffee quickly becomes your new best friend, whether you really like it or not. Over time, I got used to the taste. And walking to coffee shops with friends became a nice social activity and an excuse to take a break from the computer. Still, I was aware that I was racking up a small fortune with every swipe of my debit card (it’s mildly funny when you log into your checking account and realize half of the expenses are for coffees shops).

Over the holidays, I started researching espresso machines and landed on the DeLonghi KMix ones. I’ve been around cheaply made, mostly plastic machines and they never held up for more than a year of regular use. I am a fan of saving up and buying what you want in the first place and being really satisfied versus buying something cheaper and then pining away, wishing you’d bought your first choice…and then getting it down the road anyway.

The Delonghi model I settled on had solid reviews overall (realistically, I don’t think any espresso machine under a grand has perfect reviews — crazy but true) and appealingly came in a selection of bright colors. Joey loves making espresso (I got really lucky in the dude department!) so I put him in charge and surprisingly, I actually like his coffee better than almost all the shops around town.

We keep Torani vanilla syrup on hand and usually pick up a bag of pre-ground beans at Trader Joe’s that easily lasts us two weeks. I like either skim or vanilla soy milk in my coffee and really, the whole process couldn’t be simpler.

Coffee at Home: Delonghi KMix

These are a few of my favorite things in our little setup: 1. Avril Paint Chip Table Runner in blue or green (mine is sold out), 2. Torani Vanilly Syrup, 3. Saturday Morning Mug in Windowpane, 4. Saturday Morning Mug in Yellow, 5. DeLonghi Espresso Maker, 6. KRUPS Frothing Pitcher, 7. Coffee Mug Holder and 8. Crate & Barrel Espresso Cups (sadly out of stock!).

I still like the social aspect of going out for coffee but overall, I’ve cut those trips down to less than half. That’s not only a huge savings but it’s good for the environment (coffee cups mugs versus to-go cups). I’d like to continue to make a conscious effort to cut back on going out for coffee and two months in, we’re still using the machine every day….so far so good!

I want to know, do you make coffee at home?

Domino Magazine Special Edition: Small Spaces!

Domino Magazine Small Spaces

Since Domino Magazine shuttered in 2009, there’s been a gaping hole in stylish, accessible decor magazines. I subscribed from the very first issue and though the overall aesthetic didn’t exactly mesh with that of my own, I appreciated the consistently seamless mix of high and low — it was so much more relatable than the other interior magazines I came across that only featured spreads of massive glass houses alongside modern furniture with minimum price tags of a few thousand dollars.

Domino Magazine Small Spaces

During the years it was around, I read every issue from cover to cover but admittedly, the relevance didn’t quite sink in at the time. Since I hadn’t yet bought a house (and didn’t have a decorating budget for that matter!) it was a fun read but I sadly recycled all of my issues after I read them.

Thankfully, there’s now occasional special editions of Domino centered around specific themes. I shared outtakes from the Quick Fixes issue here and just picked up the newest release, Small Spaces which I find to be even better curated than the last.

Domino Magazine Small Spaces

I like the overall premise behind the Small Spaces issue — making best of the limited space you currently have instead of seeking out a bigger place. After all, any space, no matter how small can be spruced up with fresh paint, a dash of patterns and a little organization.

Loaded with tons of applicable tips and tricks and organized by room, the photos are gorgeous and yes, the sources of the items are clearly listed. My favorite section in the issue by far is Organize Absolutely Everything (because I am obsessive about everything having its place) and the suggestions are super basic and applicable.

Domino Magazine Small Spaces

I know there are those Domino diehards out there that lament that these limited issues “just aren’t the same” but I have a different mentality. Times change, I love the overall design aesthetic these issues have and I’m just glad to have a home decor “magazine” to pore over that’s not full of only outrageously expensive, unattainable things. Because while aspirational, what’s the point?

Domino Magazine Small Spaces

Besides Domino, two of my other go-to home decor / lifestyle magazines have long been shuttered as well. Remember NEST and Blueprint? Sigh. Do you have any other suggestions for other home decor and lifestyle mags out there that are hip yet relatable?

