Welcome to The Week in Pictures! I was having some major site issues over the last few days but thanks to the web ninjas known as Star and John C. Worsley, everything should be smooth sailing!

I have the best friends – Kristin Cofer always sends me the cutest little packages. This one came complete with a gorgeous vintage dress and customized letterhead. Adore her.

It cracks me up that there’s always a Mystery Machine parked right around the corner from my house. Scoobydoobydoooooooo! Haha.

Joey and I wanted to go out the other night but our local bar didn’t allow drinks outside at the picnic tables so we waltzed in with Rocky. Nobody seemed to care. It was his first time at a bar but don’t fret…he’s 21 in dog years!

Type and lips and studs, oh my! These are a few of my favorite things. I’m not big on fancy jewelry at all. I prefer red, black and white along with piles of acrylic.

Last Friday, I volunteered to do portfolio reviews at PNCA and it was an enlightening experience in part because it was my first time sitting on the other side of the table since graduating two years ago. I distinctly remember what it was like and how nervous I was. I never want to be the Simon Cowell of portfolio reviews – design is so personal and while it’s important to be honest, staying constructive and providing advice that is legitimately helpful goes a long way.

I adore the signs in my neighborhood.

I saw the latest issue of O yesterday while in line at the grocery store and thought, “Ah, why the hell not?” Someone gave me a copy probably 8 years ago and it had some of the cleanest, most crisp editorial design at the time. Inspiration is lurking everywhere! The mag and these shoes paired together practically scream “SPRING!”

Readers, do you have any awesome weekend plans?

I love love love the pyramid studded bracelet/cuff! & Oprah! oh man I think she’s amazing! One of the raddest comments someone ever gave me about my work once was ‘You’re like the punk rock Oprah!’ :) !

As for the weekend I’m going record rummaging!

21 in dog years! Hehe so cute! Shouldn’t there be a Rocky fan club? I’d like to be a member.

My week is work, marketing assignments, 30rock, signing up for a project management qualification, brunch and bbqs.

Eeeek portfolio reviews! I’ve been having some of those at my uni, i have one next week with Adrian Shaughnessy!! This time we have to pretend it’s like a job interview. I’m scared!
Those people are lucky to have ones with you :)

  4. I love the 10th Anniversary issue of O Magazine, too! I used to feel kinda lame for loving magazines so goddamn much, but I’ve realized that they’re unparalleled sources of visual inspiration.

Oh, and Oprah rocks my socks. Forevs.

I get that you’re saying you don’t want to be unnecessarily mean when doing reviews — a bad review like that can really stomp someone’s creativity.

However, I used to actually study music with an emphasis on vocal performance. Simon Cowell has a reputation, but I’ve rarely seen him be mean: his critiques have made me think that he’s the only judge AI has had who has much technical knowledge about singing. He’s almost always, for better or worse, exactly right on about a contestant.

Loving the jewelry collection, the Mystery Machine, and of course, ROCKY! :D

I think I was in your neighborhood yesterday, if that Smokey’s Tavern sign is correct:) This is my first time commenting, and I just wanted to say that since moving to Portland last year, I am always stoked to check this site and see pictures of things around town and near my new neighborhood (I live a few blocks east of the Doug Fir). This is such a fun city to explore, I’m sure you know this better than I do :) Enjoy the spring weather, my dear.

I am so envious of your red cross collection. You should make a blog post about some of your favorite websites for nick nacks/home decor. I am drooling over your pencil cup!

  8. Angeliska says:

I saw that Mystery Machine bus around East Austin the other night! I wonder what the story is? A Scooby-Doo band on tour, or some kooky promo?
Man, I love those old signs! It’s amazing how design and type from those eras can instantly evoke a full sense of a bygone time. I can almost smell the smoke and stale beer from Smokey’s Tavern, and the peroxide from Ivan’s! Great photos, Nubby!

  9. Nubby says:

Angeliska: Perhaps! I love it that people take that much time to customize their dirty old vans! Smokey’s is a total dive and that’s putting it nicely. Though if I was pushing 60 and Hamm’s was my beer of choice, I’d so be there. Ivan himself is pretty cute. He’s 79 (!!!) and started cutting hair in his little shop back in the 60s!
