The Packing Dilemma Plus a Giveaway: Win Trask Shoes!

Nubby Twiglet | The Packing Dilemma

Last year, I was on upwards of 20 separate flights. And with all that traveling, I had to learn how to pack properly.

When I first started traveling on my own in my early 20s, I’d make terrible packing decisions. I threw everything but the kitchen sink into my big red suitcase, trying to make sure I was prepared for any situation. But inevitably, I’d get to the end of my trip and realize I hadn’t worn even half of what I’d packed. My biggest sin of all became increasingly obvious with the shoes I’d drag along. Boots, wedges and heels easily took up half of my suitcase.

While I made the effort to set my ridiculous variety of shoes out and did occasionally slip them on for a few hours during a shoot or party, the rest of the time they just sat in hotel rooms, sad and unworn. I was making packing decisions that put form over function and I wasn’t doing myself (or the taxi drivers hoisting my suitcase out of their trunks) any favors.

This year, I finally got my shoe game sorted. Throughout the first few months of 2014, I packed a pair of black boots and a pair of black sneaker wedges through the winter and spring. That was easy enough but I’ve still been stumped about what to do for the summer months as a three week trip to Europe quickly approaches.

Enter Trask. As some of you may know, in a past life I worked at comfort shoe stores. And occasionally, this brand would pop up in conversations. I wasn’t super familiar with it since Trask had been shuttered years before but my customers consistently raved about the quality. So when Trask recently popped back up in the shoe landscape with a brand new women’s line and reached out, I was game.

I want to be stylish yet comfortable as I travel through London, Berlin and Amsterdam soon and not worry about tripping over cobblestones! The answer? Piper ballet flats. They’re lightweight, comfortable and sturdy which is my holy grail when it comes to picking out new shoes.

Along with the Pipers, I’ve rounded up some of my other travel must-haves:

1. Unique Basics. I usually stick to a palette of mostly black and white clothing so everything mixes and matches. To keep it fresh, I add in a few fun prints like this Carrie Hammer newsprint skirt. 2. Comfy shoes. Sightseeing sucks when your feet hurt! I plan on sticking to comfortable, basic ballet flats like the Piper. 3. Pencil or pen. Gotta be prepared for that next brain wave! 4. Magazines. I always have an unread stack in my office and the plane is the perfect time to get caught up. 5. Fun Jewelry. Because I pack mostly black and white clothing, I add in a few fun necklaces to liven up my looks. 6. Passport. Enough said! 7. Book. I fly through the 2 or 3 magazines I pack at warp speed but carrying more than that isn’t an option. A good paperback book lasts longer and doesn’t add much weight. 8. iPad. It’s perfect for movies on the plane and music playlists in my Air bnb pads. 9. Colorful Lipstick. I only pack the basics when it comes to makeup since cosmetics get heavy really fast. To keep things fun, I pack a few coral and orange-toned lipsticks. 10. Favorite Perfume. I finally found a signature scent! I roll it up in a sweater inside my luggage to keep it from shattering. 11. Hand Lotion. The soap in all those airport and restaurant bathrooms sucks out all the moisture. I love Grown Organics Vanilla & Orange Peel lotion. 12. Notebook. I like to make handwritten notes and lists on the go. 13. Light layers. Because the weather can change so dramatically, it’s important to layer up. I usually wear a black tank and then layer something fun like this sequin polkadot top, add a cardigan over that and then finish it off with a lightweight leather jacket.

I love to travel but my summer dream usually involves a 1920’s cabin in the Montana woods… so most likely for the occasional trip into town and the mandatory roadside cafe breakfast.

  2. Medusa says:

It doesn’t sound like the most likely place to wear these shoes, but my dream vacation is to visit Antarctica. I want to see penguins in the wild! So I’d be wearing these comfortable shoes on the airplane down to South America & then on board the ship (preferably run by Quark Expeditions) down to Antarctica & if I’m lucky, South Georgia Island, where there are loads of penguin rookeries!

  3. April Crisafulli says:

My dream would be to go to Cocoa Beach FL again! My husband and I went there when we were dating and I would love to take my teenagers.

  4. maria says:

I would wear them to Paris. I’ve always wanted to go there.
I always think of the line in the movie Sabrina (the original) when her father tells her that the reason he took her is because every woman should be taken to Paris by a man that loves her.

Then I’d head over to Australia :)

  5. Cindy A. says:

My dream vacation would be a trip to France! Thank you so much for offering such a lovely and generous giveaway.

  6. Brittanny says:

My dream vacation would be to go to Columbus, Ohio and spend time with a friend I haven’t seen in a very long time. It may not be the most glamorous place but it will be a lot of fun.

