The Week in Pictures: 3.26.10

I spent most of my week with the Nemo HQ crew which was especially good because the boys indulged me with Journey tunes two days in a row. This is the first time in a long while that I can say that I’m truly excited about all the projects I’m working on and though tired, I am endlessly inspired.

My daily urban uniform tends to be pretty basic and usually revolves around a black palette. I’ve been working at agencies around town a lot lately and semi-early mornings call for streamlined, pre-planned outfits. Black skinny jeans, fitted shirt, tiny studded belt, wedges, statement necklace and oversized black cardigan (not shown) are my staples.

I am embarrassed to admit that I have yet to read this classic. Have you? What did you think?

I was recently inspired by Amelia Arsenic’s daily documentation of her looks and I, too remember the camgirls that populated the internet 10+ years ago. It only takes a few seconds to get a snap and it’s always fun to look back.

I love shoes and I love Oprah. I was working on a type-based project today and needed content. Instead of reaching for the good ol’ lorem ipsum, I pulled up some inspiring Oprah quotes. I have a soft spot for anyone that’s self-made and she is a shining example. The shoes are the Jeffrey Campbell Clinics that I had on backorder for a million years. Find yours over at Solestruck.
P.S. I’ll be a featured speaker at the CRAVE Portland business chat this Sunday. Here is some more information about the event taken from the CRAVE website:

Oh, those gorgeous Clinics. They make my heart go pitter-pat.

I LOVE your shoes. If they made them in a “sensible” height, I’d be sure to buy them.

Sally: Kinda extreme, but I think that’s why I like them. Shockingly walkable, considering the weird angles and height, too!
Auntie Nubs: You mean a ‘cougar height?’

I love Oprah too. I sometimes feel overwhelmed though when I think of all that self made people have accomplished. Makes me feel like I should not be sitting for a minute…need to work work work to get there. ha

I forget if I ever said this, but I love the white nails. They’re perfect for a black-heavy outfit.

I read No Logo in college and I loved it. Naomi Klein came to my school that year too and I loved her. It totally made me think differently about things. I’m not anti-logo, but I still like the message that she puts out there.

No Logo was a good read, but has its faults. While I do agree with the debate against branding in the sense that corporate branding is an immediate support of capitalism and globalization, I find this negative outlook on branding to often go a bit too far. These negative aspects fall within a small category of branding projects that a designer or strategist will encounter. Depending on your own thoughts on these issues explained by Klein amongst many others, you as the designer or strategist can make your own decisions as to what types of clients to work with. A cultivator of brand identity can work within the field of branding their entire life without ever doing work for a large corporation, and instead focusing on local businesses, non-profits and other clients that lack such titanic natures. A designer or strategist can also dedicate their lives to using their knowledge and skills to re-define these large corporations, insisting that they use their power to initiate good within our society. An excellent example of a major corporation’s brand being put to good use is Pepsi’s 2010 Superbowl campaign… oh wait, they didn’t have one! This is because they decided to put all of the money they would have spent on Superbowl ads* into fostering a viral campaign (Pespi Refresh Project) aiming to bring awareness to non-profit organizations and individuals dedicating their lives and services to the betterment of society. I find Pepsi, a brand that has long been critiqued by people such as Klein, to be setting a great example of the potential these major corporations such as Nike, Walmart, and Starbucks have to put their well established power, colossal existence, vast consumer following, and brand identity to good use. If every major conglomerate were to follow this concept, the world could actually be subject to amazing change, and the brand, in fact, would benefit.

I love that you go with what you like, regardless of what anyone says. Oprah is awesome, and a total inspiration to women trying to be successes on their own! By the way, what font are you using for the subheads (i.e. Black on Black)? Lemmie guess again…Univers 39 Condensed? Hmm…..Please answer!

Nubby, I don’t mean to alarm you but in your camgirl photos there is a rather naked lady standing behind you! I think she’s trying to get in on the camgirl action.

Hey Nubby, I understand, well I think it appears to be that you like the design modern. I am and ID student and I am designing a modern house, but I am not sure what type of modern I would like to design. I was thinking of Mid Century. Do you know of places that have modern furniture or inspiration?
It would help a ton!
P.s. I love your style (:

unrelated to this post, but – helvetica cookie cutters!
I’m sure you’ve seen them already, but just in case you hadn’t…

Jason Resch: Gimme. Missed you last night. Hope you had fun!
matt manos: Thanks for the spirited overview, I am definitely looking forward to reading No Logo now.
Steph-Knee: That’s Twiggy. I used to dress her up but got sick of sharing my wardrobe. She’s been happily naked for a few years now!
Cait: I don’t really read any modern design or architecture blogs but a good place to start might be Design Sponge or Decor8…if you visit them and check their recommended links, I am sure you’ll find something in this area.

Hi Nubby — I used to post Nubbyish things to your Livejournal back in the day whenever I used to find them, but it’s been a long long time now (and I used a diff name back then but don’t want to be traced to it…) Anyway, saw these and instantly thought of you first, at the OAKNYC site, go check out their new arrivals! Stripey wedges by Mini for Many (new juniorsy line for Minimarket from Sweden…)

PS. I totally bought that forever21 necklace after seeing it on you, LOVE it!

I’ve never even heard on no logo, it looks good but it will be interesting to read now that i’m studying brands this semester. Those clinics rock my socks off.

Insomnia: Agreed. And everything always matches. Hee.
WPZ: Thanks for stopping by! I just searched out those shoes and discovered a total goldmine of amazing wedges on the OAK site. Love it all.
Biana: I love it. Love, love, love. That woman is endlessly inspiring.
amanda: The top is Forever 21 but is about a year old. Glad you got the necklace – it adds major yet understated bling to everything!

So not going to lie, I met one of my best online pals via a cam portal about ten years ago! Webcams need a comeback, big time.
Oh, late 90′s personal sites with watchable cams of people sitting around their desks doing nothing, how far we’ve come!
