2012 Style Direction: Ladylike Urban Warrior

Every year, I like to dream up a new style direction as a goal to work towards. Late 2010 and most of 2011 was dedicated to a direction I dubbed Parisian Cyborg and that was super fun. A few months after that post debuted, I did go to Paris and wore a nearly identical look (I was definitely overdressed and the sleek, understated Parisians probably thought I was nuts).

So, what exactly does Ladylike Urban Warrior mean? Even though I love to feel feminine and adore makeup, dresses and sequins, I’m still drawn to the extreme and avant garde when it comes to fashion. The dress I’m wearing above (recently found on sale at Asos) in particular sums up my new direction because it’s a fairly classic silhouette but the neoprene material, laser-cut details and built-in harness add a modern twist.

I find the idea of dreaming up a style direction really motivating and as a way to push ourselves into new sartorial territory. For most of December and January, I was working 10 to 12 hours every single day on an ad campaign and out of exhaustion, defaulted to a uniform of black jeans and sweaters. Mentally, I was completely drained and just couldn’t think beyond the basics in my wardrobe. I’ve since set a few goals, namely to wear more color, to accessorize with jewelry more often and finally, to add in some more color to my makeup routine (a current favorite is the MAC Double Feature 1 palette). To me, clothing is the equivalent of wearable art. It’s one of the most accessible forms of self-expression and occasionally modifying your personal style can be hugely inspiring.

I’m wearing: Asos dress, Mimimarket wedges, H&M tights and an H&M Headband.

Readers: Have you made any modifications to your look this year? How would you sum up your personal style?

I love your style. It is so different than mine but I appreciate a woman that values personal style as an avenue of expression. I’m gravitating towards a French/American chic look. I love having classic staples and then accenting with jewelry or a belt. I’m trying to avoid sweats and instead embrace and accentuate my femininity with pretty underwear and red lipstick (as a stay-at-home mom I can forget that it’s the little things that go a long way). Thank you for creating such a unique and inspirational space. xx

Vanessa Rae: You can never go wrong with classic staples. Plus, it’s great to have a solid canvas to build your look from! When we get busy with life, it’s easy to forget about the little things but those small additions can be huge confidence boosters. BTW, I checked out your blog and you have a great thing going. Fabulous! Your Parisian Cyborg absolutely inspired me to name my style direction, and after much reframing what I finally came up with was: “Mad Men Meets Mad Max.”

The singer Janelle Monae is a great example, and pop culture influences include the movies Blade Runner, 2046, and Delicatessen. In the fashion world, Marc Jacobs, McQueen, and Prorsum come closest to this grown-up punk sensibility: it’s a lot of men’s tailoring and pale ladylike plus bright neon colors—with spikes, studs, extraneous zippers, and leather straps.

Sam Edelman spiked court shoes, Valentino studded kitten-heel sandals, Pour La Victoire studded oxfords, demure pencil skirts with zippers from hip to hem, loads of argyle, All-Saints Spitalfield, and a Kenneth Cole silver watch with a band constructed of pyramid studs.

Science fiction is often broken into the “clean future” (Star Trek, Gattaca, 2001: A Space Odyssey) or the “dirty future” (Star Wars, Blade Runner, Brazil); the MM-m-MM look straddles both.

    Here’s a peek at its execution: http://positdesign.com/2011/10/ttibtil-mad-men-meets-mad-max/

chrisbean: You really went all out! I love Mad Men Meets Mad Max soooo much! It’s such a great juxtaposition of periods and looks. There’s something really great about merging the old with the new. Your description of your direction is so crisp and clear, I can see it all coming together, piece by piece in my head. Also, your information about the science fiction genres is really helpful because though I’m not necessarily into the body of work categorized within it, I adore the fashion references that have been drawn from it and didn’t know the division of “clean future” and “dirty future” existed.

Do you know who China Chow is? She wears a lot of wearable art type clothing on Work of Art that I think fit your new style direction, but I’m having trouble finding recent pics on google images.

    • Nubby says:

isidore: Yes, China, the daughter of Tina! I love her style. I don’t see her in magazines as much anymore but she’s always had a really great sense of style.

  4. Esther says:

Wow, I need to do one of these. I’ve felt really aesthetically scattered lately. But if I were to say off the top of my head I’d go with… fancy punk. Ha, I need to work on that! I think I’m lacking in life direction, so if I can even get a fashion direction going, that would be a good first step.

So how did you get started, deciding what your look for the year was?

    • Nubby says:

Esther: Usually, I’ll come across one piece of clothing that really inspired me and then, with some more digging, start building a look around that piece. I’m now using Pinterest a lot to catalog visual inspiration and usually, common themes will start to pop up. Sometimes it’s not easy to dream up a direction. I spent months trying to pinpoint what exactly I was going for and one day, it finally came to me.

I need to redo my style, but alas, with the lack of money at the moment, I may have to scour goodwill and Buffalo Exchange to redo my school wardrobe. Actually, I found a Buffalo Exchange far from the more shopped one in the Westheimer area of Houston, and still has great items that haven’t been picked over. Maybe I’ll do another teacher friendly style change, I need to stray away from my “safe” sweaters and nautical stripes.

    • Nubby says:

Melinda: I am constantly cleaning out my closets and trading in old clothing at Buffalo Exchange for new items as well. It’s a great way to update your wardrobe on a budget and because the prices are so reasonable that I’m willing to take more fashion risks.

Oh Fashion! I went from crazy Post-Apoc/Cyberpunk (very much that Dirty Future mentioned above – I live/write/breathe that kinda stuff!) to Data Gypsy (post-apoc type stuff, drapy blacks and tactical gear with large, flowing skirts and nonsensible shoes) to being heavily inspired, these days, by Mori Girl (dunno if you know know much about it, a sect of Japanese fashion that is basically similar to what you would wear if you lived in the forrest, or, were a city girl wishing you lived in the forrest).

I had to overhaul my entire wardrobe, basically – switching out all my blacks for browns and creams, but, I feel it works so well for my lately. I’m constantly in long, brown and cream socks, dresses and LAYERS. Layers are crap for Miami heat, but, I try to keep them thin and build upon wearing tank tops to help.

    • Nubby says:

      m. dominic: Your imagination never fails to amaze me. Seriously. I love the thought and attention to detail you give to your style directions. Never heard of Mori Giri but now I’m intrigued! I love how clothing is such a form of creative expression to you. Thanks for sharing!

      • m. dominic says:

Aww, that is really the sweetest thing you could ever say! <3

I really try to dress like how I would imagine the characters in my stories would dress, it sort of helps me get the mood at all times. Once, upon meeting a stranger in a Miami coffee shop, he asked me what I did. I told him I was a writer, took one look at my outfit (a gypsy skirt w/ a ton of different prints, tank top and goggles) and was like "Yup, that makes sense."

  8. Moni says:

Honestly, I have NO IDEA what my style is like. I feel like I like everything. I like florals, I like studs, I like masculine clothing, I like feminine things too… how does that all add up? No clue. I try to define my style a little so that I don’t feel pulled in 20 different directions when I go shopping, and that works, but overall I feel clueless. :P
