Forget About Complicated Affirmations. Can You Sum Up Your Focus For the New Year In One Word?

Create: 1. To cause to exist; bring into being. 2. To give rise to; produce. 3. To produce through artistic or imaginative effort.

Like many of you, I love the feeling of a fresh start that the new year holds. It’s the perfect time to file away what didn’t go so well while pushing forward with the promise of a clean slate. At the same time, I’m not a fan of big, blown-out plans and bucket lists. I like to keep it simple — the idea of having one word I can hold close feels refreshing because it’s much more manageable on a daily basis.

I did some soul searching a few weeks ago and my word for 2015 is create.

The goal: Remind myself daily to consume less and create more.

The backstory: It’s too easy to fall into the trap of consuming more and more content. On a daily basis, I find myself continuously checking Instagram feeds, stopping by blogs and scrolling through Pinterest and while these are fine in tiny doses, all that time I spend consuming adds up — it could instead be focused on creating.

When I think about feeling productive and satisfied, it really comes down to creating content that helps my clients and audience achieve their goals. In the new year, I’ll be making some shifts to create more which I’ll talk about in more detail soon.

For now, I want to hear: what is your word for the new year?

What an inspiring post and way to look at it! Mine is #FEARLESS – its easy to get stuck in sameness because it is familiar rather than jumping in to something new with two feet, not knowing what the future may hold.

    • Shauna says:

That’s a brave word to commit to. You’ve grown your blog so much this year, I’m excited to see how fearless translates to that side of things as well!

  2. Kelsey says:

I love that you’re using one word! I did this last year, and applied the word EDIT to everything that I did. I was a little overambitious though, and didn’t make as much stride as I hoped. Whops!

Good luck with CREATE. I could certainly do the very same thing…I don’t even want to know the hours I spend consuming, eee! What a great reminder :)

This year, I’m going to focus on something a little different: selfishness. I’ve spent this past year doing a lot of things for others, and I’ve forgotten to really take care of myself. I’m hoping that by being a little more selfish, I’ll be able to take better care of myself, and actually help out others from a better foundation.

    Happy new year!

    • Shauna says:

Good for you for putting yourself first. When you are running on all cylinders and feeling good, then you’re able to give more to others in return. Happy new year to you, as well — and I’ve told you this before but I LOVE your blog. :)

  3. This year my word is discover. Coming out of a long term relationship/engagement into singledom it’s about discovering myself, what makes me happy and trying new things. It’s my year to be totally selfish and put myself first and I can’t wait to try all the things I’ve been putting off for so long! x

    • Shauna says:

I like that! I felt the same exact way when I came out of a long-term relationship years ago…and that time alone rediscovering old friendships and exploring and traveling really made me more aware of who I was and what I wanted. It feels good to commit to yourself first for once!

  4. allison_bt says:

Such a great idea! I too have been bogged down with trying to keep up on social media and find that the word I need to focus on next year is, appropriately, ‘focus’. I have such big ideas and plans and the only way I will realize them is to really focus my attention, time, and hard work.

    • Shauna says:

Ha, I’m right there with you! FOCUS! I have a huge list of big projects taped up net to my desk….that I haven’t even scratched the surface on. We’re in this together for the new year! 😉

  5. Kiri says:

    Calm.

I stress and I get anxious about things, and then I get easily frustrated and annoyed which is damaging, maybe ruining my relationship with my boyfriend and makes having a career in project management tricky.

So I need calm, I need to learn to breathe and think things through before I say/do things. I need to find a middle ground that works.

I want it to be a calm like the sea on a sunny day so that the depths of my emotions are still there, and I’ll still have my storms but since I live by the sea I can go and watch the waves on those days and find my calm there.

My word for 2015 is Be. As in, Don’t Dream It, Be It.
May I ask what that glorious lipstick you are wearing is, please?

  7. Stine says:

Oh, how nicely put “create more, consume less”. I like that.
My word for the year is, without much soul searching, “ENJOY”. I’m often so concentrated on what went wrong, what could go wrong, what I need to do, what others do better than I, what others might think…instead of just enjoying the moment as it is. ENJOY is such a present (in terms of time) word.
Thank for inspiring me to think about this!

