The Week in Pictures: 10.1.10 // Leavenworth

Hangin’ with the locals

It’s true. I am obsessed with leherhosen and I live in a Bavarian-themed house. I love dirndls and cuckoo clocks. And, I blame it all on my parents.

See, when I was growing up, we never took family vacations to Disneyland or theme parks. Every single year, we visited the same quaint Bavarian-inspired town outside of Seattle called Leavenworth, Washington. I have so many great memories and the vivid images of the costumed locals, outfitted in their finest European threads, have stuck with me to this day.

Downtown Leavenworth

I hadn’t been to Leavenworth in at least 12 years so when my dad and his girlfriend invited me along over the weekend, I couldn’t say no. We arrived just in time for Autumn Leaf Festival and little details of the town that I remembered as a child were pretty much still intact. The toy store, the local ice cream shoppe and the hotel we stayed at every single year are nearly unchanged to this day.

While we are on this little trip down memory lane, flash back to 1985 during one of my first stays in Leavenworth. Here I am in the old beer garden with my brother and grandma. When I recently inquired as to why I was allowed to leave the house without a shirt on, nobody seemed to have a good answer. The horror!!! The lederhosen were a gift from my parents when they visited Austria in 1983 — my obsession started young! Did you notice the dancing lady and children to the right?!!

On my way…..

Edit: If you’ve never been to Leavenworth, it has an interesting history. Originally a timber and rail town, it was in a steady decline for quite some time until the early 1960s. Fading away, the town tried to save itself by converting the downtown area into a tourist destination with a Bavarian theme. There are beautiful mountains surrounding the area, even giving the illusion of the Alps! It’s now known as “the most outstanding Bavarian village this side of the Atlantic.”

I fell in love with the shutters on this cottage near the the edge of town

Walking along the edge of the cottage in Dries wedges

The Enzian Inn

My favorite hotel in Leavenworth is the Enzian Inn. This time it was booked so we stayed at another hotel down the road. It’s been the place where my family has stayed since the mid-80′s and I always had the best time there. We stopped by for breakfast — check out the cute furniture and the amazing view!

Next door to the Enzian

I found the perfect socks to go with my lederhosen at a local shop

The signs in Leavenworth are the best — no neon allowed. Nearly all of them are wooden. Even mainstream businesses including Starbucks, McDonald’s and Bank of America play along. This Starbucks was below our hotel room and I couldn’t tell if it was real at first but inside it was all standard issue!

We arrived during the weekend of the Autumn Leaf Festival so there was a parade through town.

Scenes from downtown

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I stumbled upon a gingerbread-themed house!

Almost all of the streets have German names

Picture perfect. I love all the little details.

Our hotel had a little private balcony — I loved waking up in the morning and stepping outside to watch people stream through downtown in their best Bavarian finery! Hopefully visits to Leavenworth will be a little more frequent from now on; it was definitely one of the highlights of my childhood. Even today, it still retains that indescribable magic.

Thank you so much for this amazing post! I am from Austria myself and I never would have imagined that such a village exists in the US! It looks really quite authentic I have to say. The no-neon Starbucks sign just cracks me up :-)
Also, I looove your outfit! The dotted stockings and the Dries wedges are just perfect with your lederhosen. I wish people in Austria would style their lederhosen like that! :-)
    Greetings from Vienna!

I just love your blog, because it’s opened my eyes to how great the USA can be – and how beautiful. You really do have everything there and i can’t wait to go back.

  3. Kaz says:

Gorgeous! I want to make a visit – it looks amazing! Ich liebe es!

The Gingerbread themed house (or should I say Haus) is magical.

  4. Alice says:

Wow, that is too bizarre! The town even has an alpine setting. I’m so intrigued by this idea of replicating something in a completely different context. The most fascinating images in this post to me are the ones where the roads show, with the yellow curbs and the huge cars… the little hints of america. Such a contrast, the only way to tell that this is a tourist hotspot in the american continent and not the european.

  5. Anna @ D16 says:

Awesome! This is all so, soooooo very Nubby! The only thing that disappoints me is that not everyone is dressed fabulously. I want more “finest European threads”!

As others have said, isn’t this an amazing country? It’s too bad that LA and NYC get all the international attention, because we really do have a little bit of everything here. I need to see more of the US.

