The Packing Dilemma Plus a Giveaway: Win Trask Shoes!

Nubby Twiglet | The Packing Dilemma

Last year, I was on upwards of 20 separate flights. And with all that traveling, I had to learn how to pack properly.

When I first started traveling on my own in my early 20s, I’d make terrible packing decisions. I threw everything but the kitchen sink into my big red suitcase, trying to make sure I was prepared for any situation. But inevitably, I’d get to the end of my trip and realize I hadn’t worn even half of what I’d packed. My biggest sin of all became increasingly obvious with the shoes I’d drag along. Boots, wedges and heels easily took up half of my suitcase.

While I made the effort to set my ridiculous variety of shoes out and did occasionally slip them on for a few hours during a shoot or party, the rest of the time they just sat in hotel rooms, sad and unworn. I was making packing decisions that put form over function and I wasn’t doing myself (or the taxi drivers hoisting my suitcase out of their trunks) any favors.

This year, I finally got my shoe game sorted. Throughout the first few months of 2014, I packed a pair of black boots and a pair of black sneaker wedges through the winter and spring. That was easy enough but I’ve still been stumped about what to do for the summer months as a three week trip to Europe quickly approaches.

Enter Trask. As some of you may know, in a past life I worked at comfort shoe stores. And occasionally, this brand would pop up in conversations. I wasn’t super familiar with it since Trask had been shuttered years before but my customers consistently raved about the quality. So when Trask recently popped back up in the shoe landscape with a brand new women’s line and reached out, I was game.

I want to be stylish yet comfortable as I travel through London, Berlin and Amsterdam soon and not worry about tripping over cobblestones! The answer? Piper ballet flats. They’re lightweight, comfortable and sturdy which is my holy grail when it comes to picking out new shoes.

Along with the Pipers, I’ve rounded up some of my other travel must-haves:

1. Unique Basics. I usually stick to a palette of mostly black and white clothing so everything mixes and matches. To keep it fresh, I add in a few fun prints like this Carrie Hammer newsprint skirt. 2. Comfy shoes. Sightseeing sucks when your feet hurt! I plan on sticking to comfortable, basic ballet flats like the Piper. 3. Pencil or pen. Gotta be prepared for that next brain wave! 4. Magazines. I always have an unread stack in my office and the plane is the perfect time to get caught up. 5. Fun Jewelry. Because I pack mostly black and white clothing, I add in a few fun necklaces to liven up my looks. 6. Passport. Enough said! 7. Book. I fly through the 2 or 3 magazines I pack at warp speed but carrying more than that isn’t an option. A good paperback book lasts longer and doesn’t add much weight. 8. iPad. It’s perfect for movies on the plane and music playlists in my Air bnb pads. 9. Colorful Lipstick. I only pack the basics when it comes to makeup since cosmetics get heavy really fast. To keep things fun, I pack a few coral and orange-toned lipsticks. 10. Favorite Perfume. I finally found a signature scent! I roll it up in a sweater inside my luggage to keep it from shattering. 11. Hand Lotion. The soap in all those airport and restaurant bathrooms sucks out all the moisture. I love Grown Organics Vanilla & Orange Peel lotion. 12. Notebook. I like to make handwritten notes and lists on the go. 13. Light layers. Because the weather can change so dramatically, it’s important to layer up. I usually wear a black tank and then layer something fun like this sequin polkadot top, add a cardigan over that and then finish it off with a lightweight leather jacket.

My husband and I have started an “Amsterdam Jar” in which we collect all of our silver at the end of the day. Because, as you might have guessed, we will be going to Amsterdam soon! These shoes look so perfect for that and I would wear them all over. Plus, they look like great airplane shoes that also double for date night! 😉

  2. Emma Funk says:

I’d wear these flats every single day as I wandered through Prague, Budapest and Zagreb running my fingers over centuries-old architecture, taking black and white photographs and tasting the local cuisines!

  3. Hannah says:

These are so cute! And great advice about packing. Over the past couple years I’ve been flying multiple times a year to visit my family across the country, and I’ve gotten my packing down to one carry-on suitcase. I definitely think the key is limiting the palette of the clothes you bring, so you can mix and match multiple outfits out of a few pieces.

My dream vacation would be to go back to London, where I spent three months studying abroad and completely fell in love with the city. I haven’t been back since, and now five years have gone by and I’m still dreaming about my time there. From there I’d also like to visit Italy and Ireland, my two ancestral countries.

  4. Katie says:

Comfy shoes are a must when traveling—I have learned the hard way.

Dream vacation would be to visit the city I’ve never had a chance to go to yet, but always dreamed of…London! And lots of walking to be had there!

  5. Emil says:

Mmm….I’d live to take those back to Rome… Wander the corso and all the old haunts… Finally walk the catacombs…and then on a new adventure to Istanbul.!

  6. Ashley says:

I absolutely love those shoes! I would love to wear them on a trip to New York City. I’ve never been there, but I know I would need a pair of really good walking shoes and those Pipers would be perfect!

I haven’t been farther than Canada and Mexico, but I’d definitely love to have those flats when I decide that the fiance and I need to go on a wander tour. I can definitely see myself walking through a town in the middle of nowhere with these shoes…and if I so happen to go into a town that has Jason Vorhees in it, then at least I know that I can run in them as well…and most likely beat the fiance to the car because he can barely run in his boots…lol

  8. tricia says:

My five year wedding anniversary is coming up next year and I would love to travel in Europe and tour using the eurorail pass. Hopping from city to city and just experiencing an amazing array of cultures and sights, ahh, one can dream!! love the shoes!!

  9. Anastasia Harvard says:

Sturdy, lightweight, AND comfy? Yes, please! I would wear these on a trip to Switzerland, which has been my ultimate dream vacation for what seems like an eternity!

  10. Alex says:

Yeah, I try to pack lightly too after realizing that I never use half of what I used to pack. With these flats, I’d definitely wear them to Japan. A lot of places I would live to visit are better seen on foot – temples, the Geisha district of Gion, and the Harajuku district!

Those shoes look great! Due to nerve damage in my knee sustained in a car wreck back in 2010, I can’t wear heels anymore. I’m always seeking cute and comfortable flats!

Those shoes would be great for running around Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan with my toddler son. That was my favorite childhood destination, and I can’t wait for him to experience it.

  14. Amy says:

Those shoes look amazingly comfortable! My dream vacation is Paris. I minored in French and I’ve been to Europe three times, but I’ve never made it to Paris.

  15. Emily Bowman says:

I would definitely wear these strolling along the cobblestone streets of a small Irish village. But since that is unlikely to happen anytime soon, it will probably be Chicago in the summer time :)

  16. Stephanie says:

Those shoes are fantastic! I’ve been dreaming about going to Sweden for midsummer festivities. Obviously not happening this year, but maybe 2015…

I wish this was open to Canada readers too!! I’ve pretty much given up on flats because I can never find a pair that is actually comfortable. These do however look promising…

    Egypt- someday.

In the meantime- dream vacation is Morocco.

I live in comfy shoes when I travel (will admit to wearing Keen sandals. Sometimes with socks)

  21. Heather says:

My husband and I are going on a second honeymoon for our 1st year anniversary to Scotland and Ireland (last year we went to Portland!!) and I would wear these out and about in Edinburgh and Dublin, so I don’t have to pack heels that I know I’ll break on cobblestones!

    Dream vacation, commence!

  22. Martina W. says:

A trip to Paris and Rome would be wonderful! Just me and maybe a few friends seeing all the sites and eating authentic food, that would be a blast!