  7. sheila says:

My dream vacation to rock the Trask’s Piper ballet flats in black would be Monaco to see the Grand Prix de Monaco! My husband is a European car-race enthusiast and we say we would love to travel the south of France to some day watch in person. Or a jaunt to see the Cannes Film Festival. Anything in the south of France, for a summer, would be my epic dream vacation, traveling with my husband and 4 year old son (who is always on the go). Parfait!

  8. Mahdi Martin says:

My dream vacation to wear these flats on would be to the island of Okinawa, the land of my ancestors! There would be a lot of trekking involved because I’d want to see everything, and I’d want to stay looking stylish while wearing sensible shoes!

  9. Sharon Howard says:

I would wear these comfortable looking flats to Hawaii, it was the dream vacation of mine and my late husbands to go to Hawaii but he lost his 12 year battle to cancer 18 months ago and we never made it.

  10. Ashley says:

My dream vacation to wear these would be a walking tour of Montreal and Vancouver Canada. Have been meaning to visit friends up North for months!

  11. My dream vacation lately has been to travel to Naples, Italy to take in some soccer games! Of course, I’d also take in all the sights and delicious yums of half my ethnicity I know hardly anything about!

  12. Ayanna says:

I have been so excited about my upcoming trip to NYC this July! (one of my dream vacays) I haven’t been to NYC since my kids were born 9 years ago. I’m heading back to do research for my handbag line, and these babies would allow me to walk the streets of NYC all day and remain stylish!

  13. Cléo says:

These flats would actually perfectly fit my next dream vacation, which is a Tokyo / Kyoto combo… Between some serious temple-and-palace grounds walks, market explorations, and cool bars and restaurants, I need some versatile shoes!
(and I should note that I adore the texture on these… Very cool detail!)

  14. Valerie says:

This post comes at the best time, as I’ll soon be packing my small suitcase for a week in Vegas with my better half. :) Thanks for the tips! :)

Where would I wear Trask Piper ballet flats? I’d love to give NYC a redo. My wife came down with a bad case of pneumonia days before we left for our week in NYC, so our daily adventures were cut quite short. These seem like the perfect pair of kicks for a week exploring the boroughs.

  15. Mary Patton says:

My first solo vacation! These are begging to be animated by my little size six feetsies as I go back to Skopelos, Greece to visit old friends at the SkopArt art foundation. I can feel them as I dance native Greek dances, clamber up mountains, and dine on Mezzes while sipping Retsina!

  16. without a doubt guatemala! I love going there to sightsee and visit my grandmother, and boy! it’s a trek walkin around there! these would be too stylish and cooL! love ’em!

  17. kC says:

My dream vacation destination would be Japan. I’ve been dreaming of visiting Japan for many years, one of these days I will make that dream a reality. :)

  18. Lindsay Jo says:

Oh gosh, I would love to take those flats to London and/or Ireland! I have such a desire to travel to Europe. I just got my passport for my honeymoon cruise and I am in love with the possibilities. I graduate school this Christmas and my goal was always to travel to Europe as my celebration. Maybe I will make it go right!

I’m also super stoked because as a lady of big feet (size 11), it’s really hard to find comfy shoes that don’t look to elderly.

  19. Jenn says:

I’d love to explore Germany in the Piper – i’ve always wanted to drive on the Autobahn and these would totally be perfect for exploring by foot and driving!

  20. Melissa says:

I’d love to visit Scotland during the summer and see my family and their heritage for the first time. Then I’d go down to London and over to Amsterdam to check out their culture.

  21. ashley says:

Anywhere! These shoes look like they’d be perfect to take from day to night on a dream vacation to Venice.

  22. Karen says:

I would wear them on a trip to the Greek Isles. These shoes would be perfect to walk around the quaint streets of Hydra (motorized transport is forbidden on the island) and the maze of streets on the island of Santorini. OPA!

  23. Adrien says:

I’ve always wanted to go to Japan more than anywhere else in the world. But my ideal journey there is to see the whole country, not just a few select cities. So my slightly-bananas-idea is to travel, from top to bottom, by scooter. (Not sure if it’s entirely possible, but either way, I’d love to have a pair of perfect all-purpose flats to scoot in.)

  24. LONDON! I’ve traveled extensively for a 24 year old and never been to London, these flats would be perfect!

Miss you Nubby! Can’t believe it’s almost been a year since the Blogcademy got after mpls, jump on a flight quick with your super packing skills, it’s PRIDE weekend and I remember how great of a time you had last year.

  25. gracie says:

I don’t want to enter coz I wouldn’t want to wear lamb or calfskin (but I admit plastic shoes are hell, so be it) but I have to say Nubby you should totally get some flat brogues! I could see them being gorgeous on you with your style. Maybe pointed toe ones. Find them cooler than ballet flats. OK bye!
