Fabiana Perina- I honestly think the reason Canadians have more clothing than Americans is because we HAVE to buy more cloths (more money) because we have such a large range of seasons.
Winter coats are super expensive. Trust me. I know

Average Canadians spend from three to four times more on clothing than average Americans (according to Statistics Canada)...

Who would have thought so?

I found several of these links interesting. Buamai's pictures are truly inspiring, while the sociological study leaves me thinking. I've always assumed that we spent more money on gadjets and entertainment, but I was overlooking the obvious necessity of a roof over our heads.

Oh, MJ... He's more than just a supernova.

Great post, Nubby. : ]

I was just going to add on Bridget's comment and mention that I'm very pale, something that people of Chinese descent (mostly my parents' friends) have commented on since I was a little girl. I get compliments about my paleness on the street here in Taipei. There's actually a saying in Chinese that goes "white hides three ugly things." I guess that's a good thing... ha ha! It's ironic because I think I look sickly and am a big fan of bronzing powder and blush!

Every single link you have on here is so informative and interesting. The paycheck wheel and the BBC article on skin whitening are esp. interesting. I live in Taiwan, and skin whitening is a huge thing here, basically the equivalent of the shelves of self-tanning products back in the US. I was just going through a drugstore circular and half of the skin care products all promise whiter, "brighter" skin. None of them really work (which is one of the reasons I believe MJ really did have vitiligo).

My favorite link of the week is The Canadian Explorer. Yeah, you're American. But this girl's videos are so good that I don't know why mainstream TV hasn't picked her up yet.

Shini: That's because the more they spend on books, the less they have for fast food and video games! Haha.

Bridget: That's fascinating; I didn't realize it was such a big deal in Japan partly because here in America, paleness isn't considered attractive!

Skin whitening is a HUGE part of the cosmetics industry here in Japan. It ranges from cheap stuff you can get at the 7-11, mid-range stuff is on sale at department stores and drugstores, and there are any number of bleaching procedures you can get, too.

Not to mention geisha. They paint thier faces opaque white... the fact that they are considered to be so beautiful is another reason why the white skin aesthetic is so valued here.

My family is white. My ancestors came to the U.S. from Europe. Thus, I am white and blonde. I stick out like a sore thumb here in Japan. My co-workers and people I don't even know are always touching me skin and saying "waaaa...you're so white!!" and how nice it must be to have such nice skin... yada yada yada... but really.. I just don't see the difference. I've seen Japanese people who have lighter skin than mine.

My favourite links this week include:

The beautiful fonts at http://www.sudtipos.com/fonts

http://www.sharesomecandy.com/ - which is like tumblr, but with 'curators'! A group of artists, illustrators &etc all sharing their selections. I love tumblr so this really appeals to me.

And some new things from my online window-shopping on etsy:
- Pink macaron stickers! http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=27915166
- Heart measuring spoons! http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=26269116
