I believe in keeping inspiration close. And this Love Life print by Antigirl is one of my favorite reminders to embrace every moment and opportunity that comes my way. Last week, I took it into Michael’s (a craft store chain) to get a quote on custom framing and even with a coupon, I was told that the total would still be a few hundred dollars (my eyes quite literally bulged out of my head)! As I walked away from the counter feeling defeated, Joey noticed the exact sized frame I needed down a side aisle, marked down to $14.99! Perfect. My office is a much happier place now.

I just found out about The Lab Magazine and needless to say, I’m in love. The design is beautiful, the content is insightful and I can’t get enough of their choices in typography. To me, magazines are even more important now than ever before. I buy them by the bunches just to have that real life inspiration close because it just doesn’t feel refreshing to spend every waking moment on the internet. Plus, it’s always good to break up your routine!

This weekend when I stopped by Schoolhouse with my dad to make a very special purchase I’d been planning for months, I visited the Ristretto Roasters inside for the first time. Truly one of the best coffees we’ve had in our entire lives. And I couldn’t stop snapping photos of their rad sign, emblazoned with a healthy dose of crosses.

Also inside of Schoolhouse is a great little florist shop, Anna Mara Flowers.

Even though my personal style tends to veer more towards the modern, I always love the displays at Schoolhouse. I knew the place was cool but now I’m completely enamored knowing that they let llamas in!!!! The one on the right has a slight resemblance to my very handsome friend, Nigel.

After Schoolhouse, I wandered through N.W. Portland and it occurred to me that this is as close as we’re gonna get to San Francisco here. Star, please move in!

On Wednesday, Solestruck had a private event at their PDX retail location showcasing their selection for next season. They have the best staff — really, they make you feel so welcome and you know how rare that can be in retail! I got quite the surprise when I walked in and noticed the patrons holding the shopping bags that I’d designed many months earlier and long forgotten about! In other exciting news, my brother shot the Portland section of the new Solestruck lookbook. People sometimes ask if it’s weird living in the same house as a sibling and both being designers…and I always respond with, “not really.” Living with family is pretty awesome.

Finally, I leave you with this hilarious cover….from September 2010. The web is dead. It’s just resting. Paper is dead, too. It’s been an action-packed week and I’m so looking forward to taking it easy this weekend, getting in some good times with friends and sending a project that I’ve grown very attached to off to print.

Ah! I love that LOVE LIFE print. I just asked her to send me an invoice for one! It’s perfect.

Have I told you how much I love your W.I.P. posts? I dooooo. I do! & I miss you!!! Cam you feel the spirit of change blowing through the blogosphere? I can! Life is transforming! I’m so excited… I also went to a really hippie event last night which might be why I am talking like a cracked-out Deepak Chopra ;D

    Love you… <3 <3 <3

Gala: We are totes on the same wavelength and I’m so looking forward to chit-chattin’ with you this weekend. I was looking at your crazy yoga rave photo on Instagram this morning, blown away that such a thing existed!

Ristretto Roasters makes a mean hot chocolate. It’s even prettier than the coffee, and not too sweet.
I couldn’t stop taking photos when I was there.

    • Nubby says:

Auntie Nubs: Next time we’re out, I’d love to stop in and grab some with you. A lot of the time, I prefer hot chocolate to coffee anyway. Looking forward to dinner (and possibly dessert!) with you next week.

I just recently threw out a copy of that wired magazine, no lie. ha ha ha! I had a GIANT stack of them in my closet from that time frame.(Love when you buy something and you end up with a 2 year subscription to something you’d never read, even if it is interesting).

    ANYWAY.

I may hit up the grand fantastic Miami Youth Fair this year on the grounds of my old campus, Florida International University – that is, if the stars align and my dear grandmother is feeling better (I help care for her – living with family *is* grand). If not, I will likely stay here and lock myself indoors with some soccer games on television and fiction writing – Really need to get cracking on my serial novel~

    Hope your weekend is grand!

    • Nubby says:

      m. dominic: Hahaha! I didn’t have a chance to dig in past the headline but plan on reading the article today just to see what it was all about. Hopefully it’s entertaining! I have a stack of about, oh, 50 MAGAZINES taunting me that I’ve never read so I totally understand. I hope your grandma feels well enough so you can go out – my grandma is in her mid-80s and as feisty as ever! She still loves bar-hopping, country / western concerts and gambling!