P.S. I picked up my issue at Barnes & Noble but you can also grab digital editions here.

It’s Time To Get Organized!

A new year means the chance for a fresh start for many of us.

Along with all the usual resolutions, a lot of us aim to get more organized (or, at least the OCD Virgo in me does!) I associate organization with feeling more calm, cool and collected. When I’m able to find what I need when I need it, life doesn’t feel so chaotic. These are a few fail-proof ways I employ to keep my home, belongings and business organized.

Possessions As Art

Nubby Twiglet Get Organized

When it comes to organization, It’s not just about making sure all your possessions are put away just so-so. I like the idea of treating some of my favorite belongings as art. I’ve always had a few pairs of shoes sitting out in my office (what can I say, I’m a shoe freak) but they’d get so dusty. When I saw this storage solution in Lucky Magazine, I jumped on it. These Z Gallerie glass bell jars add a nice, dramatic touch and are more affordable than they look. We also have another in our living room.

Invoices

I am very particular about the way my invoices look even though I know that means way more work for me as a business owner. I encourage you to come up with a consistent set of naming conventions that work for you. I have a folder called INVOICES and for each job I start, I set up a new job folder labeled with NT000_CLIENT_NAME. Inside of that folder is an InDesign document of the client’s invoice and another of the work order / contract.

I am strongly considering switching over to Pancake, as it makes invoicing, sending and receiving payments a lot more seamless. And it tracks who has and hasn’t paid up! What makes Pancake even more unique is that there’s a one-time fee to buy it outright versus a lot of other services which charge you a monthly fee. For more invoicing insights, check out this post by Breanna Rose.

Sorting By Color

Nubby Twiglet Get Organized

One of my no-fail tricks for staying organized is to sort items by color including books, shoes, socks and clothing. I tend to never forget the color of an item and this solution has served me well for the last few years. And, it looks great. As in most old houses, closet space is very very limited where we live so I have two oversized freestanding IKEA closets pushed next to each other. One holds only coats, skirts and dresses, arranged by item and then by color. The other holds only shirts and sweaters (shown above). I like peeking into a rainbow every morning.

Blog Content (Offline)

Nubby Twiglet Get Organized

I keep my blog post content very organized since I sometimes have ideas that may not go live for a few weeks. There’s always a folder on my desktop called BLOG_UPCOMING and each potential post gets its own folder. When you click in, this is what it looks like: a text document of the post, the web-ready assets and a folder of the edited PSDs. Once a post goes live, I drag the final web-ready jpegs into another desktop folder called BLOG_2013 so I always have a clean backup of all my edited online content.

Business Record Keeping

I’m not great when it comes to numbers and keeping business paperwork organized. I’ll admit to being hit with “Did I remember to send that invoice out and did it get paid?” a little too often. For 2013, I’ve vowed to keep better track of my business income and all the fun details that go along with it and in the process, I discovered Zoe Rooney’s small business record keeping spreadsheet. Since I’m exclusively on Macs and already have Numbers software, it’s perfect. Easy enough for me to understand with all the basics ready to go.

Even though I’ll be using this spreadsheet, I still print out every single PayPal invoice and keep every single receipt in a zip pouch next to my desk. Better to be safe than sorry if your accountant or, god forbid, The IRS calls! Speaking of accountants, I only ever use a CPA to do my business taxes. It’s worth the extra money and remember, the fee you pay them is a business write-off.

Office Storage

Nubby Twiglet Get Organized

The best investment I’ve made in my office setup is picking up two flat files from IKEA. Having everything I could ever need from stationery to stamps to proofs to old notebooks in one place is such a time saver. And, when pushed together they make an awesome tabletop when I’m working on other projects.

Hopefully these organizational tip methods will inspire you, too.

Holiday DIY: Customize Your Ornaments!

