What is Nubby: 2009 Media Kit
by Nubby, 07.08.09 at 3:27 pm :: permalink :: rss
I’ve just finished my 2009 media kit, What is Nubby and below is the final outcome. It’s been coming together over the last few months and though the layouts started out very simple, I later decided to add some more drama to a few of the pages. The pages that are packed with advertising details and frequently asked questions are deliberately kept clean so that the information can get across while their counterparts with stats and short sentences are more bold.

In this lagging economy, many designers and agencies are playing it safe. They want to hold onto what they have and to keep everyone satisfied. In contrast, I think that now is the time to stand apart from the competition. Now is the time to build a brand that is bold and unique, that dares to take a fresh approach. A media kit is a great way to inform potential clients and advertisers about what you have to offer as well as a chance to convey an artistic style that incites interest.
As I have previously mentioned, though a media kit isn’t for everyone and a resumé along with a peek at your portfolio will usually suffice, sometimes it’s fun to step outside of the box and to experiment with different formats.

You did a beautiful job. I’m sure you hear this enough but you really are very talented.

You do amazing work! If I ever find myself in need of a graphic designer I will certainly hire you. I love your style!

I always love the perspective you share, and this is such a great way to promote yourself and your business! It’s fresh and creative and displays incredible talent. Thanks a lot for sharing this.

Hi Nubby! Your media kit looks stunning. You’re a total inspiration.
I’m experimenting with layouts for my own media kit at the moment. I’m a writer, and we don’t really use media kits or portfolios, but I wanted to stand out. Half the fun of words is how they look on a page.

Hi Nubby….I’m not a graphic designer but I do love how you’ve so clearly and beautifully marketed yourself and your work. I wish you the best and I love your blog! :) lbelle

what especially made me fall in love with the kit was how you made a few of the pages have the text in the shape of a swiss cross. (obsession with nurses) xD
July 8th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
i really dig this media kit. ace job. also, i tend to agree with you, in this economy that’s kind of bad, the only thing you can do is prove you’re not like everyone else. heck yeah!
July 8th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
Fabulous! I love the work and thank you so much for sharing the process!
July 9th, 2009 at 1:38 am
gorgeous… but your text could do with a little work… for instance, on in the ‘Where can I view your quals’ section your website is rendered over two lines, and thus contains a rogue dash..! and some of your content phrasing is out of step with your frankly fabulous design… fix these and I’d hire you in a second

ah, that’s perfect for me. red and white and black and the contrast between clear shapes and a little bit more playfulness.

This is amazing Nubby, you have outdone yourself! I always find designing for myself really difficult but your style is so great and consistent without ever seeming too similar. Congratulations!
July 9th, 2009 at 4:12 am
That’s amazing. So clean & tidy, but not at all boring. I’m jealous! If I had the money, I’d totally pay you to make me one. Infact, I should really pull my finger out & read all your info on media kits & make my own!

I really admire your sense of design. I have a great sense of less is more, but always with a slight twist that keeps it interesting.
July 9th, 2009 at 5:58 am
Lol, I meant to say “You have a great sense”. Ha ha — -how funny that sounded.

I’m not aware if you even realize the power of your blog. You truly inspire people with your drive, and that must feel hella good. I religiously follow your blog, and would be very sad should you ever choose to give it a break. Thanks for being an inspiration and for kicking my ass into gear when you don’t even realize.
I love your sense of simplicity yet you still have this edge and craftiness. I find it very easy to relate to your work since our styles are similar (yet your work is much more polished).
Power to you Nubby!
Thanks everyone for the awesome feedback, it is appreciated!
lee: thanks for your honest input. With this being the first round, I looked over the media kit again this morning, changed some phrasing and got rid of the dreaded ‘rogue dash!’ What’s your opinion on the sans serif body text? Would you prefer a serif typeface instead? Anyone?
Aimee Marie: Go for it!
cmykinky: Thanks so much, that’s very nice of you to relay that message because we all have bad days and positive reinforcement does wonders!
July 9th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
i love this!! especially the typography i find really awesome! i do think that you’re totally the right type for a media kit, but i agree with you that it is not for everyone.
July 9th, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Looks totally fantastic! \^_^/
Thanks again for the media kit idea. I might use it on my really quirky hobby, but now all I need is the actual execution. I’m going to start working on it right now! Maybe at least on a full-blown FAQ sheet for potential clients.
Hooray for your passion!

It’s so important in a creative industry to be able to SHOW your creativity when marketing yourself whilst still getting your point across. You’ve done that perfectly
As a graphic designer by training and not so much commercial experience you really inspire me to get my butt back into it. Hubby and I run an IT business - I have the prefect opportunity to market that side of my work - I’ve just never taken advantage of it.
The mix between ‘busier’ and clean pages is totally spot on to draw in attention where it’s needed and still exhibit the fun side of your personality. The cross is pure genius.
Sans serif all the way. It’s will always be a point of difference between designers in my experience. I think it makes your message more clear/concise.
I hope this brings you lots of new work and will now definitely have Nubby Twiglet in mind for all design work (that I can do/simply do not have the skill to do myself!). <3

lee: I didn’t take your comments as rude but actually really appreciate the feedback! Sometimes I could use an extra set of eyes here and the details you pointed out helped me refine the design. So thank you!

Wow! This my first time visiting your site and I’m very impressed with your work, advice, etc. After taking the chance to leave my dead-end job (with no backup job), I decided to work on my freelance design business. It hasn’t been easy, but your site has definitely motivated me to keep pushin’ on!!
