Do What You Love

do what you love

Last week, I found these simple yet powerful screen prints by coniLab on Etsy and thought they’d be a perfect reminder to hang in my office, just in time for the new year.

With so many blogs peeking into other people’s (seemingly perfect) lives constantly surrounding us, it’s easy to lose track of our own in the shuffle. Some people are born knowing what their path in life should be but for the rest of us, it isn’t that easy. Sometimes it takes more than a just dream — a mentor, a specialized education, money, a plan. When you do finally find the right path, everything else begins to unfold as it should. I took a few chances this year — the kind where you feel your stomach drop for a second and wonder, “What have I just done?” Those are the chances that make you feel alive though. I just kept repeatedly telling myself, “When you put yourself out there, great things usually happen” and I feel like I’m wrapping up the most fulfilling year yet (trust me, it wasn’t easy). If you’re unhappy or unfulfilled, It’s up to you to make that shift. Embrace what makes you unique instead of erasing it in the process. Put your best foot forward, let the entire world know what you want to do with your life and then conspire to make it happen. 2012 is right around the corner and it’s never too late to do what you love and love what you do.

S: Good! 2011 has been so challenging on so many levels for everyone around me and hopefully, with some positive momentum going in, we can slowly start to make a shift and turn things around for the better.

I’ve been a longtime lurker on the site and not much of a comment person. 5 mins ago though i just sent out what was one of the most difficult emails I’d ever had to write for work where essentially i stepped down because I couldn’t do more. My heart was in my mouth and I just felt like a failure as I wrote that. Then I’d came to the site to check out the latest update and as much as I still feel sad, Nubby it’s exactly what I needed to hear to pick myself up and keep on going. 2011 had been about me learning about my faults and what I DON’T love, 2012 will be about being ok with that and focusing on what i do love instead. Thank you for all your time and love into this blog and sharing it with the rest of the world…

DD: I know all too well what writing one of those emails feels like! The thing is, we tend to build up the whole event in our heads and overanalyze it and once it’s done with, it feels like a huge weight has been lifted. The hardest part is writing it, now you’re free. It’s easier to just keep coasting but you took a stand and did what was best for you. That takes courage. Here’s to a rewarding 2012!

It’s quiet special but every time I despair, I find and I read posts like yours, it’s really comforting ! )

Thank you have a nice week-end

Thank you for writing this. All too often, it seems as though bloggers (or anyone involved in social networking) only puts their best foot forward. But everyone is human (except Siri?) and everyone has highs & lows. Thanks for mentioning some of the not so best times. Life gets hard, but it’s usually worth it.

So excited to read your blog in 2012!

    • Nubby says:

Leanna: Agreed. Social media has shifted dramatically over the last few years and everything is so polished now! What we tend to forget is that behind the glossy facade are humans with the exact same struggles as us.

  7. I agree 100%! This year, I moved cross-country from NYC to L.A. to pursue TV writing. 2 years ago, I quit my day job and decided to pursue freelance writing as full-time as possible. Both changes were scary – hell, I’m still scared – but I’m also happier than I’ve ever been, because I’m living my life exactly the way I want. Others might be more “secure,” but I know that I’m compromising less. And that feels amazing.

Here’s hoping 2012 brings more of that amazing feeling! :)

I spent the best part of a year trying to get to where I am now and now that Im here, Im thinking about putting my stuff in storage, packing my car with the essentials and couchsurfing / working on farms through southern England and western Europe for the next however long it takes till I get bored of that too.

I feel stagnant. I dont know what Im passionate about (apart from sleeping). Im not in touch with my creativity. Im off to find out exactly what makes me tick.

Melea Seward: Too many people play it safe, thinking the safe route is better than the unknown. But playing it safe isn’t necessarily fulfilling. Those leaps of faith are what keep us feeling alive.

So I am definitely late in replying to this… but wanted to let you know that you are one of my inspirations! I am going back for a 2nd degree to learn and develop my skills to one day work as a graphic designer – my goal before I’m 30 is to finish the program and start my new career in the field… I’m 27 now taking classes with 20 year olds (yipes!), but loving every minute of it! :) As George Eliot said – It’s never to late to be what you might have been!

    • Nubby says:

GabrielleY: Your comment totally made my day! I didn’t go back to school for my second degree (in design) until I was 25 and I set similar goals. Because I had a goal in mind during the entire program, I worked extra hard and fought even harder to land my first choice for an internship which led to my first job in the industry. I am so proud of you for following your heart and doing what you love. Nothing can stop you now!