3M ScotchBlue Painter's Tape Holiday DIY Customize Your Ornaments

With Christmas fast approaching, I decided it was well time for an ornament DIY project! This is our first year with a full-size tree and I wanted it to have some personal touches. Store-bought ornaments are perfectly fine but we all have unique tastes and my goal was to find a way to spice up our tree with a few of my favorite patterns and symbols.

Joey and I got to work with a handful of simple, graphic designs we are so happy with the way they turned out! Now it’s your turn — we promise that this is super easy and much more manageable than the shakeboard D.I.Y. he came up with last time!

3M Scotch Blue Painter's Tape Holiday DIY Customize Your Ornaments

Let’s get started! First, we found these oversized silver ball ornaments at Target. Have you seen their Christmas decor section this year?! It’s AWESOME. Since these were going to be the main accents for our tree, we wanted them to be larger than the rest of our ornaments.

Supplies needed:

• One roll of ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape

• Krylon X-Metals Spraypaint

• An X-Acto Knife

3M Scotch Blue Painter's Tape Holiday DIY Customize Your Ornaments

For designs, it’s best to stick with angular, bold shapes and patterns that can easily be masked off on spherical surfaces. Think along the lines of varying stripes, symbols, letterforms, chevron patterns. To customize your ornaments, first mask off the ornament surface completely. Secondly, trace on design. Next, cut design out of tape. Once that’s finished, spray in design in the color of your choice. And once it’s completely dry (we let ours sit overnight just to be sure), peel off tape. See, that was easy!

I am SO excited to finally have a cross ornament! And a Helvetica A! I’ve used both elements in my design projects for a long, long time and it’s nice to have those special additions to our tree. I’m sure we’ll come up with even more for next year.

3M Scotch Blue Tape Holiday DIY Customize Your Ornaments

This is the first year that we’re all ready for Christmas early enough to actually sit back and enjoy the decorations!! How about you? Have you decorated yet?

Hello, Yellow: Poppin For the Holidays!

Poppin Holiday Gift Set

Two weeks ago, I was waxing poetic about Poppin and their rad, brightly colored office accouterments. I’m a firm believer that a clean workspace translates to a less cluttered mind and was over the moon when Poppin reached out and let me pick out one of their holiday gift sets.

Poppin Holiday Gift Set

I was in need of some brightening up in my very black and white office so I chose the Pencils of Promise Pack which is named after the organization Poppin works with to build schools for children living in poverty. I love that they give back to educational institutions. There are lots of other brightly colored bundles to choose from as well.

As a native Portlander, I’m accustomed to the six months of overcast drizzle we’re in the midst of but at the same time, it does get old fast. Being surrounded by all these bright colored accessories is making me feel way better and I feel so grown up at 31 finally having a matching pencil cup, tape dispenser and stapler!

Poppin Holiday Gift Set

I always feel like I’m lacking in the basics — my favorite part of the bundle is the ruler. It’s thick, weighty and the numbers are massive. I can’t seem to draw a straight line to save my life so I see it getting a lot of use.

The Week In Pictures: 11.16.12

Nubby Twiglet The Week In Pictures

Oh me oh my, what a week it’s been! On Wednesday morning, we launched The Blogcademy London and by the time I woke up on Thursday morning, it was all sold out! Unbelievable. We’re already hard at work sourcing goodie bag treats, ordering collateral and tightening up content to make this event extra special.

With Fall in full force, I’ve had the urge to make my house even more of a home. What I mean by that is adding more special touches, making things feel more cozy and generally more inviting. Since our house interior from the walls to the decor to the furniture is mostly black and white (surprise, surprise!) it can feel cold and austere so I’ve been adding touches of color to warm things up. This Pantone planter I found on Fab is my new favorite office addition. I also have stacks of books with colorful spines so I’ve been working those into decor as well.

Nubby Twiglet The Week In Pictures

A big chunk of my free time this week was spent getting Blogcademy graphics together. I’m in charge of all the visuals and we had a lot to get done for the London launch between Kat’s blog, Gala’s blog, my blog and the website. For the London event I wanted to keep the main elements of our visual center intact but add a fresh spin so I spent a few hours in Illustrator coming up with some updated lockups. This exploration phase is always my favorite part.