  6. Maja Piraja says:

I’m Norwegian, but I went to the U.S once as a kid and stayed in Leavenworth for a few days – it looks just how I remember it! How fun, I think I have to make my mom dig up the old photo album from that trip :)

  7. Nubby says:

David Airey: Thank you. Sometimes it’s really refreshing to step away from the computer for the weekend and just get out to experience the outside world!

Alex: My dad’s side of the family is Austrian and German! Isn’t it true that women usually don’t wear lederhosen and just wear dirndls? I don’t wear them with the straps though so maybe they look less like a costume. Do any locals even wear them anymore?

Rin: You’ll love it! I can’t ever seem to shut up about the place…

Stephanie: There are little charming places all tucked away….beyond the never ending stretches of highway and tourist traps!

Kaz: I know!! Wouldn’t it be rad if we could each move into a local residence of our choice?!

Alice: I love reading your observations. It me, it is pretty ‘normal’ since I have been there so much!

Anna @ D16: The town was overrun by tourists for the festival but the people in polka bands and most of the shopkeepers and restaurant workers are all dressed up! One morning, I even saw a little boy in red lederhosen with a matching red hat. I wanted to rob him. ;) I think that the only thing missing from Leavenworth is a big ol’ authentic pub and cobblestone streets but still, it’s pretty good.

Maja Piraja: That’s so cool that you visited from another country! It was about a 5 hour drive from where I grew up so it was a very convenient vacation spot.

Jennifer Le Roux: Now my secret’s totally out! This is where the obsession started. ;)

  8. Beth says:

Wow! I wonder what it’s like to actually live there. Must be weird to grow up in a Washington state Bavarian town.

  9. Lindsay says:

Ohh, I love Leavenworth! Did you go to Mapel? (shopmapel.com) – they are my favorite clothing store there. I used to go there when I was a kid – it was a big deal! (Still is – such a cute, graphic town.)

  10. Barbara says:

Hi, I’m also Austrian, and this is simply amazing. It looks as if you stumbled straight into a Tyrolean version of Disneyland. And it’s near Seattle? Who would have thought. :D

About Lederhosen etc…usually men wear them, and women wear dirndls, but in modern folk-inspired clothing, rules aren’t that strict anymore, and there are lederhosen for women.
And yes, sometimes people do wear these clothes – we have an event here in Graz once a year called ‘Aufsteirern’ where the whole city centre is suddenly filled with people in lederhosen and dirndl. I think that even in the countryside, it’s more dress for special days…holidays, election days, whatever. Some people marry in traditional clothing, some in white dresses (or red or blue, or whatever). But it’s really more ‘special day’ clothing these days. (Though I may be wrong, being a city girl.)
My sister and I both received our own ‘grown-up’ dirndl this summer, because our mother thought it would be nice if we had one. It won’t get worn that often, but it’s pretty, and keeping a little bit of tradition alive ain’t all that bad either. :)
    Thanks for this post! :)

  11. Ah, now I’m missing Austria. I had no idea this place existed! Now it’s definitely on my to-visit list.

I love your combinations of folk dress and modern clothing. The last shot, with the dirndl and Avant Garde necklace, is particularly perfect.

  12. Lynn says:

Last year we went right around Christmas, just after a snow storm and took a sleigh ride in the snow. It was SO MUCH FUN! Definitely try to get there when it snows. there is something so magical about a sleigh ride in the snow! plus the hot cocoa after is really tasty!

  13. Jenn says:

What an awesome picture post about Leavenworth! This definitely is going on my bucket list of places I need to visit. Your outfits are perfect like always and the pictures are amazing. Thanks for sharing, it totally made my week.

  14. Annastasia says:

This is amazing! It reminds me so much of Solvang, a danish-style town in California I used to visit when I was little. They’re about to celebrate their centennial, and it would be fantastic to go visit again.

  15. kC says:

It’s just like Frankenmuth!! http://www.frankenmuth.org/ this little gem is nearby my home and it’s a fun place to visit! We’ve actually been talking about spending a weekend there since it’s been a few years since we last went. If you ever find yourself in Michigan I recommend taking a stop at Frankenmuth.

*haha* These pictures made my German heart smiling ♥

This town is so cute and except the food everything looks pretty Bavarian / Austrian. Even
the environment really does look like Bavarian forrests.

    Nice Blog! ♥

    Liebs Grüßli ♥ Glitzerpony
