Coffee at Home? Yes! My New Routine

Coffee at Home: Delonghi KMix

Coffee at home. What a novel idea! Not. Sadly, for me it was. I knew how expensive espresso machines were and I kept using that as an excuse to not own one. Yet, when I looked at my bank statement every month and realized how much I was forking over at local coffee shops, I knew that in a few short months, the machine and accessories would come close to the same cost. It was time to take the leap, once and for all.

Growing up, my parents were early adopters of at-home espresso machines. In the late 80s, at least in Portland, they weren’t common at all but my mom just happened to be a gourmet food buyer and had some connections (I think their original Gaggia is still buried in my dad’s shed somewhere!) but their at-home routine never rubbed off on me.

I never liked espresso, or coffee at all. Maybe that’s because the first time I had the chance to drink coffee as a legit adult was at my suburban office job where I’d spend my summer breaks from college in the accounting department, catching up their very lax filing (the worst!). The coffee maker was in the warehouse and I’d watch my coworkers, 30 years my senior, chain smoking and guzzling their black coffee every morning. It had that terrible burnt smell and was so unappealing.

Things slowly shifted for me at my first agency job. When you have a delivery of fresh Stumptown beans every week and often work late into the night, coffee quickly becomes your new best friend, whether you really like it or not. Over time, I got used to the taste. And walking to coffee shops with friends became a nice social activity and an excuse to take a break from the computer. Still, I was aware that I was racking up a small fortune with every swipe of my debit card (it’s mildly funny when you log into your checking account and realize half of the expenses are for coffees shops).

Over the holidays, I started researching espresso machines and landed on the DeLonghi KMix ones. I’ve been around cheaply made, mostly plastic machines and they never held up for more than a year of regular use. I am a fan of saving up and buying what you want in the first place and being really satisfied versus buying something cheaper and then pining away, wishing you’d bought your first choice…and then getting it down the road anyway.

The Delonghi model I settled on had solid reviews overall (realistically, I don’t think any espresso machine under a grand has perfect reviews — crazy but true) and appealingly came in a selection of bright colors. Joey loves making espresso (I got really lucky in the dude department!) so I put him in charge and surprisingly, I actually like his coffee better than almost all the shops around town.

We keep Torani vanilla syrup on hand and usually pick up a bag of pre-ground beans at Trader Joe’s that easily lasts us two weeks. I like either skim or vanilla soy milk in my coffee and really, the whole process couldn’t be simpler.

These are a few of my favorite things in our little setup: 1. Avril Paint Chip Table Runner in blue or green (mine is sold out), 2. Torani Vanilly Syrup, 3. Saturday Morning Mug in Windowpane, 4. Saturday Morning Mug in Yellow, 5. DeLonghi Espresso Maker, 6. KRUPS Frothing Pitcher, 7. Coffee Mug Holder and 8. Crate & Barrel Espresso Cups (sadly out of stock!).

I still like the social aspect of going out for coffee but overall, I’ve cut those trips down to less than half. That’s not only a huge savings but it’s good for the environment (coffee cups mugs versus to-go cups). I’d like to continue to make a conscious effort to cut back on going out for coffee and two months in, we’re still using the machine every day….so far so good!

I want to know, do you make coffee at home?

Orange Obsessed

Orange Obsessed

I’m on a big ol’ citrus kick. For the last few months, I’ve been consuming mandarins nonstop (my favorites are from Trader Joe’s and still have the stems). Beyond that, I have a new appreciation for all shades of orange — in a lot of ways, to me it feels a lot more modern and inviting than red.

When I spotted this orange-covered shirt at J. Crew while in LA, images of sunny orange groves and flashbacks of Tragic Kingdom danced through my head. The button-up shirt is a departure from my normal style but this was just so much fun and I love the airy silk blend. Every time I wear it, it’s a great conversation starter; the orange one-liners never stop (orange you glad…).

Orange Obsessed

Here’s some of my favorite citrusy-hued items at the moment:

1. Nars Polish, 2. Givenchy Medium Pandora, 3. Kate Spade Gingham Phone Case, 4. Stella McCartney Slingback Wedge and 5. J. Crew Perfect Shirt in Citrus.

