The Week in Pictures: 7.10.09

Last week I promised to show you my brand spankin’ new office and here it is! It made sense to showcase it today since I’ve been chained to my computer here all week working on the 2009 Media Kit and redoing my print portfolio.
For the overall theme of the office, I was aiming for a minimal boutique feel so I painted the walls matte white and the trim matte black. My favorite part of the new setup? I took one of my old bookcases and repurposed it to display my shoes by color!
I already owned all of the furniture (everything is either from IKEA or Target) and accessories so the only cost incurred to set up the office was the paint and curtains at less than $100.00 total.

I’ve been lucky that many of the items in my office were gifts over the years. The large Nubby portrait was painted by my brother, the white bookcase was from an old store display, the large red A was salvaged from an old Honda sign and the framed red heels poster on my desk was taken off of the wall in a NYC deli. Decorating doesn’t have to cost a lot; there is inspiration lurking everywhere.
How was your week?

It's all about the ears. Nubby Mouse in full effect.

W-o-w.. I have major office envy right now! It all looks AMAZING, and I’m especially in love with your shoe bookshelf! You keep them in such great condition, maybe one day you could possible write an article on how to take care of your shoes? Try as I might, mine always end up scuffed and ruined after a year or so, so any tricks of the trade would be greatly appreciated!
i want that little cabined with the + and the question mark on it… xD
Sup, dream office. Insanely jealous!
It looks utterly amazing, Nubby. The shoe display is, of course, my favorite feature.
Looks like a very inspiring place to work in!
The glass head on top of the shoe display is awesome!!
Your shoe shelf is positively swoonworthy. Love the whole office Nubby, terrific job!
I absolutely adore the bookshelf as shoe armoire/display. Also, am so jealous of your mannequin – I’ve always wanted one like that! XOXO, MissAmy
Love the bookshelf filled with shoes! And your magazines are so neatly organized…very nice!
Also wanted to comment on the mannequin – nice touch. The collage on top of the one cabinet, is that like your inspiration board or visual goals or something significant? Or just stuff you like?
Also wondering, are you a full-time freelancer now? Because you’ve totally got the sweetest setup for that with this space.
Please tell us how you keep all your shoes looking so new! Beautiful place and space.
im sure you’ll be very happy and inspired here, it all looks amazing, love the red flashes everywhere – im so jealous! x
Lovely! I’ve been dying to see your finished decorating!
I wish i had my own place to decorate, i’m a student and renting :/! I have so many ideas for how i’d like my place!
I am so jealous of your shoe collection!
x Corrine/Frock & Roll x: Thanks! And for shoes, most of mine are repairable. Right when I buy them, if they have leather soles I get vibram put on. And I use Doc Marten’s Wonder Balsam to keep them moisturized. Also, many of those pairs usually aren’t worn on a daily basis; I have regular old sneakers for things like walking to the post office.
Christine: Pier 1 used to sell those glass heads for pretty cheap!
Danielle: It’s a magnetic board from IKEA covered with random things I like. And yes, all freelance allll the time!
Julie: I don’t wear the fancier shoes on a daily basis…I have sneakers and ‘boring’ shoes just like everyone else and that helps cut down on wear and tear. Plus I’m naturally not very hard on my stuff.
Shauna: I know the feeling after renting for many, many years! It was so annoying never being able to paint the walls and I never felt like I could buy all of the stuff I wanted because I knew that I’d have to eventually move again…it’s the best feeling ever having free reign now!
Wow, this is lovely. It’s not your typical black-white-red, it’s an entirely new modern twist and it totally speaks of your personality. Nice job.
Hey there!
I’m Jess, a longtime lurker and first time commenter. I found you through Kathryn Proulx’s blog about a month or two ago, and I must admit — I’ve been reading avidly since.
Your site is so inspiring, and your content is amazing! Especially this post — I’m in the midst of getting stuff together to move with my family to another apartment, and have been thinking about design choices for my room, so these pictures have been a great inspiration point!
Mucho Love from NYC,

It looks great! I love white walls so much. I also like the way you positioned the shoe display – I have the tendancy to push furniture up against walls
So you’re fully freelance now, congrats! Are you still doing work for nemo from home or did you leave for good?
It’s absolutely insane the amount of shoes you have! All very cool, though. Super super stylish. Love it.
And love the office. You really have great discipline in creating a cohesive theme throughout. My “office” and bedroom are the same thing. It’s hard to make a minimal and productive space. I have so much stuff.
Also, one last little thing, I almost thought I was looking at a picture of one of my shelves because I have those same magazine boxes and one of them is full of Nylon’s. I was like whoa!
Nubby, I have just moved myself, and I must say, for a freelancer you have a super tiny workspace! Where do you sketch or or scan/print? Do you have a seperate workspace for that or are you not much of a sketch person before tackling a job?
I’m very curious as to how you manage working on such a tiny desk, when i work i spread everything everywhere!
this office must be AMAZING to work in. surrounding yourself with things that you love and that inspire you is ideal.
people who go with a black/red/white theme often overdo it…but you my dear hit the nail on the head!

cmykinky: Hmm….I hate clutter so I am constantly cleaning my office and like the feel of a minimal desk! Besides that, my boyfriend and brother both have their offices in the house as well and each has a scanner and all that other stuff so I just use theirs!
