Life Under The Big Top: An Afternoon at Circus Circus

The first of our three-part photo series from a whirlwind trip to Vegas last month is finally here!

Circus Circus is one of those classic Las Vegas landmarks that conjures up images of a bygone era. Opened in 1968 and the size of a spacious compound, it features a famous indoor carnival midway stuffed to the brim with kid’s games but Kat, Gala and I were there for a lesser-known attraction: the RV park. Of course, this being Vegas, the RV park had an extra special attraction — Airstream trailers!!!

Behind the scenes, this photo shoot took months of planning with constant emails flying back and forth between me in Portland, Gala in New York, wedding photographer Lisa Devlin and Kat in the U.K. and wedding photographer David McNeil, who happened to be in India at the time. Somehow though, it came together beautifully as the crew showed up at 9 a.m. sharp to our suite at The Cosmopolitan in late February.

To be completely honest, this is the first time I’d been on a shoot of this size and had both my hair and makeup professionally done. Your Beauty Call fixed the three of us up in record time and whatever magic the makeup artist LaVey used is beyond me — 10 hours later, our faces were still in place, even after frolicking through a windswept desert. And, my backcombed ‘do lasted for four days afterward. Trust me, with this heavy mop of hair, that’s a world record. These girls can handle Paris Hilton and The Kardashians so surely they have a few tricks up their sleeves!

Thanks to everyone for a day I’ll never forget. It all feels very far away now but the photos bring back all the memories of one of the best twelve hour stretches of my life. The magic of Vegas really comes alive when you’re surrounded by a great group of people.

Juliane: Thanks! You were the first wedding photographer I ever worked with and now, Lisa and David. Wedding photographers have such an amazing knack for catching the perfect light and tiny details.

  1. Nikki Noir says:

Beautiful photographs of three beautiful ladies. I’m visiting America for the first time in April of this year and spending a week in Vegas, it’s nice to read about it and get some fun ideas.

    • Nubby says:

Nikki Noir: Ahhh, you’re gonna love it! For us Americans, any more than 3 days in Vegas is too much but Kat was there for 10 days and found plenty to do. Make sure to catch some shows! That’s the one thing I regret not doing…

    • Nubby says:

Vanessa: Thanks! Gala, Kat & David did a great job researching and scouting locations…I owe them big time for finding such great spots. Wait till you see more of the ghost town, it’s pretty rad.

  2. Gracie says:

I love the one of you all on the phone! Your dress is £$%^ amazing, looks gorgeous on you, sad to see it’s out of stock on Asos. Your make up and hair look so good. Gush I know!

  3. Auntie M says:

I am crazy about your photo shoot, you are a beauty my dear and I just LOVE everything about these pictures. All three of you look absolutely amazing.

    Love Auntie M :D

  4. Alexandra says:

Beautiful photos! the telephone pic is my favourite :) I’m curious about what the photoshoot was about? are you ladies working on something together?

    • Nubby says:

Alexandra: We just happened to be all in the same place at the same time and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to collaborate on something fun!

  5. Amelia says:

Do you pride yourself in being the stereotypical unoriginal cardboard cut out graphic designer? Boring, unoriginal, and no real talent. Next.

    • Nubby says:

Amelia: You’re entitled to your opinion but as long as my clients are happy and likewise, I’m happy with the work produced, that’s all that matters to me at the end of the day.

    • Auntie Nubs says:

Ugly comments like this speak volumes about the person posting….when you are happy with yourself, there is no need to spew ugliness and hatred into the world.
Nubby, I know how talented you are and how hard you work. Know that this comment is not about you, and keep doing your wonderful work. Let the hater stew in her own muck.

  6. I don’t understand why this post doesn’t have 1000 comments yet. Maybe it needs some time. Or maybe people don’t know what’s good. And actually, maybe you don’t want 1000 comments if they’re going to say mean things about your friends. Go, Internet, go!

Anyway, these are awesome, and some of them are even not-washed-out! Not that I don’t not like the desaturated ones. Especially the phone one. Glad one of my blogging friends pointed me here!

  7. Auntie Nubs says:

I love these photos. You all look gorgeous, and so comfortable together. I especially love the phone photo–retro perfection.
And by the way–you’re one of the most talented and hardworking people I know. You amaze me.
