The Flat Iron Diaries

I am one of those people with fairly straight hair, but sometimes, fairly straight just won’t cut it. There are times where I want my hair to look perfectly sleek and in those moments, I reach for my flat iron.

Unfortunately, while I was vacationing in Florida back in November, my flat iron died quite suddenly. It’s not something that I would call an absolute necessity so I put off purchasing a new one when I returned home. But, the universe has an odd way of coming through when we are in need.

After being home for about a week, my phone rang one morning and since it wasn’t a number that I recognized, I almost didn’t answer. But, I am so glad I did. Turns out that it was one of my long-time advertisers, Misikko. The owner had just checked out my blog and noticed that I had really long hair. He wondered if I would be interested in trying out one of their professional flat irons and I immediately obliged.

I was super excited at the prospect because I had already tried out one of the Misikko flat irons over the summer while staying with Gala in New York. I already knew that they were compact, of nice quality and worked well so I was glad to finally have one of my own.

Misikko sent me the Hana model, which is 1 inch, black and works super fast. It literally takes a minute or less to heat up and is the best straightening iron I’ve tried to date, due in part to the high quality ceramic plates. One of the best features on this model are the 8 foot long cord (!!) and the accompanying heat proof silicone mat. The mat is nice, especially if you set your iron on a counter or floor to heat up. The heat on the iron is adjustable from 140 – 450° F and I usually keep it pretty high since I have fairly healthy hair.

Though I don’t use an iron every day, it’s a great tool to have around when you want that extra polished edge. I am by no means a flat iron expert, but I’ve tried quite a few and I prefer the compact size, looks and power of the Hana over other models I’ve tried. Thanks, Misikko!

Seriously, your brother’s photography is out of hand. The first one looks straight out of a beauty editorial.

(I leave flat ironing my hair to the pros!)

Do you color your hair? If so, what do you use/where do you go?

I received a Misikko straightener to review a couple years ago and I dropped it so many times one of the plates detached. I wish I knew how to repair it, because their flat irons are fantastic.

I’m looking for a new flat iron and you make that one sound great! Too bad it’s a little out of my price range. My hair is all over the place (long, curly, poofs in the rain, the works) so I need something a little heavy duty. Beautiful pictures :)

mary: Thanks, sometimes I have to switch up the blacks and grays a bit.

verhext: Thanks, love! Your blog and everything else you do is super duper awesome. If I had curly hair, I’d probably leave it to the pros as well.

Liz: Thanks; picked up the limited edition MAC Mineralize eyeshadow do in Blue Sorcery and am in love.

Kamela: Thank you!

Janine: I dye my hair black every few months. I use Revlon ColorSilk and it’s the one that’s a natural black (instead of blue black). Costs about $3.00 at Target!

Tiffany: Good luck with finding a flat iron that suits your needs; sounds like we have much different hair. Heavier duty in your case is probably a good idea!

i didn’t realize you dyed your hair black! Haha. Kinda silly of me, but, black hair-dye users unite!

That hair iron looks intense and rad! I have this like baby baby baby one, which I think is for most people to use on their bangs, but since I have such short, thin hair, I get away with it on my entire head.

super rad :D

Wow your hair is super healthy looking & gorgeous! I used to dye my hair but now I’m trying the natural healthy look lol.. plus my natural hair color is black so I figured I don’t need to change it.

there are two types of black hair dyes.. those with the blue base and those with the black base. I used to ALWAYS dye my hair black and learned the hard way the first time i did it that if you don’t look at the colors on the side of the box, you will end up with grandma black hair (VERY VERY BLUE)

Red black is def. the way to go.. I;ve given up on the black hair (unless i grow it long again) When its short it looks like a helmet on me. I now get my hair professionally dyed and cut and i LOVE LOVE LOVE my hairdress.. I met her when I did some modeling a few years ago.. I was one of her models for a runway show

I’ve been dying to get a new hair straightner and the 8 foot cord put this one over the edge. WOW! Finally, something to get excited about.

I actually just ordered a Misikko iron a few weeks ago! Coincidentally, It’s a hana! Though not the fancy Elite one…just the professional…but oh dear do I love it!! It used to take me about 15-20 mins to straighten my hair and I had to clip it up in sections because it’s so thick, but I leave it all down and it takes about half the time! Horray! :)

lindsay: I agree about the dyes. I wouldn’t use blue black ever again unless I wanted to be goth or look extra dead.

Natalie / Fashion Intel: The cord is really nice quality too, not the kind that gets all tangled like on some of the cheaper models out there.

Caitlin: I have noticed that it takes half the time to do my hair also. I used to always have cheaper irons, not realizing that there was a difference. Now I know better.

Lovely eye makeup!

Just out of curiosity, what do you like to use as a heat protector on your hair when you flat iron?

I only ask because I’m a hair stylist, and also I’m being nosey… heehee

In case the Misikko reps are checking back in on this post…it worked! Inspired by this post, I called Misikko yesterday–a very helpful phone rep helped me determine best flat iron for me. I ordered online yesterday afternoon and it has ALREADY been delivered to my doorstep. I’m pretty sure they now have a customer for life!

p.s. Love your site in general!
