The Typofiles #64: Maidenform

maidenform i dreamed

Perhaps the longest running print ad campaign in history (1949 to 1969), Maidenform bras were featured alongside the tagline “I Dreamed I….in my Maidenform bra.”

The activities highlighted in the campaign were fairly ordinary (at least in the beginning), but the accompanying imagery was much more intriguing. My favorite ad from this epic series is “I dreamed I was a private eye in my Maidenform Bra.” It’s got a graphic, pop sensibility — and the dangling handcuffs are a nice touch!

The entire set of The Typofiles can be viewed here.

I love this ad. Agreed about the handcuffs – and the little Sherlock Holmes cap.

I have always loved 40′s-60′s era ads and this one has always been one of my favorites. The dangling handcuffs are an awesome touch but get a load of that cone bra, haha.

Yay! My favorite one is circus themed. Super cute. Fun fact: Dare Wright, who wrote and photographed The Lonely Doll and the other Edith books modeled in one of these ads, “I dreamed I had a screen test in my maidenform bra.”

This would be a fitting ad for The Conservatory. ;-)

I love the ad, but that bra looks so uncomfortable! I forget where I was reading recently, where the blogger was talking about a pretty mysoginistic Playboy article that talked about the evolution of the female figure due to what men want (blarg), but she also talked about the evolution of bras and boobie style, from the pointy everyday madonna look like the one above (wearing that must have made it look like you had two rockets strapped to your chest!) to the rounder flatter style today – its interesting that even when we look back and think that talking about underwear and bras and stuff was so taboo, even back then it was so stylised and designed for fashion!
