The Week In Pictures: 9.4.15

Nubby Twiglet | The Week In Pictures

Hi, I hope you had a great week! It’s been nothing short of intense over here between launching Rock n Roll Bride Magazine, getting ready for my 5th anniversary party tomorrow and gearing up to fly out to San Francisco for Blogcademy next week. Never a dull moment!

This is one of my Summer haunts. I think it’s so, so important to support local businesses and spend a lot of time at the food carts in my neighborhood. There’s a back sun room with a bar (my pick is the cherry pomegranate cider!) and a box of Trivial Pursuit cards on every table. It’s the perfect place to put away your phone and chill out!

My office totally has an urban tropical vibe going on. This fashion editorial was in the newest Marie Claire and I LOVE it so much. Oh, and if you’re on the search for palm on a budget, mine was $15.00 at IKEA and with a little TLC, it’s gotten so big.

If I have a lunch meeting, Roman Candle is always my pick. I’ve raved about their pizza a million times but there are also great bakery treats, coffee (It’s owned by Stumptown), salads and sandwiches. It’s the first place I take friends who are visiting and every time, it’s a crowd pleaser.

This is my favorite corner of the office. I wanted to mention the resources since this setup wasn’t the same in my original office tour earlier in the year. The yellow table is actually the Stockholm nightstand from IKEA, the chairs are the The Bend Ethel (but crazily enough, my brother found them at a swap meet in Southern California for just $40.00 a piece!), the bench is by Safavieh and the print is by Debbie Carlos.

September always feels like a time of transition and change to me. Does it for you, too? I always equated it to back-to-school when I was younger but it was also around this time that I originally launched Nubby Twiglet, Blogcademy and Branch. I can feel so many shifts happening and you know what? Change is AWESOME. Getting a little shake-up here and there keeps you on your A-game. The projects I’m working on right now feel very challenging and in a way, I love that. It forces you to grow and evolve. If you’re in the same boat right now, try to look at the positives. Good things don’t happen when you’re stuck in a rut. Going bigger is scary but it’s also necessary to make the things happen that you’re dreaming about. #peptak

And with that, I’m signing off — gotta get our house ready for the party tomorrow! Have a great weekend, friends!

The New Look of Rock n Roll Bride Plus 6 Awesome Printing Resources

Nubby Twiglet | The New Look of Rock n Roll Bride

Today, my friend Kat’s alternative wedding publication, Rock n Roll Bride Magazine hits newsstands across the UK and if you’re located somewhere else in the world, you can order it here.

When your friends do awesome things, lift them up and celebrate their accomplishments! I know how hard Kat worked on this project because my design studio Branch spent most of the summer collaborating on both her new branding and magazine design. These are some peeks at the outcome!

I know that many of you are either branding new businesses or going through a rebrand yourself and with that comes the need for promotional materials. While Kat’s magazine was sent off to a professional printer, I use a lot of print on demand companies for projects and wanted to share some businesses I’ve had great results with to get you started.

1. Moo

Moo is by far my most-used printing resource. I’m constantly ordering business cards, stickers and flyers for clients and the Luxe line is especially awesome. The paper stock is extra thick and you can even get different colored edges on many of the products. While the quality of their offerings speak for themselves, what really elevates Moo above the rest is their fantastic customer service. I’ve had my share of customer misprints and they fix them every single time, free of charge. Pretty amazing.

2. Overnight Prints

When I need postcards fast, I rely on this company. Their prices are the best around and they can get you what you need very quickly. I’ve been a customer for 10 years now and while I don’t use them for more premium print jobs, they are a great solution for one-time events or when a generous print budget just isn’t an option.

3. Magcloud

I use Magcloud all the time. They are the best around for print on demand items like workbooks, look books and posters. Even better, they offer a bulk discount when you order 20 of the same item. I’ve ordered from them a few dozen times when we need Blogcademy workbooks and every single time, they’ve arrived on time and perfectly printed. Even better, they ship worldwide and provide immediate tracking numbers for peace of mind.

4. UPrinting

UPrinting is great when you have a specialty piece in mind. They can do tons of die-cut items including business cards and hangtags. I recently ordered square business cards through them for Branch and the quality is really good.

5. Blurb

If you’re self-publishing or doing a print-on-demand book, Blurb has beautiful pre-made templates and even better, hooks in directly with Amazon to help you get your book in front of an oniline audience quickly and easily. The quality of their printing is great and you can produce anything from trade paperbacks to coffee table books.

6. Artifact Uprising

This is a VSCO owned company so naturally the design of the site and examples of what they offer are top notch. If you’re interested in producing keepsake-worthy fine art prints and photo books, this is your place. I use them to produce square Instagram prints.

I hope these resources help you print your new collateral with style and ease!

Out & About #11: Darling Distraction

2015_nubbytwiglet_darlingdistraction_2

It’s official: my new favorite store in Portland is Darling Distraction. It’s a palm leaf wallpapered mecca of cool girl trinkets and I’m warning you now, it’s impossible to walk out empty-handed. I’d been stalking this shop for a few months on Instagram (thanks to a tip-off from my friend Kat!) and it was love at first sight.

Whether you’re in need of brightly patterned gift wrap, a card with just the right amount of kitsch or a vintage flamingo figurine (because everyone needs one of those, right?), this is your place. The shop owner, Katrina has a knack for picking out the most enticing goodies and hey, I love anyone who welcomes Rocky with open arms!

If your mouth is watering and your debit card is burning a hole in your pocket but you don’t live in Portland, the good news is that Darling Distraction has a tightly curated online shop as well. Here are some of my picks:

It’s cool to see so many new independent retailers popping up in Portland and I’m so glad that Darling Distraction has brought a big dose of fun to town!