P.S. After some digging around, it appears that both the orange shirt and matching phone case have nearly sold out from J. Crew online but I bet they still have some in-store!

Latest & Greatest: Woven Bracelets

Over the weekend, I was showing Kat and Gala around Hawthorne, a street in S.E. Portland jam-packed with locally owned boutiques, restaurants and vintage stores. We popped in The Gold Door, a store that is filled with the smell of incense and brightly colored religious paraphernalia, skulls, imported decor and jewelry. I’ve always thought of it as a shop that’s perfect for picking up a unique gift for the eccentric and adventurous globe trotter in your life.

I spotted these handwoven plastic bracelets grouped on a table and picked up a handful. Gala thought they reminded her of Dries van Noten and I laughed at the designer reference, noting that the price was a whole four dollars each!

I left with these three and paired them the next day with my black flowered dress. I have a lot of upcoming travel and sometimes a handful of accessories are just what’s needed to spice up those wardrobe basics. These days, it’s the really small things that get me excited, including these plastic bracelets.

Have you picked up anything new to spice up your wardrobe lately?

Latest & Greatest: Kate Spade Saturday

Truth be told, I’ve barely been bothered to shop (beyond house-related items) since I returned from Europe two months ago. We’ve been very busy remodeling since the new year and I’ve had little time or interest in perusing the web in the name of fun and personal consumption.

But, all that shifted in a quick moment last week when I laid eyes on Kate Spade Saturday. A new lower-priced diffusion collection, it’s bright, mod and overflowing with two of my favorite things: stripes and yellow.

Latest & Greatest: Kate Spade Saturday

It’s very rare for me, but sometimes, do you come across an item, a collection or an entire store that feels like it was pulled directly from your stream of consciousness? Like you’ve been dreaming up specific items for years and then suddenly, they’re in existence, right before your eyes? I’m feeling that way about Saturday at the moment. I love the fun, youthful simplicity of their products.

And, not only are their offerings fun but I’m equally enamored by the bold colors, patterns and grids of their graphic design. All around awesome.

Have you checked out Saturday yet? What do you think?

The Blogcademy and MagCloud: Poster Crazy!

The Blogcademy MagCloud Posters

When you need to promote an event or get your designs printed on nice quality paper, we all know how quickly that can add up. And, screen printing posters is also very expensive, especially when you’re a smaller business. I’ve been looking for an alternative, cost effective way to print posters and I finally have a solution to share with you!

A few months ago, Luke Copping needed a poster for his speaking event and hired me to design a layout he could print through MagCloud. At The Blogcademy, we’ve been using MagCloud since the very beginning to print our workbooks but I didn’t realize they also did double-sided 18 x 24 posters! Luke was impressed with the quality so when it came time to test out some new Blogcademy designs, I knew just where to go.

The Blogcademy MagCloud Posters

For those of you who aren’t familiar with MagCloud, it’s an on-demand printing service run by HP and you can print as little or as much as you like. They ship around the world, too. Sometimes you don’t have the quantities needed to go through a traditional printer or you just need to proof a project to see how it’s looking. Having the option to order a single piece is so nice!

Late one night, Gala sent me a manifesto and along with that, I put together layouts of our two upcoming Blogcademy dates in Portland and Los Angeles. I expected the quality to be just okay for $2.00 a piece but was pleasantly surprised when the posters showed up. First off, each comes in its own protective plastic sleeve. Next, the paper is much heavier than poster paper — it’s more like a few steps down from card stock. And the finish is the equivalent of a satin. It’s got a very soft shine (which helps with durability) but it’s not a cheesy high gloss by any means.

The Blogcademy MagCloud Posters

If you don’t have an event to produce posters for, why not try the following:

• Make prints of your original photography. Create a collage on your wall or give out as gifts and promos.

• Posters of old school family photos would be really charming!

• Do a series of patterns you’ve created. Make your own mishmash of wallpaper!

• Print your artwork as posters to sell at conventions, shows or events.

