Fall 2012 Style Direction: School’s Out Forever!

Fall 2012 Style Direction

Over the weekend, I visited Reed College. Here in Portland, it’s almost time for the college kids to head back to school and if I was making the pilgrimage, this would be my official back-to-school look. After spending more than six years in college (two very different degrees add up!), I swore I would never go back — but I can still get into the schoolgirl mindset…and a little Fall shopping.

Fall 2012 Style Direction

Every year, I yell from the mountaintops, “Boho begone!” And finally, this year is my year. Luckily for me (but unluckily for my wallet), all of my favorite things including tartans, red crosses, oversized tassels, menswear-inspired staples, flatforms (more comfy than my old standby, wedges), spikes and boldly patterned knits are filling the stores.

Fall 2012 Style Direction

For Spring, I proclaimed my style direction to be Ladylike Urban Warrior and it pretty much held true — I wore a lot more fashion-forward dresses and even some abstract florals (I’m usually more of a stripes girl). This season though, I’m feeling very much like School’s Out Forever! I graduated but just can’t kick the look — I want all the prep classics but with a coy twist. I want my plaids to have a peplum (above), my flats to have jumbo tassels, my classic patterns to be way oversized and my nails to be as blinding as possible. It’s basically the way my high school self in 1996 imagined my adult self dressing (I actually had the Hard Candy version of that bright yellow NARS polish below back then!)

Fall 2012 Style Direction

I Wore:

1. Tartan Peplum Top, ASOS. 2. BDG High-Rise Jeans, Urban Outfitters. 3. Booties, Proenza Schouler (circa 2009). 4. Bag, Jaeger (circa 2011). 5. Watch, Vintage. 6. Lipstick, MAC Vegas Volt.

Fall 2012 Style Direction

My dream Fall wardrobe would definitely include the following:

1. Vogue Hellas September 2012, 2. Acne Laurie Bag, 3. NARS polish in Amchoor, 4. Acne Azalea Loafers, 5. Topshop Herringbone Cube Coat, 6. Tom Ford Peccary Natalia Bag, 7. Marni Cap-Toe Flatform and 8. Topshop Handknit Cross Jumper.

  1. Oh, schoolkid-esque clothing! How I love it! I spent many a years in pleated everything just because! I’m really digging those flatforms! I didn’t know they had a name! I actually have a really neat pair I got a few months back the heel part are a twine-like fabric and the upper is a camel colored sandal with a gold buckle – they are DEF part of my style direction for the fall.

Though, I have to admit, I caved during the recent Solestruck sale and picked up the Olgas you had on a while back, but, in the nude because they would match my clothing more! So I am really excited about them. Most of the Mori-esque fashion I like tends to use flats and boots, but I wanted to be able to wear wedges! I love wedges ;;! But yeah, lots of layers (as much as Florida will let me wear) and flowy dresses. More of the same, but with lighter hair and more floral touches!

Melissa Doninic: Yes, flatforms are where it’s at! It’s tough when you like somewhere with a warmer climate when Fall layers are EVERYWHERE. And oh man, the Olgas. I need to wear those more — they have that 70s uniform vibe but with a crazy twist.

      • Yeah, I’ve taken to just layering tank tops with gauzy type tops! It sort of works and I can get away with about 2 skirts on a time without getting too hot…

I really should fashion post, haha.

I sort of obsessed over the Olgas after you posted them, which I rarely do. Especially after I saw the nude pair. I love the 70s rollerskate style they have (they remind me also of figure skaters booties in the nude). I can’t wait to try them with everything.

(I tagged you in an image of the flatform-type shoes I have. even if my foot makes them seem like they aren’t totally flat, they are!)

Anyway, can’t wait to see what sorta neat outfits you come up with this season!

Great photos! I like the look. I work in New Haven, CT, so now that Yale is back in session the streets are crawling with college students. They all look so damn young! Makes me feel a bit ancient…

    • Nubby says:

Francine: It sounds a bit idyllic being near an Ivy League college! I graduated high school 12+ years ago now so all the fresh-faced college kids leave me feeling a bit ancient too. ;)

    • Nubby says:

Mirella: The sad, sad answer is that no, they are not very walkable at all. They’re more of a fancy sculpture. Most of the time, they’re displayed on a shelf above my desk. But I still love them so!

  3. Melinda says:

You know…I have bad bad memories of wearing plaid…I swoooore I would never wear it again after I moved to public school (don’t ask about my crazy catholic school dayz!). Although, that top has me swooning right now!!! I think I’m really in love at the moment. As for heels that go with fall (and spring) are these Juliet 2 peeptoe heels I purchased a while back. They’re this dark shade of jade that work in both season and I can transition easily from one to the other. I know “Peep toes in fall!!! WTF!” that is the benefit of living in Houston where summer turns to winter or a mild fall for all you northerners! :)

Liz Davis: I remember what a huge deal it was when they came out with all those “crazy” colors. Funny that you can just pick those same colors up at the grocery story now but at the time it was a pretty magical thing – and remember the coordinating rubber rings?!! The best.

  4. Maryanna says:

Oh man, those shoes are beaaauuuutiful, but I could probably only wear them while artfully standing in corners or something because walking would mean constantly toppling over like a baby giraffe. I don’t know how you do it.
