Cheers to 8 Years

Nubby Twiglet | Cheers to 8 Years

Time flies when you’re having fun!

In August of 2007, I left my Live Journal (the formative place where I’d discovered blogging in 2001) behind to start this blog.

Blogging to me had always been about sharing personal experiences and stories. It was a way to find my so-called tribe of like-minded people. It was never about making buckletloads of money or heavily pushing advertising — because when I started, those things didn’t even exist in the way they do today.

In a way, I think that was a major benefit. I had already been sharing stories online for six years before taking the leap to a more professional platform and that allowed me to keep on doing what I had been all along without any expectations of fame or fortune.

Blogging has shifted drastically over the last few years with social media platforms eating up more of our time, not to mention that of our readers. But I’ve always stuck around because blogging to me has something that is really powerful that most other platforms are missing — it allows you to share as much as you want and your posts can literally be anything you want them to be. I’ve always valued the boundless creativity blogging holds.

While blogging has changed, I still view it like this:

Social media is like a quick coffee date. You meet, introduce yourself and people get little snapshots of who you are. Blogging is like inviting someone into your living room. It’s where you go much deeper. It’s where those life-long friendships and client connections form. I can say that with certainty, too — most of my best friends to this day connected with me through this space. Clients I’ve had for 5+ years found me through this space. My whole world literally changed, thanks to this space.

And thanks to this space, I’ve had the chance to meet and connect with so many of you as I traveled with The Blogcademy. Your comments, tweets and emails mean the world to me. Thanks for sticking around through the good, the bad and the ugly (blogging wasn’t so picturesque in 2007, was it?!) A lot can happen in 8 years, that’s for sure.

One final thing — while this year has been about growing Branch, not to mention working on new personal projects, this space is in the midst of a very sleek and modern makeover and will re-launch by the end of 2015. Good things take time and I’m so excited to evolve this space, not to mention re-open an online shop of goodies.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Cheers to 8 years. I’m so glad to have you by my side. -Shauna

Happy 8th Anniversary to Nubby Twiglet! Your posts have always been so inspiring to me and continue to be. You just summed up exactly how overwhelmed I get trying to keep up with my blog and reading others, but it is worth it and that’s why I don’t quit. Thanks for saying it so perfectly as you always do!

Lilly, I am so glad we had the chance to meet 2 years ago — and I hope we have the chance to hang out again sometime soon! Blogging *is* hard work when social media these days feels so easy in comparison….but it’s so important to have a place that’s all yours to express yourself.

You were my favorite blogger in 2007 and you´re my favorite blogger today. I even use your design work as inspiration whenever I need to get out of a black hole (Im a graphic designer as well).

So thank you, thank you, thank you for all this time <3

    Best wishes!

Re-open an online shop?? What can we expect? :O

When you took picture of yourself and your fashion (especially a bit more adventurous with the Mickey ears), were you thinking about what potential clients might think? Or did you only want to work with people, who were cool about it?
It’s a bit scary to think about the image you get on the internet sometimes x.x

Anyway, I look forward to your make-over at the end of the year 😀

I had an online shop ages ago with stickers, tees, totes, screen printed posters and original artwork but the design of the shop itself was pretty out of date. Can’t wait to realunch it! :)

That’s a great question — and it can be tough. I never really worried about what potential clients might think but I also had outside jobs and freelance work at design studios when I started blogging. Now, I’m pretty open and dress and do what I want but it took quite a few years to feel confident enough to just be completely myself. I do think that the more open you are and the more you share, the more of the right kinds of clients will find you.

You know what’s funny, I was actually only thinking about a week ago that you should open a shop again. I remember way back when you sold the lip prints and stickers and some of your collage wood work. I never had the chance to buy things back then, but I totally would now!

Yes, the mouth with pill! It was my original logo back in the day! I loved having a shop but it just got too out of date with the design and functionality. There’s a stockpile of stickers, art and other fun stuff I’ve got ready to go in a few months down the line. Woohoo!

  5. Happy 8 years, Shauna!! A long time to be doing any one thing, but much longer to be doing something so deeply creative and personal as a blog. I love the voice you’ve honed and developed (visual + content) and look forward to the next 8 years.

Shauna, congratulations!! Out of all the blogs out there, yours is one I always come back to. Love the images, hearing what you’re up to, and all the design stuff is super fascinating, not to mention the writing is super personable! Cheers to many more years! <3 <3
