April Showers Bring May Flowers: Marbled Dries Shoes

I am definitely feeling more optimistic than ever now that I’m walking around with the equivalent of psychedelic rainbows on my feet. When the Dries Van Noten Fall 2008 RTW collection came out, I was immediately drawn to the bright, slightly futuristic marbled patterns on some of the clothing. I saw some of the pieces in person twice, but they were woefully out of reach. And, the shoes didn’t appeal to me because they’d lost the chunkiness of seasons past.

Fast forward to last week when I was perusing the selection at Halo and realized that they had some pumps from that collection marked down to less than half price in my odd size (36.5) which is extremely hard to find. I slipped them on, took a few steps and they actually stayed on my feet. A miracle. And, the curvy pin-up girl shape suddenly made sense, balancing out the blindingly bright pattern.

When I originally saw the Fall 2008 collection, it had a strange familiarity. Back in 2006, I had made an art piece called Psychedelia with a similar bright mix of colors that later influenced the work I did for Virgin Records.

And, that’s partially why I make no differentiation between fashion, graphic design and fine art. They are all triggered in some manner by one another with influences that constantly circle back around. One inspiration leads to another and they form a path like little stepping stones to an even bigger vision. But, enough of the philosophical meanderings. All I know is that from now on, each one of my brightly colored steps will be filled with rainbows and smiles!
P.S. Jane of Sea of Shoes wears the marbled dress from the same collection here and you can get a much better idea of how intense the pattern really is!

Those are really pretty.

Those are absolutely beautiful! It makes sense that they’d be from the same collection as Jane’s dress — I was actually admiring her post this morning, thinking how much I loved that particular look. The pattern is just magnificent…
Also, you & Princess Poochie should talk shoe sizes. I think she has feet tinier than yours! You two must be masters at finding ways to make them fit.

I agree completely about the blurry line between fashion and art, they should in no way be seperated!

dude, I want to steal your shoe collection.

I swooned over the necklace made of bangles. Trying to decide if a DIY version would be cute or crazy.

nice one, nubs. i can imagine they will look fantastic with a good black outfit (and maybe a bright purse or scarf?).

I don’t think I’ve every seen your Psychedelia piece before, but it’s awesome! I love it. It’s my fav of yours, although it feels quite un-Nubby like!

i love your and gala’s cosmically connected shoe-blogging.
these are CUTE.
totally dig the fashion-is-art-is-fashion-is-graphic-design-is-art-is-fashion idea. wish more people would embrace it!
bri: That’s a nice thought. Brides always pick the most boring shoes.
Leigh: Probably a bit of both! Which is a pretty good combo, if you ask me.
lindsey clare: Yes, exactly what I’ve been wearing them with! Very simple black clothing with one burst of color, kind of like a big punctuation mark.
Aimee Marie: It’s so unlike my other work…it was a random one-off piece I made way before the others but after that much color and so many layers, I was ready to streamline.
Jeester: Aww, thank you for the sweet comment!
mollyburkett@gmail.com: I have no idea why we’re both on such a shoe kick right now, but it’s pretty funny. This blogging about shoes is getting ridiculous!

I love that peice of art Nubby! Were they paper images cut and pasted or did you do it on a computer somehow?
I used to do bright collage-y work in my GCSE art class and everyone just looked at me weird and made comments about us “not being at playschool” because I was cutting and sticking instead of painting some boring scene! (They were total arse-holes in that class though)
Ashleah: Thanks for the link. Those are so amazing but soooo expensive. Sadness!
cassie: Everything was cut and pasted to the surface. There’s a ton of layers in that piece! I probably wouldn’t make a piece like that now, but it was done 3 years ago while my style was still evolving and was a lot of fun to make. Art is about expressing yourself…I’ve never painted and some people think it’s funny to refer to my collaging as SCRAPBOOKING! Haha. Collage is just as awesome as painting (at least I think so).

They are amazing, i live in Australia so the £ vs. AU$ is completely ridiculous, so i will just put an image of them on my pinbaord above my desk instead
