• Smashing Magazine has written one of my favorite design-related posts ever called Lessons From Swiss Style Graphic Design.
• Steve Pavlina teaches us how to network with busy people and if that wasn’t enough information to absorb, here’s part two!
• 50 fresh portfolio websites for your inspiration.
• Aerial Typography: British researcher Rachel Young has compiled a New York alphabet using Google Maps.
• Qwitter will notify you when someone stops following you on Twitter and better yet, it tells you after which tweet you were unfriended!
• Get a glimpse inside the uncomfortable (and in my opinion, downright creepy) world of child beauty pageants through the lens of photographer Susan Anderson (via kottke).
• 100 years of design manifestos.
• Young creatives keep showing up in Portland, but they should have done their research first because times are tough (via Pampelmoose).
• A quick reminder on why cheap logos aren’t work the cost.
• Could you live without money? Daniel Suelo is a modern day cave man living in Utah who has survived on zero dollars a day for nearly 10 years. He claims that “When I lived with money, I was always lacking. Money represents lack. Money represents things in the past (debt) and things in the future (credit), but money never represents what is present.”

Portland is such a vibrant city… I live about 5 hours south of it in Oregon and visiting it is always a highlight of my year, you’re so lucky to live there… Great post as always!

Congrats on getting featured on POP!
Great links as usual but not so hyped on Qwitter. I think it inhibits people when they focus on rejection. People will follow or unfollow at will but I don’t think it should change how you tweet.

Oh my god!!! Those little girls are wearing more makeup that irish dancers the same age! (I’m an irish dancer, and let me tell you, we wear lots and lots of makeup. The amount (of makeup) usually increase as the girls get older.

That article on Daniel Suelo was excellent! Very thought provoking, reminded me a little bit of “Into the Wild”
I think my favorite link this week is the site screencrave.com They’ve been keeping up to date with Comic Con and providing great information on everything from the new “Alice in Wonderland” Tim Burton trailer to all the news about “Avatar”, the new James Cameron film that’s supposed to change the look of CGI. I have my moments of comic book geekiness =)

The mothers of little pageant princesses seem to be very domineering. I had one come into work a few months ago, (I work at a bridal salon currently) & she was AWFUL to her two little girls.

Hi Nubby Beautiful!
I had to say, because I’ve never mentioned it but it is SO TRUE. You always have the BEST links. At least for me + my loverboy. As a young designer + aspiring businesswoman they inspire me, educate me, delight me and motivate me!! Almost every week I go through ALL of them and feel this way so I wanted to finally say something!
Be proud of yourself girlie!

Wow, those photos of the child beauty pageants are incredibly creepy. I don’t know why anyone would want their children participating in something like that. *shudder*
Also, I really enjoyed the Daniel Suelo story. Certainly gives us a lot to think about anyway.
Thanks for the great links (as usual)!

I was so confused for a second there!
The ‘Qwitter’ I know about is related to quitting smoking!

I wonder how many others are using the word ‘qwitter’ …?

I enjoy the networking don’ts of Steve Pavlina, but I kind of wished he would have offered more insight into what works. Felt a little cheated on that. Great links altogether.

It ain’t just cheap logos that aren’t worth the money – has anyone else seen the new logo for the city of Melbourne, Australia? I can’t believe they spent Australian$240 000 on that piece of crap design instead of looking after the things that really need to be done (and that 240 000 doesn’t even include the cost of replacing everything like street signs etc), like looking after it’s infrastructure and it’s people.

Great links this week! I love the article on Daniel Suelo. The child beauty pageant pictures are so disgusting and saddening. It just makes me so angry that any parent would do this to their child, it’s like they want to prostitute their daughters. MESSED UP.

It saddens me that you would promote the work of someone like Steve Pavlina. He’s an absolute charlatan, akin to a salesman on an informercial or a psychic at a state fair. The personal growth and self-help industry is filled with people who have an over-abundance of charisma and absolutely no professional credentials. His whole blog is a fallacy, and in the field of logic, this fallacy is called The Appeal to Unqualified Authority. It occurs when an argument from a supposed authority lacks all credibility.
Not only does Steve have a criminal background, but he’s recently made the announcement that he’s decided to live a polyamorous lifestyle in a very public way. Only time will tell how that decision will effect his young children, whom he’s obviously too selfish to consider. By forwarding his link, you’re ensuring that he remains financially secure and therefore able to continue spewing out gems like this, “Do you have a clue what it’s like to have a personal development expert and a psychic medium as your parents?” (yes, his wife claims to be a psychic medium and intuitive counselor, whatever that bs means). He also doesn’t allow any comments on his blog…why do you think that is?
And please be certain of this: anyone who is saying that they are financially supporting themselves and living a lavish lifestyle solely on the finances reaped from running a website is flat out LYING. There are absolutely other factors involved in how these people acquire their money, and promoting an unattainable fantasy world to impressionable people is deceitful.
The fact that Steve constantly says that he earns money without working is not only obnoxious, but it’s a glorified form of reality manipulation. Jane Roberts, the woman responsible for the Seth books, is a good example of someone who made large amounts of money from a following of easily duped people. Except she took the idea of reality manipulation and sold it under the guise of quantum physics (which of course sounds more legitimate to the average joe).
In fact, Jane is what you would get if you combined the ideas of Steve and his wife Erin. I believe that to be too much of a coincidence to ignore. From my educated standpoint, it seems that they’ve both read many personal development books, and after failing in the computer gaming industry, decided that being fraudulent in life is much easier than making an honest effort. So now they woo the masses with foreign concepts, publish money-making ads filled with unrelated content on their blog, and beg for donations.
I don’t mean to sound harsh and I’m certainly not upset with you. But I’m passionate about the truth, so when I see a blatant lie being passed off as gospel, I feel compelled to raise my voice in dissonance. Young girls read your website and look up to you…try to be more cognizant about how you wield that power.

I’ve read some Steve Pavlina and while I don’t know nearly as much about his personal life as Lisa Ann, I have enjoyed several of his articles and got a lot out of his podcast when I used to subscribe to it.

Hey Sean ~
The reasons why you mentioned reading Steve’s blog are the same reasons why I wanted to investigate him further. I was also enamored with him at first. What a great life! And I can have one too? Sign me up! But the deeper I dug, the more dirt I found. In this digital age of super-connectedness, I feel we have an extra responsibility to others. We all turn to the internet for our information, so we need to ensure that what we promote is worth standing behind.

I subscribe to smashing’s rss feed and have been fawning over that Swiss Style article hardcore. The part about the guy responsible for the Swiss use of grid systems naming them “Design Programs” is kind of blowing my mind since I’m always looking for interesting examples of integration. Nice find
