Near Wall Street with Bianca, Saturday

Hello once again! Here’s what I’ve been up to during the last week. The Week in Pictures is a few days late because I was in-flight from New York to Paris for what felt like ages. But, let’s back up a few days. In true New York fashion, the second I arrived on Thursday night, everything felt like it was on fast forward. I am still wondering when New Yorkers find time to sleep! It was so great to catch up with friends, old and new, that very night.

On Friday, I wandered aimlessly, waved to our nation’s first president on the way to the subway and finally made my way to Soho. Oh, and I caved for a pair of leather shorts at Topshop that reminded me of modern lederhosen.

Mischa and Bianca

On Friday night, I was so excited to revisit my favorite bar in the East Village, Ella. The modern 50s era decor is immaculate and the band playing 50s Sinatra-style throwbacks was spot-on. What I love about New York is that you can walk a few blocks and be in a totally different scene. At a 50s rockabilly night at another bar, I sat at the edge of the room while perfectly styled twenty-somethings danced the night away in full skirts, red lips and curls. In contrast, I felt like a cyborg outcast in my head-to toe black, Rick Owens and zippers.

On Saturday morning, Bianca and I cabbed it over to the Meatpacking District to visit Bumble and Bumble and her friend, Mischa (hairstylist extraordinaire). The salon is so beyond amazing. Modern decor with a clinical element paired with a view to kill. What’s not to love?

An early afternoon all-you-can-drink champagne brunch turned into total mayhem; we knew it was time to clear out when a champagne flute was shattered. By the time I got back to Bianca’s apartment and repacked for Paris, there was a drunken dance-off taking place in the living room. I love New York.

Late Saturday night, Gala and I boarded a plane bound for Paris. That was an adventure in itself that I will tell you about someday soon. Until then, I’m off to wander the streets of Paris. xoxo!

Hello, hello!

It’s been an extraordinarily busy last few days as I first flew to New York and then repacked my bags and boarded another plane bound for Paris. But, let’s back up to New York. The moment after I arrived at Bianca’s place, we made our way out to a very dark and chilly Wall Street to shoot photos.

I have soooo much more to share with you! Hold tight though — posting will be less consistent over the next two weeks as Gala and I are busy traveling abroad. Bon Voyage!

Hello from New York!

• Useful typography tips for Adobe Illustrator.

• This Q&A about starting a design business is one of the best I’ve seen.

• I’m loving the classic, hand-done look of New York restaurant Schiller’s new identity.

• Have you heard about the LCD Sound System debacle? Thousands of tickets for their final show were bought up by scalpers and understandably, the band is pissed off and fighting back.

• I love it when TV stations take their look in a more modern direction like the Independent Film Channel. Whether you like the design or not, it’s black and white with not a drop shadow or reflection in sight!

What I Wore: 2.13.11 // Crosses & Curls

I’m not gonna lie, the last few weeks have been really stressful. Sometimes, no matter how much work you have to do, you just have to step away and recharge. On Sunday, I drove out to the suburbs to a hairdresser I’ve been going to for five years, caught up on life and I showed her my wedding photos (we hadn’t seen each other since I’d left for Vegas back in September).

She was inspired by my hair in the photos and did a similar style. I’ve always stayed away from curly hair — to me, sleek, smooth, super shiny hair was most appealing. But I guess with age, I’m softening up! This is only the second time ever I’ve had curls. Change is good sometimes — I need to learn to embrace it more!

Right in the middle of taking these photos, a guy rode between Joey & I and proceeded to drop his massive collection of bottles right in front of us. BOOM! He looked directly at me and smiled and then he rode away without a care in the world.

The Typofiles: Moschino Heart

In honor of Valentine’s Day yesterday, I thought I’d share one of my favorite all-time ads from Moschino. Originally posted back in 2009, classics never go out of style. Joey & I had a really low-key night since I’m leaving for New York soon and still packing and wrapping up projects. We had drinks and dinner at our favorite bar down the street and Rocky even gave me a valentine. I hope you enjoyed your Valentine’s Day!

Graphic: Personal Style Infiltrating Professional Work

nubby twiglet graphic design

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how our personal style tends to cross over into our professional work. After all, as designers, isn’t the reason we get hired, at least in part, based on our past work, neatly tucked into our portfolios for others’ viewing pleasure?

As a designer, I never try to limit myself. I’ve been asked numerous times by clients why I’m not working in fashion. While editorial design is a huge passion of mine, I never want to limit myself. I’ve worked at agencies specializing in extreme sports, I’ve designed logos for farms and metal bands. I always love a good challenge. The number one thing I’ve always said is that as a designer, it’s your job to bring a client’s vision to life. You’re working for them; it’s not all about you.

I’ve worked on massive campaigns and can honestly say that there’s not a trace of my personal style hiding in them. But there are times when I’m hired specifically because of my personal style. I truly believe that we each have one and that if you don’t think you do, it sometimes just takes a few years to develop. As I was looking through my archives this weekend, I pooled together some of my favorite imagery, both personal and professional that I feel is representative of my personal style.

Designers, how would you define your personal style? Do you find it to be beneficial when looking for work? Or is your style so defined that it has limited your new work prospects?

My week went something like this: Wake up bright and early, work on NBA All-Star till dark, come home to freelance work and a million emails, Starbucks Carmel Macchiato (yep, at night) , fall into bed, rinse & repeat. I am so glad it’s Friday! My suitcase is half-packed, I keep looking at the e-tickets for Gala & I, I keep chatting with Bianca about the shoots we have planned in New York, it’s all so exciting! What’s that motto? Work hard and play hard? That’s something I can wholly get behind!

Welcome to my living room. We’d had a hand-me-down couch since we moved in that was much too large for the space but lo and behold, my brother found a quaint little 50s / 60s black vinyl couch on the side of the road a few weeks back. It needs a little TLC but we love it. Oh, and that black globe. Every living room needs one! Note: I am not a taxidermy fiend, my brother is. Ahem. We have three bears in our living room. While Joey and I are of the mindset that less is more, my brother is our polar opposite, feeling that more is better.

When I was in Seattle two weekends ago, the only thing I brought back were some Pantone goodies. I am a self-proclaimed Pantone junkie and my all-time favorite store in Seattle is Paper Haus. They have loads of the stuff. It’s a designer’s dream come true just walking in there. I picked up some pencils, an eraser and a business card organizer book.

In other house-related news, when we moved in nearly two years ago, off my bedroom was a massive unfinished attic area. I always just kept the door closed and never gave the space much thought. When Joey moved in, he needed a studio space and has been remodeling it over the last few months. It’s gone from bare-bones rafters to being fully dry-walled. And now it even has all white wood floors! I’m waiting till he’s fully finished to give you the full tour but wow, it’s looking good.
