The Week in Pictures: 10.8.10

It all started last week. I received an email from Solestruck, inquiring as to how heavy my workload was. “Slammed. But I can always make room for shoes,” I replied. Before I knew it, I was driving towards the Jupiter that same night. A stack of shoe boxes awaited my arrival on the hotel room bed. And, all just happened to be in my size — 37. Convenient. Ty, the buyer helped me load up my trunk.

The corner of my office has been taken over by shoes ever since. Expect many more new splash pages from me over the next few weeks! Though I have to return the shoes after I shoot them and design the ads, it’s been a blast getting to try on all the different styles.

My absolute favorites so far are the Finsk 252-95’s. I wasn’t kidding when I said that they were ‘architecture for your feet.’ These things are like wearable art.

When we redid the dining room, I gave up the black reproduction Panton chair in my office to put in one of the corners. To take its spot, I borrowed my brother’s hand chair. It totally reminds me of the Addams Family!

My friend Amelia of A is for Arsenic kindly sent me this skull tank and I can’t get enough of it. I wear it under little black blazers and dress it up with scarves. It’s the lightest, softest cotton and beautiful quality. That’s not all — Amelia went all out on the packaging as well. Check it out below!

• I thought that this was a joke but it’s not. The Gap’s new logo. Wow. Really?

• 5 blog naming basics.

• Luxirare has done it again. The bag she just designed for her upcoming travels will leave you speechless. I love the simple shape combined with the excessive use of hardware.

• How cool! Striped chocolate bars by Mary & Matt.

• In 1958, Hunter S. Thompson sent a job request to the editor of the Vancouver Sun. You’ve gotta read this one to believe it! “I didn’t make myself clear to the last man I worked for until after I took the job. It was as if the Marquis de Sade had suddenly found himself working for Billy Graham.” It gets better from there.

Thoughts on Design: Just Be You

It bothers me when designers constantly compare their work to that of others. While in certain instances it’s good to use other people’s work as a yardstick to see if you’re on track, it doesn’t always make sense. Some of the most brilliant campaigns, logos, etc. were produced by an entire team of people. It’s true that there’s often a singular mastermind that provides the catalyst for an idea but from there, so many different hands reach in to bring the final outcome to life.

We’re all our own worst critics. But the danger of constantly comparing yourself to others is that you might just feel too overwhelmed to continue on your own path. If you go through life thinking that you’ll “never be as good as so-and-so,” what purpose is that really serving?

Overall, my work tends to be very simple. I work very much on a grid. I like to keep things clean. Yet, sometimes I wish my work was more layered or complex. But when I think about my interests, my true passion is editorial design. My goal has always been to work at ad agencies. I love the business side of things just as much as I love design. I enjoy the process of working with clients to bring their ideas to life, not just my own.

Sometimes, you just have to block out the noise and follow your passion. It’s a total cliché but you really do have to do what makes you happy (even if you have to do something else as well to pay the bills in the meantime).

I’ve been lucky that I’ve been working nonstop doing design since I finished school. It’s not always the most creative or the most fulfilling but I’ve been able to support myself doing what I love every single day and that matters more to me than always turning out the coolest new thing. ‘Cool’ is relative anyway. Just do what you do and do it well. Fuel your passion. Keep on being you. Be timeless.

What I Wore: 10.2.10

This post is titled Back to School because if I was still in school, this would definitely be my Fall uniform. In reality, after a quick tally, close to seven years in college was plenty….and I’m never goin’ back! Here in Portland, there’s a definite chill in the air and I’m leaning towards outfits that are cozy and comfortable with a slight avant garde edge.

I like stuff that’s slightly weird. Extra straps + wood platforms = yes, please.

I’ve never owned anything from Topshop before until now — I just got this sweater from their UNIQUE line. I find that most of their stuff is overpriced but I decided that this would be my go-to Fall sweater and it’s basic enough that I can wear it tons. Be warned that it does shed a lot so don’t hug me if I’m wearing this!

Joey noticed the I Love You etched into the sidewalk. So cute! Please excuse the slightly grumpenstein look in these photos. That’s what happens when I decide to shoot outfit photos at 8:30 a.m. on a Saturday! Elusive sleep, I covet thee.

The Typofiles #71: Bloomingdale’s

w magazine typofiles typography

Consider me obsessed with the Fall 2010 Bloomingdale’s campaign. We all get sick of the in-your-face advertisements featuring a full page close-up of the latest ‘must have’ item. This campaign breaks up that monotony and feels more engaging, almost like a back to school workbook (the graph paper is the perfect touch).
