My Game Changing, All-In-One Camera: The Sony NEX-5N

Nubby Twiglet | My Game Changing, All-In-One Camera: The Sony NEX-5N

Though I’m a long ways from being a professional photographer, I do take a lot of photos and I’m notoriously picky when it comes to cameras.

Because of this, I held onto my trusty Nikon D40 for close to five years because I couldn’t find anything I liked better. Then, I discovered the Sony NEX-5N and it was love at first snap. For the last four months, nearly every photo featured on this blog was taken with the Sony. It does everything I need and it’s super duper compact — I carry it in my purse everywhere, every single day with absolutely no chance of back pain creeping up.

Here’s a quick list of pros on why this camera rules:

• It has the performance level of a legit DSLR but is about half the size and weight.

• Unlike a lot of smaller cameras on the market, this one has interchangeable lenses.

• The photos are 16.1 megapixels! Damnnnn. Even when you zoom in and crop, they still look sharp.

• It can record full HD video. Remember the Canada video? It was all shot on this camera by Gala, who owns the same exact model.

• There’s also a tiltable 3 inch LCD screen attached to the back — this makes it possible to frame light and low angle shots that would otherwise be tricky to nail.

Honestly, there are just too many incredible features to cover here. Scroll down and check out this list
to see even more of what this camera has to offer. Even though I’ve had this camera for a few months, I held out and waited to review it to see how I liked it after using on a near daily basis and I’d still give it a thumbs up.

Bottom line: If you’re looking for a solid camera for everyday shooting with DSLR quality in a compact, travel friendly body, I think you’ll love this camera as much as I do.

  1. Thank you for this! I just went to Hawaii and was lugging around my big old EOS 10D everywhere and decided I needed to find something more compact that had the same punch. Here it is! And the price is super right!

Caroline Royce: That’s a lot of weight to lug around when you’re just trying to have a good time! Sounds like this camera would be a great fit for you.

I have been in the market for a new camera for a while too & I am really happy to read your recommendation! However, I can’t say I agree with the above comment about the price being right – nearly $600.00 is a great deal of money to me. :/

Thanks to you and Gala for sharing this info @ the Blogcademy as well. I just bought the Sony NEX 5T a week ago and I am in LOVE. the quality is amazing and the size and weight makes it so practical that I keep my camera with me at all times now where, before, I really had to think about wether I wanted to carry my heavy cannon dslr around. I still love my cannon, but the Sony Nex takes photos of amazing quality and with 1/2 the drama. This camera is a MUST for bloggers and photographers who like conveniece & good photos.

ayanna: Aww, that is so awesome to hear! I am so glad you’re enjoying it. I’ve been carrying mine through Europe for the last week and it’s been so much better at capturing special moments in detail versus reaching for my iPhone 5. This is one of the first trips where I haven’t had to carry a DSLR around and it’s made such a difference weight-wise. And honestly? The photo quality on this camera is better than my sorta old DSLR, anyway.

I think this is on my wish list now. I’ve had my nikon d60 for about 5 years now. I used to take a lot of photos and loved the camera. Ok, I still love my Nikon. However now that I take less photos and it’s so easy to just grab my iPhone I’ve been neglecting my actual Nikon, mostly because it’s too big and heavy. I don’t feel like taking it along, which is such a shame. iPhone photos are decent but really don’t compare to a camera once you upload them. This little Sony looks awesome and seems to be just what I need.
