• Get a grip, Phil Collins! Seriously, you have to read this. He claims that he now spends time “collecting artefacts from the battle of the Alamo. His fascination with the US civil war is deeper than just an amateur historian’s curiosity: he claims he may have fought in the famous battle during a previous life.” It gets even better from there.

Ace job on posting the 30 days, 30 covers! I was actually in the running to have a cover made for the novel I am working on through there (though, I wasn’t able to finish enough of the story in time, So I pretty much killed myself there, haha). The covers are fantastic and it makes me wanna read each and every single book there.

  2. I can’t help but notice the stupid Urban Outfitters redesign every time I got to their website. I wonder why they feel they need to change it so often. Seems like they’re confused about their own image.

Caroline Royce: Either they’re confused or they’re so cool that they don’t need to have any sort of brand recognition from their constantly changing logo. Anyone’s guess!

A few people that recently graduated from my college work at Urban in the design department. I really don’t get the aesthetic, either, but they are kind of put on a pedestal around here. I’m all for trying new things and breaking rules, but for some reason, the style feels really trendy to me. I personally like your classic style and try to follow your lead. Sometimes, when I’m stuck in a design, I think to myself “What would Nubby do?” Hopefully I can get past the pitfalls of conforming to “ugly” because it’s cool.

Also, the whole Phil Collins thing is really sad. I kinda like his old music…too bad he feels the way he does, but I guess he’s been robbed of his passion.

I don’t want to end on a bad note, so I’ll finish by saying that the baby announcement is super cute. :-)

Lola: A lot of times, I appreciate what UO does and often, they are ahead of the curve. I save every catalog and there have been many times when I pulled out my collection when working on an editorial design job for inspiration. For me though, there’s a point when things become too trendy and when I’m designing, I don’t want my work to look dated in 5 years. UO’s job though is to be ironic and super hip. I don’t think in this case they’re as worried about timelessness as about getting people’s attention. I guess it’s working, for better or worse! Though it’s important to make the client happy, caving to what’s trendy or purposely ugly is a no-no in my book. It’s a tough balancing act!

  4. Jess says:

woah, that urban outfitters redesign is pretty weird. Maybe they’re super ahead of the curve and in a few months or so, the hipsters will be all about these ugly logos?

furthermore, that new blogger advice is much needed since my new blog is, so far, just a series of rants.

  5. Justine says:

That’s a side of Phil Collins I’ve never seen before. All I think of when I see his name is that song “You’ll Be In My Heart”… etc. Can’t imagine him claiming he may have fought insome battle during a previous life. MESSED UP!
