Ask Nubby #4: M·A·C Eyeshadow

Question:
One thing I always wonder when I look at your photos is: What eyeshadow do you use?
Last week I was tackling freelance questions, this week it’s eyeshadow! I am a die-hard M·A·C (Makeup Art Cosmetics) fan. Not only do they have a cool logo, sleek and minimal packaging, a staff that wears head-to-toe black and a recycling program that is light years ahead of its time (by returning six M·A·C packaging containers to a M·A·C counter, you receive a free lipstick), but their eyeshadows are extremely pigmented and can easily last for years.

M·A·C was the first department store makeup I ever used. I was in the 7th grade when I purchased a neutral-colored lipstick and have been hooked ever since!
Though I have loads of fun eyeshadow colors, my schedule is way too busy to experiment very often. The three colors I use almost daily are:

1. Crystal Avalanche, which is a super frosty white and makes a foolproof base. I brush this over the entire eyelid.
2. Scene, which is charcoal-y but neutral enough for every day wear. I use this in the crease.
3. Black Tied is a sparky, smoky black and very glam. I add this to the outer corners if I’m going out and need a more dramatic look.
All of their eyeshadow colors can be viewed and purchased here.
I should mention that before applying any shadow, I pat Studio Finish Concealer around the entire eyelid area. It’s got a super creamy consistency and amazing staying power. I’m one of those people that do my makeup once for the entire day, no matter what I have planned and this keeps my eyeshadow smooth and crease-free.

One thing I’ve always been uncertain about with their recycling plan — which packaging containers? The packaging that actually contains the make-up (the plastic tins & tubes), or the cardboard that it is packaged in itself?
I’ve just gotten hooked on MAC myself, and I’m really liking what I’ve picked up! Their lip glass is fantastic.

Just a little word about MAC & their shady business practices: http://www.make-upboard.com/showthread.php?t=1741

Ashe: The plastics. Think along the line of eyeshadows, compacts, lipgloss, lipstick, mascara tubes, etc.
Melisser: WOW. I had no idea! I haven’t noticed a difference in the quality of any of the products I’ve purchased, but much of the eyeshadows I’ve had for more than three years. The Studiofix which I’ve been using for about 10 yrs. now also seems the same. Are there certain products that are distinctly different?
Also — is there another brand you’re recommend? I love NARS, but it’s more expensive than MAC.

I’ve been dying to try out MAC for awhile… the link Melisser posted is very interesting and makes me think twice. I do love their colors though, and the ad campaigns.
I have another cosmetics question for you!
how do you get your lipstick so incredibly red and perfect?? I used to use a neutral pencil to cover my entire lip before apply the lipstick, but that dries my skin out like nobody’s business.
so for awhile I abandoned red lipstick, but I do love wearing it too much… lol.

Hi Nubby,
I’ve been a long time fan of your ventures, designs, and writings. I still want to buy tees from your bro too. Well I’ve been wanting to know for some reason if you have any advice on good hairdye? and what is your favorite scent..that you couldn’t possibly live without?

Nubz, have you checked out Make Up For Ever? WAY more pigmented than MAC, great colors, better company ethics. I think you can find it at Sephora.
