In The Mood #1: Citrus & Sunshine!

In The Mood

I’ve been thinking of new columns to add to the blog, especially after writing the first Blog Log article last week about developing features. Columns come and go and mine are often inspired by other bloggers.

When I spotted fellow designer Emma Robertson’s new column, Moody which revolves around real life mood boards she creates, I had a lightbulb moment. One of the best times I had last year was making mood boards for this DIY project.

In The Mood

As much as I love Pinterest and appreciate the way it helps me organize client projects, I still find great solace in magazines. No matter how big the stacks of unread magazines get in my office, I won’t give up my subscriptions. For me, it’s important to keep a connection with the tactile and collect visual research in different ways, including flipping through those pages.

In The Mood

In this new column, I’ll be putting together real life mood boards around a theme. Right now, warm citrus hues are on my mind (obviously the Portland doom and gloom is getting to me!) Interestingly enough, these colors took center stage last year in a Latest & Greatest column. Some things never change!

In The Mood

I’m having a great time pulling together “real life” inspiration and am already plotting out the second installment of this series! Have you came up with any new columns lately?

Gala: Yes! I keep everything in piles in my flat files. I always save all of my magazine tears because I know I’ll keep coming back to them years later for inspiration.

  1. What are some of your favorite non-mainstream magazine subscriptions? I am looking for some reliable interesting magazine subscriptions at the moment. I currently get Elle, Real Simple, and Better Homes. I would like to diversify!! Also, I have the same question as Gala, What do you do with the mood boards when you are done?

    • Shauna says:

Jessica Bramlett: Even though W is “mainstream” I love the size of it and the fashion layouts are always top notch. I also love V, Computer Arts, Interview, Monster Children, Marie Claire….and then I pick up a lot of others less often at the newsstand!

I love this one! So warm, much needed. I also love the tactile experience and often feel a desperate need to get away form the screen.

Like Jessica I’d love to hear what other magazines you receive. I remember you posting about Rika magazine which I fell in love with right away, however it doesn’t seem to be available online at the moment, or anywhere in stores near Vancouver.

Originally a print designer I am always up for supporting the industry!

Renée Yoxon: That is great that you’re developing new features! It always gives those loyal readers something to look forward to. I go through stages where I will go a solid year without introducing anything new and then suddenly, two fresh ideas come to mind.

I’m really looking forward to this! It reminds me of the notebooks you shared before. I’m really missing these, I always found them to be very inspiring. But this should be a great substitute.

melina: Not at all, go for it! I mentioned that Emma’s series is what inspired me and we all get inspired from reading one another’s blogs. The key is to give the column your own spin. What would you call it? What would your real life mood boards include? What would the theme be?

      • melina says:

thanks! I’m not sure what I’d call it, prob some other pun on the term mood. or make it be on mondays. Like you, I have lots of magazines and alway cut out pictures for my scrapbook, but no one ever sees it, it just hangs out in my living room. I’m thinking maybe something 3D so I can include little toys, vintage patterns or magazines I would not want to damage, nail polish etc. Various themes, prob organized by color, theme (like little mermaid, 90s, Jem). I want it all on a cork roll background, though, I know that. I’ve always loved loved loved corkboards. as always, you’re such an inspiration. Now if only I could be half as organized as you, my life would be totally together!

Joy @OSS: Thanks, it feels weird that I hadn’t thought of this column a long time go. I guess it’s a good reminder that some of the most obvious things to blog about are right in front of us!

I know what you mean about having the stacks of magazines pile up in the office! I look at them and have a guilty feeling… Maybe I will try something like this! At least it would get to me open my magazines :) Thanks for sharing. I’m always trying to think of good columns.
