Andy Warhol Postcard
Monday, August 11th, 2008
This weekend, as I was hanging out in the lobby of the Ace Hotel, a stack of oversized Andy Warhol postcards caught my attention. They were for a show of photos from the 60s, 70s and 80s New York underground at Portland’s Augen Gallery that runs through August 27th, 2008.
I’ve added in one of my favorite […]

New Hangtags: Made With Love
Thursday, May 15th, 2008My new double-sided hangtags just showed up (they’ll be hole-punched and attached to my new merch). Only made 100 of ‘em! As always, I ordered from Overnight Prints and besides being cheap and high quality, they’re super fast.

Portfolio Revision #4: Mark Twain Book Cover
Wednesday, May 14th, 2008I haven’t been posting my portfolio revisions lately because in all honesty, they haven’t changed enough to be noticable! So, for my last one, I wanted to do something dramatically different.
The original cover was fine, but a bit generic. I liked the typography and hierarchy of words, but it wasn’t anything groundbreaking. For the revision, I […]
Tools of the Trade: Lettering for Reproduction by David Gates
Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008
Yesterday, my copy of Lettering for Reproduction by David Gates showed up! Published in 1969, it covers everything you need to know about designing hand-lettered type (after all, this was the age before personal computers) and the content is based on Pratt Institute’s Dept. of Advertising Design and Visual Communication Lettering Course from that time.I […]
Portfolio Revision #3: Saint Cupcake
Tuesday, April 15th, 2008Disclaimer: Although it’s true that Portland’s Saint Cupcake produces the best cupcakes in the world, I am simply a faithful connoisseur of their products and I am not affiliated with them in any way!
This was originally a first year design project that required my class to choose a local company and develop a new logo and […]
Ask Nubby #1: The Best Typography Resources
Tuesday, April 15th, 2008Question:
What are your favorite sources for fonts? I’m a total font junkie who’s always on the hunt for new ones to add to my collection.
There are so many resources for typography these days! Should you pay or go the free route? Do the free sites offer the same quality?
Great for a quick project […]
Tools of the Trade: Jan V. White Books
Sunday, April 13th, 2008The author I credit with teaching me the most about design is Jan V. White. A former art director at Time-Life, he’s written more than a dozen books on visual techniques focused in publishing. The best part about his books are the sketchy images (no fancy, computer-generated pictures here)! Instead of huge, wordy paragraphs, […]
Mercy Corps Phoenix Fund 2008 Book Design
Monday, March 10th, 2008For the last month, I’ve been working on a 32-page book for the Mercy Corps Phoenix Fund 2008 Donor Trip. My graphic design teacher is friends with photographer Joni Kabana who recently went on a Phoenix Fund trip to India and Nepal.
Armed with her amazing photos and corresponding blog posts, we each set out to create […]

Finished Calendar Overview and Download
Tuesday, February 26th, 2008My first ever calendar is finished! It’s a super compact design and perfect for a desk. Each month is double-sided, but if you don’t have access to duplex printing, both sides can be printed as singles.
Click into the Downloads section and simply print each on a letter-sized sheet of paper and prop inside a CD case […]
New Business Cards (and Their Purpose)
Sunday, February 24th, 2008A confession: Hello, my name is Nubby and I’m a business card junkie.
While some people dislike business cards and have never owned one (I know some folks who think they’re tacky and unnecessary), I think these compact pieces of thick paper deserve more credit than they often get! In the digital age where thank you cards […]

The Symbolic Power of the Red Cross
Tuesday, February 19th, 2008
Notebook where I keep red cross-related clippings.
The symbolism of the red cross is powerful and plays a prominent role in my art and overall aesthetics. The red cross is simple and perfectly symmetrical. To me, the red cross can be considered to have (at least) three varying meanings:
1. The Red Cross / Medical Imagery:
I’ve always been […]
Calendar Update
Saturday, February 9th, 2008One of my school projects this semester has revolved around designing a calendar. There’s still some tweaking and changes that need to be made, but here’s a few of my favorite months so far:
The text was pre-assigned in big paragraphs, so I sampled smaller pieces for each month. The format will be double-sided for each month […]

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008
I’m in the middle of designing a calendar for a school project. Since this screenshot, I’ve narrowed down the ideas and have moved on to setting up tables in inDesign. Once it’s finished, I hope to get a downloadable version up! It will be the size of a CD case…
