For a long time, our dining room has felt like it was missing something. In general, all white rooms can feel cold and empty without some design details that add a sense of depth and texture. Over the weekend, Joey and I wallpapered one of the walls with Woods by Cole & Son. Neither of us had wallpapered before but one Youtube video later combined with a stop at Home Depot to get wallpaper paste, a drop cloth and one very spongy roller and we were ready to go. We cut all the pieces first and lined them up on the floor which actually took longer than the hanging process. All in all, the whole job took maybe three hours and was pretty easy. If you’re thinking about wallpapering, it’s definitely a two-person job and requires someone who’s very patient and detail oriented! We’re so happy with the outcome that we’ve decided to do a wall in the living room (which has all white walls combined with all black furniture and a black floor) in the opposite color combination — black with white trees.

Our upstairs bedroom is a little odd considering that it has a total of four full-size doorways. Four! Two lead to big attic spaces. When Joey moved in, the unused space behind the door facing the front of our house was bare rafters, drafty and very dark. Over the past six months, he’s slowly transformed it into his work studio, complete with freshly painted walls, wood trim and IKEA white flooring. It’s really difficult to photograph because while the space is large, there’s a ton of odd angles (can you imagine the work it took for him to drywall?! Luckily he’s a pro at geometry). He still has some more work to do but we’re getting close! More photos to come once we’re completely finished.

Ah, life! Earlier in the week, Joey fractured his ankle while skateboarding and has to go in for surgery on Tuesday. I won’t go into the gory details — that x-ray says it all. It’s going to be at least six weeks before things begin to go back to normal. Poor guy! At least we’re looking forward to a nice night out with my dad tonight and then taking it easy this weekend.

i love how the dining room looks – the wallpaper complements the furniture so well! & it’s a shame about the ankle fracture. i hope he has a speedy, easy recovery.

  2. Gala says:

Poor Joey! Guess he’ll be hobbling around on crutches while we’re out gallivanting around Los Angeles… THAT’S JUST THE WAY THE COOKIE CRUMBLES! Aw. Maybe we could buy him a stylish cast on Rodeo Drive?!?

Wallpaper looks fab… But then, I wouldn’t expect anything else from you!

Can’t wait to see you! xoxo

The wallpaper looks really lovely, I’m super inspired! It looks great with your table. I just made a slipcover for our sofa in a similar print, definitely a great way to add a pattern to a room without getting overwhelming. Hope Joey’s surgery goes well.

  4. Zellain says:

That wallpaper is perfect and works really well with your worn table. I love the studio space as well. I admire the patience you two have!

I really like the tree pattern wallpaper! It goes so well with the rest of the room. Definitely the perfect amount of depth and texture.

I’m sorry about Joey’s fracture. Ouch! Here’s hoping that he’ll have a smooth surgery!

I hope Joey feels better. Btw, I love the way you decorated your studio. I dream of the day I can decorate my own place. Thanks for sharing! <3

  8. Lola says:

    1) I love the wallpaper. 2) Poor Joey! Gosh, by the looks of that x-ray, he did some MAJOR damage! He’s lucky to have such a nice wife! 3) The studio space looks fantastic! But…can a person stand up in there??? Gotta love the old houses and their attics…:) Have a good weekend, love!

  9. Jen says:

Can I ask how many rolls did you use? What kind of paste from Home Depot? It looks fantastic. I have a gift card from Anthropologie with Woods name on it!

Thanks to everyone for wishing Joey a speedy recovery. I let him know about your sweet, thoughtful comments!

Gala: I’m looking forward to LA adventures so much! So excited to see you!

Zellain: Thanks! I’m one of those people that’s super patient because I’d rather take the time to do something right the first time than have to redo it again later…

Lola: Yes, you can stand up at the peak. The angle is in line with our roof so it’s not super tall…I guess I’m glad that I’m short so I can waltz right in! I’ll have to get better photos….the space is way bigger than it looks in the photos.

Jen: We bought two rolls for that wall and have a decent amount left over. It’s tricky because the branches have to line up exactly from piece to piece so there’s some definite waste. I’m not sure what the paste was but it came in a plastic container and was basically the only kind they carried.

Helloshiela: Joey recently starting Luna, a line of old school skateboards and I think the ‘rack’ is just wooden pegs to hold them.

  12. Amy says:

Ouch! I broke my humerus (not funny) 10 weeks ago. Thank goodness it wasn’t my dominant arm, but boy, it sure slowed down my productivity… not to mention how tiring healing is! My best to Joey on feeling better soon!

  13. Bright says:

What a beautiful dining room! It’s to die for.

I live in an apartment, so wallpapering is so out of the question, but I bought two packs of the poppy wall decals you can find at IKEA and put them up in the living room, and they’re beautiful. I feel like I’m in an oversized garden and it really brightens the space.

  14. Jen says:

Great post, Nubby! It’s good to see your living space coming along, and the wallpaper is seriously dynamic in that room. LOVE the table!

Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for the hubby!