      • m. dominic says:

Your grandma is a total inspiration! When mine (who is also mid-80s!) is feeling up to it, she loves to go to the casino, there is one in Miami that is a bit run-down but the inspiration you get from the place is fantastic!

  4. Heehee, as a print designer who has worked in print media for almost 9 (!) years, I love that Wired cover. A friend who is a web developer has been telling me for years that print is dead, and I just smile. I do some web magazines too, but people still love printed pieces.

This weekend, since you asked, I am going to a party some friends are throwing for a local band, The Latenight Callers. They played our wedding a year ago, too. The party was supposed to be before the release of their second CD, but got pushed. My husband and a co-worker are catering the party, and there will be cocktails, and probably karaoke. I’ve got a vintage dress I had heavily altered that I am looking forward to wearing.

Other than that, I’ve got some design/marketing work to do, and I’m hanging with a gal pal on Sunday. :)

    • Nubby says:

Louise LeMans: Totally agreed. Print will never fully die. It’s just shifting into other areas. While not every catalog or media kit goes to print these days, retail campaigns still often need to be changed out every season and a lot of the items I see going to print are in smaller runs but way more premium. Nothing will ever take the place of holding an actual printed piece in your hands! Your weekend sounds fun. I have a few invites but I’m most excited just to kick it with a cousin I don’t get to see that often.

The colorful houses are in my neighborhood… I must admit, they had to grow on me. But during research for my upcoming cruise and seeing all the colorful homes along the Italian coast and seeing your image, I like them MUCH more now :)

Hey Nubby, if you EVER need any help regarding framing advice, let me know. I used to work at the Hobby Lobby framing department for almost 4 years (on and off), so I know my way around cheap but quality framing (those that are not customized). Again, most of the information is based off my personal experiences at Hobby Lobby, after me leaving (Jan 2012) the store, I have yet to set foot in one of those stores since! I’m just sharing information I personally know for those who want to have cheap framing. If you want to patron Hobby Lobby that is your business, but I know some tips and tricks that’ll make your experiences easier on your check book! Hopefully, after a while I’ll head into Hobby Lobby again…maybe not.

    Tip:
    - Always go for the cheap glass, the better glass IS NICE, but not worth your money unless you have an oddball small frame. If the price of the better glass is about $3-5 more than the regular stuff at a size larger than 11×14 inches, then its a good deal! (You can also go to a specialty glass shop to see if they will sell you the glass you need, most of the time it is cheaper than any frame shop)
    - Unless your print is limited edition or a one of a kind (which is sadly most of my stuff), go for the more expensive matting that is Acid-Free, this will help your print last longer in the frame with less damage. If it’s a print that you could care less about then go ahead and use the less expensive matting. Diplomas, lithographs, screen prints, antique art pieces (those with sentimental value or possible resale), do those in the better matting (Acid-Free) since they will help with the aging process of your artwork.
    - Getting a custom frame sounds nice, because you can customize the frame, mats and fillets to your specifications, but sometimes the print you do have may be a standard size so having that custom price may not be for you. Standard sizes include (mostly at Hobby Lobby in inches) 8×10, 10×13, 11×14, 16×20, 20×24 (at some locations), 22×28, 24×36. There are some inbetween sizes too, just ask someone to measure for you, but for heaven’s sakes check the in stock frame sizes before they convince you to get a custom frame. I included have played this game, its sleazy, but with corporate trying to beat you down with a numbers game, you tend to have to do what you need to, to not get yelled at (one of the reasons I quit).
    - I don’t know about Michale’s but at Hobby Lobby, they have a clearance section every spring with old Custom frames for about 66% off, and most of the frames I’ve accumulated in the past have come from this section. Its cheap framing for more that half of the price!!
    - Hobby Lobby runs a 50% off sale every week on custom framing for those who want to know, just check the Hobby Lobby site. This applies to the —>FRAME ONLY! <—
    - Don't go to one store if your print can ONLY be custom framed, I've found that if you shop around for custom framing, you will definitely get a better deal, just ask for a quote on your favorite frame, mat and glass choices, and go to different shops. This will ensure to you that you are getting a better deal!

Hope this helps for next time!

    <3 Melinda

Melinda: Thanks for all the advice! I still need to get a few more posters framed and will keep this in mind before taking the plunge next time.