Hopefully you’re inspired to get out and make some of your own posters. I had a blast doing this and hope to have some original designs for sale later in the year. If you make any of your own, stop by and leave me a link! And for reference, these are flats of the designs I sent to print:

* Finally, I want to note that this post was in no way sponsored by MagCloud. I just really like the service and hope it is of use to you as well.

Back To Basics

Back To Basics

I find that the more immersed I become in creating visual identities for clients, the more I navigate towards the familiar for myself. I used to be one of those people that wondered why fashion designers sent fantastical creations down the runway every season but would then step out for the finale and take a bow in a simple jeans and t-shirt ensemble. Surely they could wear their otherworldly creations as well?

But now, I think I get it. When you dive into a sea of other people’s worlds and try to bring them to life, it’s nice to strip things down to the familiar when it comes to yourself. When you have a clean slate, you can create anything. Inspiration awaits around every corner.

When I’m focused on multiple projects, I find myself feeling the most comfortable being surrounded by things that are black and white. I love color but when all I can think about are other people’s colors day and night, I like to keep it simple for myself. My love affair with all things black and white continues.

Latest & Greatest #14: New Zara Finds!

Latest and Greatest

New Zara Finds

I love all things avant garde but I also appreciate good quality basics. Because in a pinch, those are what I reach for most often. Even if I’m wearing a jacket with built-in hip panels, I’ve most likely paired it with sturdy wedges, a black t-shirt and a simple skirt or skinny jeans.

I was a little late to discover Zara in part because Portland doesn’t have a location and I relied on shopping in-person when I was in New York or ordering online (always difficult when you’re not super familiar with a brand’s fit). One of my first Zara pieces was over a year ago when Joey bought me a neon yellow sweater for my birthday which I wore literally a few times a week (and still wear all the time)!

Anyway, I feel like I’ve finally hit the holy grail of basics and I wanted to share. I placed an order a week ago for these boots and this shirt and they are both the bomb (can I say that without sounding very 90s?)

First of all, the wedge boots — they fit exactly to size, the quality is amazing and they are made in Spain (if I’m paying upwards of $200.00 for shoes, they better not be stamped Made In China). Let’s back up to abut five years ago — I’d spotted the perfect Jil Sander wedge boots with crepe soles on Ebay but they were WAY out my price range and I let them go. Well, that could only mean one thing. They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder and I am STILL obsessed and thinking about those damn boots! So when I spotted these babies on the Zara site at a fraction of the Jil Sander price, crepe wedge soles and all, I made my move.

New Zara Finds

Onto the shirt. I have tons of skirts, jackets and dresses but seemingly no shirts! When I shop, I want fun! Excitement! Intrigue! But let’s get real, shirts are kind of important. I like mine simple and type-covered and this one delivers.

All in all, Zara has really impressed me in delivering good quality basics and accessible prices. No, this post isn’t sponsored — I just want to make more of an effort to share what I love when I feel it’s worthwhile!

So tell me, Where is your go-to place for basics? Because I am definitely in need of more.

While I’d like to imagine wearing sequins and fancy dresses down the street every day, it’s just not my reality.

Hello, Yellow: Poppin For the Holidays!

Poppin Holiday Gift Set

Two weeks ago, I was waxing poetic about Poppin and their rad, brightly colored office accouterments. I’m a firm believer that a clean workspace translates to a less cluttered mind and was over the moon when Poppin reached out and let me pick out one of their holiday gift sets.

Poppin Holiday Gift Set

I was in need of some brightening up in my very black and white office so I chose the Pencils of Promise Pack which is named after the organization Poppin works with to build schools for children living in poverty. I love that they give back to educational institutions. There are lots of other brightly colored bundles to choose from as well.

As a native Portlander, I’m accustomed to the six months of overcast drizzle we’re in the midst of but at the same time, it does get old fast. Being surrounded by all these bright colored accessories is making me feel way better and I feel so grown up at 31 finally having a matching pencil cup, tape dispenser and stapler!

Poppin Holiday Gift Set

I always feel like I’m lacking in the basics — my favorite part of the bundle is the ruler. It’s thick, weighty and the numbers are massive. I can’t seem to draw a straight line to save my life so I see it getting a lot of use.