Nubby Twiglet The Week In Pictures

I didn’t get out much this week but still made time to get inspired through the stack of 50 or so magazines I have sitting around, sadly unread. I love this chalkboard wall treatment that I spotted in the September issue of Lucky Magazine. I want a wall like that! Have any of you used chalkboard paint? How do you like it?

Nubby Twiglet The Week In Pictures

Back on the book front, my computer always felt a little low but I never gave it much thought. Then when I was shuffling around my office this weekend I got on the books as decor kick again and raised things up. Such an improvement!

Nubby Twiglet The Week In Pictures

When The Blogcademy sold out, Gala had the idea that we should create a video to launch a second date. The thing is, I NEVER do videos. EVER. I was never into the idea of acting and I never took any drama classes in high school and well, it shows! Haha. I mispronounced Curtain Road Studios as Curtain Rod Studios and then Rocky kept pacing in and out of my office (check him out in the lower left!). Most of the time, I just came off sounding like a deranged robot. I know the pros always say that you should act like you’re talking to a friend but what happens when you’re home alone? Do you just come off as even more crazy? Ahh! All I can say is that I have major respect for all of you who regularly make videos — it’s so much harder than it looks! Any tips you can bestow?

Have a great weekend, everyone! I’m hoping to see family, drink a ton of spiced cider and cut my to-do list in half.

How about you? Any fun plans?

Latest & Greatest #13: Poppin Office Supplies

Latest and Greatest

Being a self-proclaimed office supplies junkie, I took notice when I saw a feature on Poppin last year in Lucky magazine. At that time, the site hadn’t officially launched yet and I remember filling out a form that promised a free gift. Sure enough, a few weeks later a pack of shiny black pens and a handwritten note showed up in my mailbox. Nothing entices me like a handwritten note! Poppin has grown significantly since then, outfitting all the cool kids with their clean-lined, brightly hued products.

I’m a very visual person so I love the Design a Desk feature, which allows you to pick and choose your perfect color combinations for the must-have basics. And if you’re very particular about the palette of your office, this is your place because you can shop by color.

Poppin Office Supplies

Some of my desktop favorites: 01. Medium Spiral Notebook, 02. Stapler, 03. Ruler, 04. Pen Cup, 05. Signature Ballpoints, 06. Eco Calculator, 07. Tape Dispenser, 08. Map Tacks and 09. Inboxes.

I applaud companies like Poppin who strive to turn typically mundane items into an inspiring, colorful, well-designed experience and believe in giving back.

Adventures with Flat Files and Serious Organization

nubby twiglet flat files

Thanks to now having two flat files, my office is the most organized it’s ever been. Flat files are most commonly seen in studio and agency settings and are used to store client proofs and other oversized materials. They’re also an ideal way for creatives to organize everything from photos, artist proofs, sketches, collage materials, blueprints, scrap booking supplies and more.

nubby twiglet flat files

I have two identical flat files because the left is dedicated to storing stuff I’ve made while the right is dedicated to supplies. To give you an idea of what they can be used for, here’s what I keep in mine:

• The left holds: 1. my screenprinted posters, 2. print collateral from my clients, 3. 4. and 5. print-outs, process sketches and proofs and 6. my print portfolios.

• The right holds: 1. Promotional supplies including stamps, stickers and mailing labels, 2. printer paper, envelopes, stencils and rulers, 3. collaging scraps, 4. collage books and magazine tears, 5. notebooks, 6. office supplies.

nubby twiglet flat files

Because I was on a budget and also didn’t need a large set of flat files, I found mine at IKEA. The bottom drawer organizers were also an IKEA find. If you’re in the market for a larger, more traditional set of flat files, try Dick Blick, and Amazon ( these and these are nice).

Flat files have fixed my lack of storage space and given my office a whole new level of organization. Perhaps they can do the same for you!
