The Typofiles #83: I Love Bodoni

Oh, Bodoni. I was first introduced to Bodoni during my first year of graphic design classes and it has become one of my go-to serifs in the years since. I love Bodoni so much that at one point I even made shirts and posters honoring its curves!

Anyway, enough gushing! Gingko Press just sent me a copy of I Love Bodoni, a book from Victionary’s I Love Type series and it’s phenomenal. Bodoni was originally created in 1798 by Giambattista Bodoni and was mainly used for books printed in letterpress. This book, numbering over 150 pages is a fantastic overview of how Bodoni has been modernized by today’s designers.

I love the neon orange detailing on this book. You want to know what else is really cool? All of the featured designers and studios are indexed in the back with links to their websites.

I loved the Avant Garde title as well, but Bodoni is my favorite. The posters, mailers, identities and more translate to showing just how versatile and classy Bodoni is. There are about 20 more pages that I would have scanned because the content is that good. You can learn more about Bodoni and the other I love Type titles over at Gingko Press.

HA! interesting, I just bodoni on an invitation I’m designing for my sister’s wedding. I liked it much better than other formal fonts, because of its simple appearance. Funny, it goes with a princess theme!

Bodoni is such a gorgeous font! Thanks for this post! I never knew the name of the font before. I very much like the look of that book! Thanks for sharing some of it with us!

Melinda: Depending on the weight you use, Bodoni pretty much goes with everything — it’s definitely in my top 5 favorite serif fonts.

Lisa: Sadly, I haven’t seen it — I never had the time when it came out and then it just never happened. I need to add it to my list!

Rachael: I’m glad that you now know, it’s one of the most versatile serifs out there!

Ahem… I’m not quite sure the “Play with me” headline IS Bodoni. It is Bodoni-like, to be sure. It is another face, whose name starts with “M,” I believe. I can’t recall the name of the face. Anyone?
