What I Wore: Asos Plaid Skirt

There’s nothing quite like being a tourist in your own city. Over the last few weeks Joey & I have been out an about in our S.E. Portland neighborhood as well as downtown, snapping key places we think non-Portlanders would be interested in learning about for an international magazine feature. The truth is that…I don’t get out much. And since I’m a native Oregonian, I feel like I’ve seen everything in my city over and over so it’s been a welcome excuse to view my surroundings with fresh eyes and think about why I like calling this place home.

I made one final trip downtown over the weekend and wore a a checked midi skirt which is a new silhouette for me. Because I’m petite (5’3″) I always figured that skirts below the knee were off-limits. But after I turned 30, I decided to throw all those rules I’d subconsciously made for myself out the window, accept that I was never going to sprout up a few more inches and just wear what I liked. And with temperatures quickly dipping, I’ve been reaching for this wool blend skirt constantly. Girls who wear longer skirts, I get it now!

Playing tourist meant that I got to try out all the places I always pass by. We stopped into Sizzle Pie and though I still really miss Rocco’s, the iconic pizza place that was in that spot before, Joey was happy to see that they have a nice selection of vegan pizza by the slice.

What I Wore: Asos Plaid Skirt

1. Asos Check Midi Skirt (sold out in red but still available in white), 2. Acne Marlin Heels, 3. All Saints Harrah Pipe Skinny Pants, 4. All Saints Lour Roll Neck Pullover, 5. Derek Lam Bodin Cross-Body Bag and 6. Acne Trip Scarf.

Take some time to play tourist in your own town sometime soon. It’s been a great reality check for me, a chance to check out local businesses I’d been hearing about and have an excuse to consume a lot of coffee and try new food cart delicacies. All in all, a good time.

I’m short too, and midi skirts terrify me! I feel stubby already, I’m worried that the midi skirts will just make me feel even more short! I get why wearing a midi in portland would be a great idea for skirt wearers, but in Houston, our winter is probably the same as your fall temperature wise….maybe I should get the courage to wear a midi skirt…..

    • Melinda: Ha, we’re in the same boat! I always thought that because I’m short and petite that anything below the knee was a no-go. But I’m ignoring all those silly rules now, especially with it being freezing cold. It’s so funny how we set all these self-imposed restrictions on ourselves when truthfully, nobody else really cares!

    1. Love that Acne Trip scarf- what a great find!
    2. While I’m not such a huge fan of the town I currently live in, I CANNOT wait to play tourist in my future(February!) home.. Los Angeles!

Love the first picture. I know im viewing as an image and not real life, but I don’t think you look swamped by the skirt at all. I’ve been wanting to get more midi skirts because I have a super long torso, which makes all my dresses short on me. I have to bend over carefully so I don’t flash my butt!

I love how consistent your style is, I’ve not reached that stage, yet. This skirt looks gorgeous on you. You shouldn’t pay attention to your height, you wear wedges, after all. Women from the 50′s and before were about your height too. This prejudice is era bound, I guess :)
I only can imagine how warm that skirt must be.

Saw this necklace at H&M yesterday and thought of you. Okay, I’m done writing now, before you think I’m a stalker.

    • Insomnia: I don’t think it’s intentionally consistent, maybe its just more of being drawn to very specific colors and silhouettes? Being 5’3″ and wearing a 6.5 or 7 shoe, I feel like I’m from the wrong time period sometimes! And I think I’m adjusting to silhouettes that aren’t necessarily as popular these days. I’ve always had it in my mind that A-ine, above the knee skirts are the most flattering…but then I started questioning why I should stick with only what I found “flattering” because it’s so subjective.

I’m always wearing pants in the winter, because I freeze in mini skirts/shorts with tights. HOWEVER, now that I see a fellow little sprout pulling the midi look I might venture out and find myself something in wool. Great idea!

I’ve had the same skirt issue as well being 5ft. I used to get past the height thing by wearing short, fitted at the waist circle skirts but as I’m aging find this looks a bit silly on me now. Always wanted to rock an Audrey Horne Twin Peaks style skirt. The plaid ASOS one you’re wearing looks ace!

i’m 5″ 1′ and have spent the last decade buying skirts too long for me, not realizing they weren’t made with smaller ladies in mind, more like amazonians. now for the first time i am wearing mini’s and they fit perfectly! love that red check skirt though, the waist makes it killer instead of frumpy which is how some longer skirts can look on us petites. the leather jacket also goes really well.
