Style Direction: Fall // Winter 2010

Yesterday afternoon, in my dining room.

Lately, I’ve been thinking more about defining my style and developing a strong, unified look for each season (remember Gala’s Psychedelic Ladies Who Lunch?) I’m still very much drawn to black but I want the silhouettes to be sleek and European-inspired. And, I want the dark palette to be offset with a dash of metallic detailing. Body-conscious but not showing too much skin. Tall shoes but with chunky, stable platforms. Major monotone accessories. Space-age and super mod. Slight Michael Jackson-inspired flashes of androgyny. Silver, sequins and studs. What should I call this look?

Current Fashion Inspiration: United Nude Stealth Boots, ModCloth Midnight Foil skirt, Herve Leger dress, Miu Miu Crepe Turn-Lock belt, AIAIAI TMA-1 headphones, Shoes, unknown and ModCloth Shake Things Up dress.

I also created a little mood board with some stylistic influences. I don’t have all of the image sources but I love the top editorial featuring Jessica Stam, Leigh Lezark’s consistently sleek all-black looks, any 60′s space age influences, smooth and shiny bluntly cut hair, the oversized Miu Miu turn-locks, edgy yet comfortable black silhouettes, major treads and statement jewelry with a twist.

Though I don’t actually have anywhere to dress up and go to in Portland at the moment, this would be my ideal seasonal look. I’m wearing an H&M dress, Zana Bayne Leather 4-Buckle belt, Wolford Bondage tights and Sam Edelman Zoe boots.

Readers: Have you ever thought about defining your look and developing a regular style direction?

That dress is seriously amazing. And, forgot to say on your last post: if Journey gets back together with Steve Perry, well. That’s awesome. And I hope they come to PR.

  2. Sally says:

Now THAT is brilliant. And suits you to a t, of course.

I love to dabble, so I don’t think I’d enjoy picking one style direction for the season … but I can definitely see the benefits. Focus, refinement, and a chance to really hone.

  3. Natalie says:

I have thought about it, but I don’t think I could do it! My taste tends to change, I blame it being a Gemini! I do try to stick to black with splashes of colour, as I change my hair colour often, black goes with everything. I then build up on jewellery, shoes & bags to brighten up my outfit. I think that is as close as I can get to refining my style!!

  4. Serena says:

in answer to your question, i have been thinking of doing that recently but i don’t even know where to start. it’s very overwhelming when i have spent very little time thinking of styles in general. i think i’ll try it out though. :)

  5. Annching says:

I love that! Parisian Cyborg. I really enjoy your approach to style, and find that as I’m getting older, I’m into having a more defined sense of style as well.

  6. Yoshi says:

    I love this post!

I have *always* wanted to edit my wardrobe so that it only contains things you might find in 1960s sci-fi (or just the 1960s in general), but I like to experiment and change my style too much!

  7. Ohh wow! This outfit is so refined. I love it.

I do edit my wardrobe with each season. I look at what I have and when I feel I need to add. I tend to decide on a basic colour palette every season and try and work with that.

  8. Alice says:

I have this amazing pair of black waxed jeans, and I wore them so much that I pretty much wore them out, and it took me a really long time to come to terms with buying the same pair again, haha. I kept thinking I should always buy something different and new, and if I stuck to one ‘style’ I wasn’t being creative, but with the basics sorted I can refine my style. Lately I’ve been living a bit of a nomadic lifestyle and it’s nice when everything you own goes together. Although I kind of fear ending up with a boring uniform! (This one ‘The Osbournes’ episode – oh the shame – comes to mind where Ozzy opens his wardrobe and it’s stuffed with same pair of sweatpants over and over…)

Is that dress from H&M recent? Because it’s really incredible!

    New Wave Cinema Road Warrior

Tailored, classic, with an emphasis on your naturally awesome qualities and a hard bit of edge.
    Plus fluffy, slightly messy curls.

Natalie: Being a Gemini is a great excuse — you’ve got to constantly deal with the dueling twins!

Serena: It shouldn’t be difficult..at the end of the day, you just have to go with what makes you feel comfortable.

Gala: Thanks, my Virgo love. Wish we weren’t so far apart at the moment!

Yoshi: That would be my idea as well. :)

Alice: I’m of the mindset that if I wear something a ton, it’s okay to get a backup copy because I know that I’ll get my use out of it. Cracking up over your Osbournes reference! The dress is brand new – I just got it at H&M over the weekend.

You always look amazing but this is my favourite look of yours, the whole post is wonderful! This is my favourite blog and recently I did an oral on your design work for my first year graphic design course and the whole class’s jaw dropped over your style. Thanks for being such an inspiration :)

  12. Esther says:

I’ve dabbled here and there with “trends”, but I always go back to being kind of preppy. Old habits die hard, I guess! And I’m terrible with fussy clothing. I always manage to rip/stain/destroy something if it has too much going on.

  13. Veganpancake says:

I love this so much. The whole idea of ‘Parisian Cyborg’ kinda fits with the personal ideal I’ve had for the last few years… every season, however, I certainly don’t execute it with such finesse as Ms.Twiglet. May I say it seems to be like a darker, sexier version of Shirley Manson’s T – 1001?

  14. I love imagineering a seasonal style direction! My autumnal concept was “Disco Monk” (hoods, sequins, neon, shrouds). It’s time for a winter concept, though … something involving glossy leather + shiny baubles. “Matrix Magpie” … ?

  15. Minou says:

I go through phases where I do this. A few years back I was “valium vintage trophy wife”..this year I’d say more “zombie hunting rock androgyne”.

  16. RebeccaD says:

I love, love, love this – from the stomping boots to the statement jewelry. Do you have any idea where to get those lug-soled oxfords? I am weak with desire over them.

brilliant idea to create a unique look (with title, words and pics!) for each season. i’ve only become more focused on personal style (vs. ‘being fashionable’) over the decades. but it’s so rare to find style bloggers who actually focus on style (vs. fashion….snore….) – thank you!

and Parisian Cyborg is the absolute – esp. for you! steph

    Great post.

I used to dress very much like you do when I was thinner but sadly now I’ve gained a lot of weight those clothes are in the back of my closet. :(

Don’t know if I’ll ever be able to wear them again – wondering why I hang onto them, really.

P.S. Love the ModCloth pieces you featured!
