Blacktooth

Five years ago, my brother Carey (a.k.a. Smokey) started a t-shirt line out of his bedroom. Blacktooth was originally designed for his final project in high school, but pretty soon our friends were buying the homemade cut and paste designs for $10.00 each. My dad had built a little shed in our back yard and Smokey would screenprint new designs every few months, the most memorable being nuns with guns! Each time he sold out of a design, he’d reinvest the money into more supplies and getting a new silkscreen burned. We modeled the shirts ourselves and I’d occasionally give him clippings from my fashion magazines to collage together.

Fast forward to today and Blacktooth is his main job. The line is sold at boutiques all over Oregon and California including The Wasteland in L.A. and this Spring, three designs will be available at a chain store worldwide! The success of Blacktooth can be attributed to a nonstop work ethic and his outgoing personality — this boy runs circles around me! We have different strengths (Him: designing, manufacturing connections and networking and Me: bookkeeping, packing orders and correspondence) and have decided to launch a new line this Fall. I’m super excited to finally work on a project that we’re both so passionate about! Until then, Blacktooth keeps releasing some of the best shirts out there…
