Coilhouse Magazine: Issue 3 Test Spread
I’ve needed some more editorial-based work for my design portfolio and Coilhouse Magazine was gracious enough to let me do a try-out of one of their articles. Coilhouse is known for having a certain flair to its pages so I added a combination of transparent overlays and bold flourishes while making the quotes playfully curve around their subjects.

I had so much fun doing this layout and though I’ve worked with Coilhouse previously (I designed their 2009 media kit and ad grid), I hope to do some editorial-based work for them in the future!
Note: This layout wasn’t included in the magazine; Courtney Riot had design honors and did an amazing job bringing the pages to life. Buy your copy of Issue 3 in the Coilhouse Shop.

Coilhouse always looks like the COOLEST magazine ever. And I must say, Ms. Nubby, you always seem to do such a great job of working with your client’s style. This work fits colihouse to a tee, yet you never lose track of the Nubby Twiglet voice. Such a wonderful balancing act!

Love the layouts, and especially the typeface. Did you use script ornaments from the typeface or an Illustrator brush? I’ve been trying to make Illustrator brushes like that, but it’s rather difficult. Any advice or direction?

do you use photoshop or illustrator to curve the quotes like that? it looks awesome.. I’ve never been able to successfully do it with photoshop!

Belinda: All of the type stuff you see is done in Illustrator so the curves can be adjusted.

What Illustrator brushes did you use? Are they commercial or did you make them? If you made them, how do you do it? I’ve been admiring this type of swirls for quite some time. Thanks
