Freezing to death in front of the Belmont Stumptown, Saturday

Welcome to The Week In Pictures! Ah man, it’s been a looooong week. I was doing trend research for five days straight which sounds like a blast (endlessly perusing the interwebs!) but when there’s deadlines and a detailed strategy involved and you hit hour ten of sitting in front of the screen and your eyeballs feel like they’re gonna pop out of your head, the initial excitement evaporates. Definitely gotta recharge and refocus this weekend and get in some family time. My work / life balance has been super off lately and it’s time to remedy that.

I just picked up a bunch of new design books, a few of which include how to build portfolios (both online and off). I built mine based on my own research at the time so it will be interesting to see how the strategy in these books potentially differs. I know that for many of us, portfolios are always a work in progress so I’ll be reviewing these in future posts.

Sweet little Rocky is always so patient, lounging while I’m working. He’s quite the cuddler, too (shhh, wouldn’t want to wreck his tough guy reputation. After all, he’s named after the Rocky).

My favorite weekend routine is to go out to breakfast with Joey at Paradox (very vegan-fiendly) and then follow up with a vanilla latte and scone at Stumptown. I love the E A T sign inside Paradox.

There’s beauty everywhere around us. Ever since I got Instagram, I pay more attention to the little details.

Bianca always gives me a good laugh. It’s hard being so far away from so many of my close friends but chatting about past presidents and their jaunty attire cheered me up this week. Bianca’s hash tag for presidents she’s madly in love with: #forefatherwood

On March 22nd here in Portland, it snowed. SNOWED. Everyone was tweeting me, going “It’s 80 degrees where I am!!!!” Go ahead, rub it in! Haha. Come on, Spring! I’m off to finish a project that’s been trailing me now for months and get in that said family time. Have an awesome weekend, everyone!

Nubby, I have a question for you: since nowadays you can find just about anything on the internet, is it really worth buying books on design? I mean, there are tutorials, guides, tips and tricks, tons of inspiration available for free – why should be pay money to get the same thing on paper? Is it really an advantage to that?

    • Nubby says:

Lu: Great question! Personally, while I do a ton of visual research for projects on the internet, I feel like a lot of the same great examples of design get shuffled over and over. Flipping through books and magazines can help you think in a different way, clear your mind and lose some of the distractions. Also, when it comes to subjects such as layouts and print production, I want to get a more in-depth read on them vs. a bite-size article. I love the tactile nature of design books and mags – sometimes it’s good to just get offline.

I’ll trade you our unseasonably hot weather for your snow! I’m totally the odd one out over here wishing the heat would go away and that we could have our winter back. I think I need to move to Iceland or something…

Your photo of some of your design books reminded me of something I wanted to ask you a little while ago. You’ve posted about a handful of portfolio resources & books before, but I’m wondering if you recall any of them somehow being translatable to interior design? I’m taking my senior portfolio class now, and I’m finding the actual design aspect of it kind of lacking (since it is an interior design course, after all, and not graphic design). I’m no graphic designer, but I want a rockin’ portfolio and I think I could do it with the right direction. Anything stick out to you off the top of your head? Thanks Nubby, I really value your design advice. :)

Krissy: Apologies for the delayed response, it’s been a super busy week! I wish I knew of some portfolio resources that were applicable to interior design but nothing immediately comes to mind. My number one rule though is to keep page layouts consistent and clean to allow the work to be the primary focus and shine through. No matter what you decide to do layout-wise (perhaps your teacher has some input and resources?) an amazing cover to pull it all together would go a long way. I have a list of cover resources if you want to drop me an email! Keep up the awesome work, your dedication to your program shows!

I think any book on designing websites and digital portfolios is a must for all designers. Designing for yourself is a daunting enough task as it is, but then to expand that out to the interactive world is a whole other animal. Unless you’re well versed in coding/programming, know all the “rules” in designing for the web and have a keen sense of how users should interact with a website, it’s going to be a struggle for designers early on in the process of designing for the online medium.

    • Nubby says:

PG: Absolutely. The more informed we are as designers, the better. In school, we only had enough time for one web-based class and looking back, I wish I could have taken two years’ worth! Books definitely help to fill in those gaps.

      • PG says:

I’m with you on that. The two semester web design class I took in college only covered the basics… and that was back in the early ’00s. Back then you could probably get away with just sending employers or clients a PDF portfolio, but not anymore. Web design and the Internet have evolved so much since then. Just by being proactive and seeking out various resources, like books, has immensely filled my web knowledge tank.
