THE WEEK

It’s Friday, the sun is (finally) out and I’m excited for the little things — a haircut tomorrow (it’s been a year!), booking hotels for my Palm Springs trip and carving out some time to work on my portfolio.

This week flew buy and no matter how hard I tried to catch up on client work and blogging, the balance of work and life commitments kept falling flat. As John Lennon once famously sang, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” and you just have to roll with what comes your way.

I have a pile of inspiration waiting in folders to share with you, snippets of half-written posts…but I also know my limits. I know when to give myself a break, proclaim that good enough is good enough, turn off the lights and head out to a happy our to unwind and relax. There’s a sense of relief and clarity in knowing that a new week and a fresh start are ahead.

I’m signing off to catch up on what I can and I hope you have a relaxing, fun filled weekend!

P.S. These are some things I’m loving at the moment: the colorful vintage light selection at Lounge Lizard, my marble tray, my new tattoo patterned dress, the newly redesigned InStyle Magazine, Aesop hand cream, watches by The Horse and a simple rose gold collar I wear every day.

Latest & Greatest #35: Unique Planters and Vases

Latest & Greatest #35: Unique Planters and Vases

At this point, my office has basically turned into a mini jungle (imagine 2 large palms and about a dozen various succulents and cacti calling the place home). During the first year that I was growing my collection, I picked out planters that were simple, affordable and mostly white from IKEA.

While they’ve totally served the space well and match with everything, I’ve been itching for a bit more personality. I love the black and white minimalist vibe as much as the next designer but I’m craving texture. A little bit of shine. A dash of color. Unique shapes.

With Spring in the air, I’m looking for easy ways to change up my surroundings without breaking the bank and new planters can help with that. There are so many good ones out there right now and at the very least, it wouldn’t hurt to pick up a new vase for your fresh cut flowers.

Latest & Greatest #35: Unique Planters and Vases

My picks: mod metal planter (also shown above in my photo!), brass watering can, luciana (boob) vase, cylinder vase, cactus vase (ordering this soon!), raya vase, case study planter, i scream vase and gem facets planters.

What about you? What’s on your Spring wish list? Are there any places you swear by for finding great vases and planters?

THE WEEK

Last week, in the face of my grandpa’s health scare (thanks for all your sweet comments — he’s doing much better now!) I encouraged you to live your life fully on your terms with no regrets because you never know what tomorrow brings.

In that same vein, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how to produce content that matters, content that can directly inspire you guys to follow your dreams.

What I’ve realized along the way is that while we’re naturally drawn to what’s visually pleasing (photos, design, art) and producing this type of content might have a strong surface-level reaction with your audience, your personal stories are still everything. I shared a short and sweet story about how I got my start freelancing this week as a way to remind my audience that things don’t just magically happen — there’s always a story lurking beneath the surface. As the days rush by, it’s easy to forget about all those small moments that caused your life to become what it is today. Share them.

Over the last month, I’ve been at the office pulling longer days than usual because Joey, Rocky and I are heading down to Palm Springs to begin our house hunt in 2 weeks. There’s so much to get done before vacation but I’ve definitely squeezed in plenty of fun. Yesterday, Joey and I visited one of our favorite Portland stores, Lounge Lizard. It’s a mid-century modern paradise packed full of affordable furniture, housewares and lighting that will make your head spin. I was most amused by the array of odd knick-knacks though, like these twin poodles joined together by a chain. Walking out empty-handed was not an option — just wait till you see the statue I bought. Haha. Needs a little spray paint first. 😉

Processes, processes, processes. Who needs them?

Creative small businesses, that’s who.

When I started freelancing a decade ago, I was full of creativity but came up short on knowing how to manage client expectations and deliverables. Everything looked good from the outside but on the inside, my business was a mess. The turning point was when I launched Branch. I took the time to build out process documents that took potential clients from interested to signed with very little effort and since then, my business has grown massively.

Nothing changed about the work I produced but everything changed about the processes I used. It worked so well that I partnered with Paul Jarvis to create Project Prescription.

When it comes to running design studios, we’d like to share what we do, how we do it, and most importantly, why — as well as answer any questions you’ve got TODAY at 1pm PST.

You can watch us LIVE and ask us questions right here.

2010 Till Forevs: The Palm Springs Vow Renewal Part 02

Nubby Twiglet | The Palm Springs Vow Renewal

Spring has finally sprung but I’m not so secretly counting down the days until my Palm Springs vacation with Joey and Rocky in 3 weeks so it feels fitting to be posting the second part of our vow renewal shoot today.

Nubby Twiglet | The Palm Springs Vow Renewal

Back in October, Joey and I rented a house to celebrate our 5 year anniversary (and if you missed the first set along with the story behind the shoot, read that first).

This second look was less stressful to shoot because we knew the “wedding look” for our Rock n Roll Bride Magazine feature was out of the way. We could have stopped there and called it a day but when you have a few extra hours left with some super talented photographers and a change of clothes, you push on!

I already had the dress on-hand, a full-length halter style by Vince Camuto that I’d spotted on a mannequin in Nordstrom two years earlier. I’d only ever worn the dress on past trips to Palm Springs because it was on the formal side and the open back was ideal for warmer weather. I also wore my original wedding shoes from the first look so it required nothing new.

Joey kept the same look as before but just switched out his tie. A few weeks before the shoot, I began to get nervous that we’d never find a match to the neon chartreuse stripe on my dress because it was so specific. I googled away, just trying to find something, anything that would work. Finally, I came across Zazzle and they had the exact color for custom ties. Score!

For this set of photos, since we didn’t need anything specific, we took it easy and walked around the grounds of our rented house with Rocky, definitely wishing it was ours. Ha!

Lemon trees are still such a novelty to me. In Portland, we can grow meyer lemons but big, beautiful lemon trees like this just don’t happen. I felt like a citrus fruit goddess for a solid 5 minutes. 😉

As the morning turned into afternoon, I kept thinking about how glad I was that we’d invested in photos so we could look back on our 5 years together. Our time in Palm Springs flew by but thanks to the photos, our memories will last forever.

Issue 7 of Rock n Roll Bride Magazine is now on sale and features a 10 page layout of our vow renewals. One feature I especially love is the “Steal Their Style” section at the end of every wedding that pulls together the details so you can source similar items with very little effort. Kat totally nailed ours!

Thanks for virtually coming along and reliving our special day with us! xo
