Collage on paper, 2007

Another crazy busy week bites the dust! I’ve been keeping the Nemo crew company, visiting friends old and new and trying to figure out what to do for Halloween here in Portland. Any ideas?

Fat & Tasty. Auntie Nubs and her friend whisked me away for breakfast on Monday morning at a quaint café called…Fat Albert’s. I said yes to whipped cream on the top of my hot chocolate. Yum!

Stacked. I had the realization that the three notebooks I carry daily (Helvetica Moleskine, Moleskine limited edition daily planner and Miquelrius notebook) are a happy and well-matched little family.

Heart. A cute coffee shop just opened up in Portland called Heart. The Nemo boys took me over to check it out yesterday and it was like entering the very sophisticated lab of a mad scientist. Black walls, minimal decor and tons of mysterious equipment for coffee making filled the space. Perfection.

Mystery Rock. Last night I went to a bar with my friend Hugh and there was a rock in my way….that wouldn’t budge. It was attached to the counter. No elbow resting allowed, obviously. Haha.

Nuumbers. The day before I left for New York back in August, my brother surprised me with a stack of vintage gas station signs. This number seven resides in my matte black bedroom. Pretty sweet.

Readers: What are your Halloween plans? What are you going as? I’ll probably be a nurse (for the millionth time) since I already have everything I need!

I love the vintage gas station sign, and that your brother surprised you!
As for Halloween, fun with friends, and the current idea is to be a bumblebee, mostly so I can wear my black tutu. :)

  2. Liz says:

Those gasoline numbers are pretty epic. And so is your brother for being thoughtful so often! You should post a photo of you two together someday ;)

As for Halloween, you made the cutest Minnie Mouse you should be her again! Unless it was just last year that you wore that, but srsly. So adorable. My boy and I are going as Aladdin and Jasmine haha. My kick-ass fashion designer friend is making out costumes from scratch! We’re excited.

  3. Shana says:

I will most likely be Heromine Granger again because I have the costume already and the hair is a sinch…just brush out my curly hair and I have her frizzies! Plus the school girl gear is fairly comfortable for a night on the town. :)

  4. Lola says:

So do you only wear black, white and red? I was thinking of copy-catting this, but then I wouldn’t be able to wear the new brown frye boots that I bought…You have epic style that I want to rock at my design school (Minneapolis College of Art and Design)!

I had planed on spending the night with some friends but they’re all sick with the flu :( So I’m staying home to hand out treats, and watch some movies. Tower of Terror is first on my list ^^

But I’m still going to dress up! Even if I am only answering the door. I took inspiration from Emilie Autumn and have created a ‘whimsical plague rat’ out fit, with black bloomers, striped stocking with candies on them, and some mouse ears which a friend made for me :)

    Hi Nubby!

Beautiful and thoughtful pictures, as always.

I’m a bit under the weather at the moment, but hopefully I’ll be up to snuff tomorrow. My costume will be a Pink Slip. So basically, I’ll throw on a pink slip, a pair of heels, and spend the evening telling people they’re fired!

There’s a movie sandwich tomorrow starting at 7.30 at the Clinton St. Theater: Rocky Horror / Repo! The Genetic Opera / Rocky Horror. If all goes well, I’ll be there dressed as a circus girl!

OMG! it’s sooo nice to know that I’m not the only person walking around with a miquelrius notebook in my bag. I started using them in high school as my sketchbook and i’ve tried to ween myself off of them to go bigger but I can’t help it. Something about them that I can’t get over…..

  9. On my Epic Road Trip of ’07, I stumbled upon a glorious petrol station sign (somewhere in Iowa, I think?). It was a green and yellow star-burst shape, about 5 feet in diameter, just lying there on the ground. I wanted it so badly, but the station attendant told me it wasn’t for sale. So I stole it. Kidding! But I wanted to. Oh, how I wanted to.

What a darling family of notebooks! I’ll be a Star Fleet science officer, complete with comm badge, phaser (in awesome homemade utility belt with holster), and black pants tucked into black boots.

  11. Lisa says:

I’m going as a Russian cosmonaut. Actually to get really specific I’m going as Valentina Tereshkova the first woman in space. I have “space” pants and made myself mission patches. I’m not sure anyone will know who or what I am, but it makes me happy.

I love the gas station numbers. What a neat idea!

  12. Nubby says:

Liz: Yes, last year was Minnie Mouse. The year before, I was Steve Perry from Journey and people were so freaked out that I had to do something cute as a follow-up! Haha.

Lola: Did you go for it?? Heehee. I used to wear loads of red but am feeling much more minimal these days. 10 years of red accents has made me want to change things up as of late!

amanda: I stumbled upon the notebooks at Spoonbill & Sugartown in Brooklyn a few years back and love love love them!

Alexandra Franzen: Oooooh. The one that got away….

Lisa: That is super cool that you came up with such a unique costume concept (unlike me, who usually goes as a nurse, Minnie Mouse, candy striper, etc!)

    aNGEL: Amazing. Photographic evidence, please!

    J.: Thank you!