    • Shauna says:

I like that. We can all be too hard on ourselves. It’s so easy to get hung up on who’s doing what but in reality, it just takes a lot of effort to become great at anything. And life is too short to hold ourselves back. Go forth…and ENJOY! 😉

  8. Tara says:

Oh! I love your description of create, and I think it’s a great goal for the new year. I think my word for the year will be explore. I’m very much a stay-at-home type of person and I really want to explore Portland more than I do; go out on the weekends and take more walks/bike rides. I also want to explore the ways I can expand my business!

    • Shauna says:

Explore is such a fun one! I am the same as you….I tend to stay at home a lot when I’m in Portland. I’ve been looking through local Instagram accounts and making a list of all the cool new coffee shops, restaurants and independent stores I want to get out and see in the new year. There’s so much amazing stuff happening — if you discover anything awesome during your explorations, let me know!

  9. Kate says:

I kind of want to go for create (create more, consume less is totally what I’m going to try and do next year!) but as you’ve already taken that I’m going to go for #believe, as 2015 is the year where I’m really going to try my best to believe in myself, believe in what I can do and what I need to learn/achieve to get to where I want to be!

    • Shauna says:

Believe! That’s a big one! Because if you believe in yourself, follow your strengths and put in the effort….you can do anything. I’m excited to see how that unfolds for you!

  10. Alex says:

This is a great idea. My word for 2015 will be ‘move’. I feel like I’m not going anywhere, literally and figuratively. I have ideas I need to put into motion. And I just realized it can all help me literally move into a new place before the end of the year. Thanks again for the inspiration.

    • Shauna says:

Move is such a good base to begin with — and from there, you can build and build and build….to do anything you want. Those basic building blocks are fundamental to accomplish great things. I know you can do it!

  11. Dani says:

    mine is explore.

    new places, ideas, paths, opportunities.

but recently I decided to add one more word: kindness.
I need to be more kind to myself and forgive my own mistakes and accept myself more.
perhaps that’s part of exploring my own soul? i’d like to think so. :)

  12. Taylor H says:

YES! I can spend HOURS looking at social media feeds, reading blogs and articles, listening to podcasts, etc. that I often forgot my purpose for getting on the computer: to write.

    Work in progress.

But next year, my word will be “BRAVE” as I am embarking on a cross-country move in January.

  13. Love this idea. My word for 2015 will be: Organize. After a few years trying to figure out the right business for me, I’ve finally found a couple that stands out the most. Now it’s time for me to organize my businesses, be more organized about money and projects, and to get my life organized in general.

    • Shauna says:

Organization is a big one! I’ve been working on that for most of this year and am already noticing a difference. For me, the struggle has always been the administrative stuff like managing payment installments and keeping my financial books organized so I finally hired my mom to do it! Haha. Good luck — less clutter equals a clearer mind equals more productivity!

  14. Wah, I love all the word suggestions so far!
I think mine would be LIVE, because I want to do and be so many things and it sums up to simply live my life more, to do something fullfilling with the time I am given on earth.

  15. Amber says:

I love this idea. My word is going to be ‘Present’ as in ‘Be Present’. Often in situations I find myself thinking of the next step, the next words, the next whatever instead of just being present and enjoying the moment.

    • Shauna says:

I have the same issue. Trying to just be in the moment and be okay with that is a hard one…I’ve started putting my camera and phone away during meals and not pulling my laptop out when I get home from the office to keep my mind from drifting. Good luck!

  16. Brittanie says:

This is such an awesome idea! I’m a control freak and get so caught up in planning my year that I don’t end up doing much, so a single word is really helpful to keep it simple. Mine is going to be “learn”. Learn about myself, the world, and others. I’m also starting college so it’s a pretty appropriate word :p

  17. Kat says:

I think if I had to put a word down for this past year, it would be “SURVIVE.” Things have been really tough, and my health has really gotten in the way of pretty much every part of my life. I haven’t been able to work, and it’s gotten massively in the way of university, friendships, and even blogging.

This coming year I want that word to be “THRIVE.” I really want to make the extra effort to sort out my health, and get to a point where I’m not just constantly coping with the next issue.

Thanks for this post! It’s a good way to flesh out goals.

  18. Paige says:

There are so many projects I want to get started on this year that while I’m super temped to follow suit and draw inspiration from the wors Create. I think i’m leaning towards “Beleive” :) self doubt seems to keep me away from doing a lot of the things I really want to try!

Best wishes! I loved this post btw :)
