This December, my first solo show in three years, My Cross To Bear will be hosted at Sequential Art Gallery in Portland. Some people have been asking me why I’m doing art again. The simple answer is that I like a challenge. When you sit behind a computer all day, you you can hit a few keys and undo your mistakes. When you’re collaging and pouring resin, if you make a mistake, you have to step back and start over. Working in a different medium forces you to think in a completely different way. I love switching up my routine and facing a new challenge. More information about this 15 piece series will be following very soon. In the meantime, I’d like to share my first two pieces with you. Both are ceramic red crosses and feature collages that are coated in resin.

Rosie: Thanks, the symbolism of the red cross has made a consistent appearance since my first solo show in 2005. It has a lot of meaning to me. And these art pieces are much more personal than most of my design work so I really want those elements to come through.

I really admire when an artist takes the time to give their work a real conceptual approach. Lately, a lot of digital work circulating through the media is simply “looking pretty”, while some more in-depth approaches could be made.

All in all, when I see something in purely black and white, it allows my eye not to get distracted with color. The composition in the gloved one is tasty! These would be great pieces to have in an all-white room with black accents.

    Cheers, Nubby! These are fantastic!

Leelah: Good point with the black and white. And there’s a bit more of a message behind the series which I hope to expand upon and share when the artist’s statement is released.

Lauren: Thanks! Collage and doing things by hand is such a challenge for me. I’m too accustomed to moving along faster and doing everything digitally. It’s been hard but I just keep pushing myself because it’s good to be challenged.

I love them! Looks great! One thing: are you using the type “My Cross to Bear” in the ads/signage of the show? Because when I first read it, I thought it said “My Gross Bear.” I think because the “r” is too far into the “c”. Maybe it’s just me…

    • Nubby says:

Lola: I took another look and it doesn’t really read that way to me…but I understand how people not familiar with the series could see that. I’m not getting show cards printed for a few more weeks and am going to get a few more opinions in the meantime. I got my promo materials designed early so I have some time to fine-tune everything!

Uber cool Nubby as always, will you be selling them here? the type ‘My Cross to bear’ looks fine, I can’t see a G at all. Next thing they’ll be wanting you to change the bear to bare lol. Great work Nubby.

Kazz: All of the art will be available through Sequential Art in December and I’ll provide the contact information on my blog. And remaining pieces will be sold in my online shop. And the funny part is that if the ‘C’ and ‘r’ were merged into a ‘G’ in the logo, then it would say ‘Goss.’ People are going to see what they want to see.
