Give Yourself Permission

Nubby Twiglet | Give Yourself Permission

Give yourself permission to explore personal interests. Even if it’s just for 15 minutes a week, you deserve the chance to discover something new.

What do you love to do outside of work?

What makes you really happy?

Go do that.

Wait. Let’s back up for a second — I know that’s easier said than done. Pinterest and Instagram are full of inspirational messages, encouraging you to do what you love and to love what you do. But, what if you really don’t have any extra time? What if your life is so full that adding one more thing “just for fun” will make you topple over?

If you’re feeling frustrated because the one thing that you really want to explore keeps getting pushed to the back burner, I understand because I was in the same spot. Sitting behind a computer all day, every day made me want a creative release and I naturally gravitated towards piecing together still lifes (also sometimes known as flat lays). I loved the art of organization and grouping items by theme and color. It was a fun little exercise but technically, not part of my job.

When you work for yourself or freelance on the side, it’s hard to shut off. There’s always another client project and another side-hustle. Doing things “just for fun” starts to feel like a luxury. Or at least, that was my mindset. I soon fell into the trap of “there’s no time so I just won’t do it.” We all know that’s a self-fulfilling prophecy because there’s never going to be time unless you give yourself permission to carve it out.

Late last year, I finally gave myself permission and started a new project called Still Life Friday. Every Friday, I’d take 15 minutes to come up with a new composition and Instagram it. The progress was slow but steady. I created still lifes in my office on Friday nights before the sun went down. On cafe tables in Portland. On apartment balconies in Rome. On brightly tiled tables in Marrakech. On the floor of my spare room at home. Not every photo was perfectly lit, not every one a masterpiece. But instead of giving into perfection, I just kept going.

Now, we are halfway through the year and I have no intention of giving up. When I write out my weekly calendar, I automatically add “Still Life Friday” to my list. No excuses.

Today, I hope you’re reminded that having that one little thing you want to explore is okay and it doesn’t have to take over your life. Fitting it into your schedule in bite-sized pieces not only makes it more manageable but also more likely that you will follow through.

Want to join in the fun with me? Hashtag your still life compositions with #stilllifefriday so I can check them out!

Your turn: What hobby do you want to make time to try before the end of the year?

Oh, Italy. Where do I even start? My parents visited when I was young and had nothing but great things to say so in the back of my mind, it was always a place I wanted to visit. Even with just a week allocated between Rome and Florence, I got a good feel for the place and am already planning a multi-stop train voyage back next year.

Once I landed in Italy, the biggest draw for me was the passion for a full, vibrant life. The Italians have a level of sophistication and attention to detail that translates to everything they do including their food, cars, design, clothing, art and coffee. It was so nice to be in a place where small businesses were thriving, history was left intact and quality was paramount.

In America, we get caught up on the premises of things being bigger, faster-paced and cheaper and while none of those concepts are necessarily bad on their own, together they can chip away at the quality of life. In contrast, simple pleasures took precedent in Italy. We were content with our tiny apartment, eating handmade late night dinners, walking miles through markets and historical sites and just enjoying a slower-paced existence.

These are some of my favorite moments from Rome and Florence and I’ll be doing a more detailed travel post later on — enjoy!

Every time I passed this fountain, all I could visualize was the face of Mark Twain. 😉

The scale of the colosseum in person completely blew my mind. it is the largest amphitheatre ever built and dating from 72 AD, it’s hard to imagine how such a behemoth was even constructed.

Growing up in America, I knew very little about the British tradition surrounding afternoon tea. During a stay in London this month, I wanted to experience it firsthand so we set up a booking in the Sketch London tea room.

If you’re familiar with Sketch, it’s safe to assume that this wasn’t any ordinary tea room, though. Most of the surfaces were coated in soft, milky pink hues and it would be easy to imagine the ghost of Elizabeth Taylor lounging here if it weren’t for the oodles of hilarious David Shrigley art covering the walls.

Every room within the confines of Sketch are a unique experience in themselves and this area was no different. Waitresses in themed dresses brought over our menus which were filled with dozens of tea varieties. I chose vanilla which was rich, smooth but not too sweet. The china all featured David’s handwritten declarations of forget about it, ghosts and it’s not ok.

With tea service, multi-tiered trays are delivered full of mini pastries and sandwiches. Cakes, homemade strawberry marshmallows, fruit tarts, and caviar and quail egg sandwiches were all in the mix. Following the pastries, the traditional staples of fresh baked scones, clotted cream and jam arrived.

It’s safe to say that you won’t be able to finish everything. Sketch happily packed up the remainder of our tea service and we walked away with two massive pink bags of treats for later.

Though, that wasn’t the end of our adventure. The crowning moment of the Sketch experience resides at the top of a white spiral staircase with a bathroom area full of jumbo eggs. Inside each, you’ll find a toilet and piped-in music. As you head over to wash your hands, there’s a funhouse mirror distorting everything around you and a rainbow-paneled ceiling.

Sketch manages to put a fresh spin on the afternoon tea tradition and make it super fun — it’s worth experiencing at least once. And two weeks later, I’m still craving their delicious scones. 😉

The Week In Pictures: 6.22.15 | Marrakech

Nubby Twiglet | Marrakech, Morocco

Hello, how have you been?! I’ve been traveling across Morocco and Italy for the past two weeks and for a big chunk of that time, I’ve taken a major break from being online — it’s been so amazing spending my days wandering through unfamiliar cities, taking hundreds of photos, sitting at cafes, window shopping and having plenty of time to catch up with two of my best friends.

I spent last week in Marrakech and wanted to share some of the scenery with you. Marrakech is the fourth largest city in Morocco which is located in northwest Africa. Founded in 1062 AD, the layers of history are apparent around every corner.

We stayed at El Fenn, which is owned by Richard Branson’s sister, Vanessa. A knack for hospitality and a sense of humor runs in the family — her attention to art and even the smallest details made it the perfect retreat after encountering the hustle and bustle of the winding medinas.
