The Week in Pictures: 1.15.10

Wow, what a week! I finally got to see Cool as Ice again which is truly my favorite movie ever. One of my 2010 resolutions was to watch more movies because I’ve barely seen any in my lifetime and I’m trying to make up for lost time. Though Cool as Ice was the highlight, I also saw The Germs biographical film What We Do Is Secret and Mary Poppins back-to-back. Not bad at all.
Trips to Stumptown, design collaborations, grilled cheese sandwiches, deep discussions about Def Leppard, soldering, Smirnoff Ice, photo booths, homemade enchiladas, emails from all of my best friends in New York in one day and inspirational meetings rounded out the mix. 2010 is turning out to be the best, most fulfilling year ever. Onwards and upwards!

White Noise. The white room at Wolfgang Manor needs a few finishing touches….but it’s almost there. Almost.

It’s Not What You Think. On Tuesday, I went out to breakfast with two of my longtime friends, Brent and Katie. I was trying to explain to Brent why I was wearing a promise ring (because let’s face it, at 28 I am not making any promises of the sort!) and realized that with the way I was showing it off, the restaurant patrons might think he’d given it to me. At that point, we played it up for the cameras. Thanks to Brent for always being a good sport!

POP. Words cannot describe how excited I was when a package of watches showed up for a collaboration between POP magazine and Swatch. My brother shot some amazing photos and I can’t wait to show you the results!

Fashion Notebook Returns. For the last 10+ years, I’ve kept an oversized sketchbook and filled the pages with fashion-related images that are mostly arranged by color. Over the last few weeks I’ve finished a few new pages and will be posting them sporadically. You can see all of the past Fashion Notebook scans here.

Fight! On Wednesday, I had lunch with one of my long time mentors, Dave Allen of Portland Agency Fight. He’s always been a big fan of social media and really supported my blogging vision in the early days. He also used to be in a post-punk band that you might recognize which only adds to his coolness.

Stumptown. Though I don’t enjoy strong coffee, I love the downtown location of Stumptown Coffee. It has that perfect Portland-esque feel and the people watching is beyond good.

Ring Finger. When Jewelry Art Designs offered to send me a piece of jewelry of my choice, I couldn’t resist. I am a total minimalist at heart but am trying to step it up in the new year. Usually though, I can never find anything that’s simple enough to not be clunky when I am spending 10+ hours a day on the computer. Rings tend to get in the way of my work and become more of an annoyance than a fashion statement. Luckily, I was able to find this cute yet very low profile ring engraved with LOVE and haven’t taken it off since. Maybe, just maybe this is my turning point towards wearing more jewelry in general. Plus, it’s a great reminder to always spread the love, love, love.

Until Next Week,

I had almost the same ring, except for the engraving, that I wore without taking it off for 7 years. I found it at home, between some papers, few nights before I left my country for good.
This way it always reminded me to not forget my roots.

Insomnia: Great story. I think mine is reminding me to be more present, more in the moment and more forgiving.

Nubby, DAVE ALLEN IS ONE OF YOUR MENTORS? My heart is beating just a little bit faster right now! I had no idea he was a graphic designer or lived in Portland! xoxoxoxoxo

Kristin: Yes, we used to work at Nemo together here in Portland. He was the director of social media-related stuff at the time and we bonded over being total blogging fanatics. He is amazing!

Brilliant! I love Gang of Four!

Nubby, you have the best energy (and *ahem* blog) around! You totally deserve all the success that has come your way. Can you believe that we’re only halfway through January, and you’re already on top of the world?! Let’s just see what the next 11 months bring to Ms. Twiglet!

Watch the documentary about Andy Goldsworthy called Rivers and Tides. It’s minimalist, expressive, soulful and inspired and I really think you will love it.

The ring is adorable & I love love love Stumptown. Have you been to the one in Seattle? I did a cupping there before which was really neat. xo

Nubby that ring is beautiful! I’m gonna have to check out the rest of their line.. I wear one that’s in a similar style that says ‘happiness’.
The Germs biopic is pretty cool! And I adore Mary Poppins and friend and I were only talking about this movie the other day. I gotta watch it again.
I adore the ‘good luck’ on the coffee saucer! So cute!
I love your photo posts. Thanks for sharing. xo

PS- The heart locked ribbon ring over at Jewelry Art is super cool.

That love ring is great. I have a hard time wearing jewelry, too. I always mean to and then never do. I’m glad you found something that worked for you.

Cool As Ice is still one of my favourite cheesy movies. Oh Vanilla Ice.

Didn’t you meet Vanilla Ice? It seems in the foggy recesses of my mind I remember you mentioning it.

Oooh, did you like What We Do is Secret? I’ve been thinking of Netflixing it but I’m not a super-huge Germs fan, so I dunno.
Love your nailpolish!

Lola: You are too sweet, thank you very much. <3
Liz: Never have but would love to!
Bianca: Thanks, I am totally digging the ring….I think I’ve been wearing it for a week straight now which is unheard of for me! And The Germs film is totally super awesome.
Trisha: Thanks, it’s nothing I ever gave much thought to but now I am totally changing my mind about wearing rings. They add that perfect girly finishing touch!
Carly: I know, it doesn’t get any better than Mr. Ice.
Auntie Nubs: Carey, Joe, The Big Gay Wizard and I met him in 1998 I think. I have his autograph somewhere. He was the nicest guy and hung out with us by his tour bus after the show.
Michelle: I knew nothing about The Germs but totally loved it. I totally recommend it!

What type of glue do you use for your fashion book? Your magazine clippings look so smooth; mine always end up lumpy and permanently damp looking. Thanks!

I wish I had the confidence and coordination to have a white room, someone (probably me) would spill red kool aid within the first week.

Beautiful photos! All the little details you photograph really are so often overlooked.
With all this mention of rings, if you dont mind me asking… Is Lee still around?

Cadah: Just your basic, standard washable glue stick like little kids use! I use the same when I collage on wood for art, too.
True Tech: It definitely looks dirtier in person; white floors are a pain to keep clean!

First, you’re friends with one of the Gang of Four?! That’s totally rad.
Second, I LOVE your ring. Gorgeous.
Third, that Jimi art is stunning. Perfect for a white room. I love it.
