The Week in Pictures: 7.3.09

I spent part of the week in Reno and I’m so glad that I did! Previously, I’d only been to Reno for layovers on my way to Vegas but after staying there for four days and soaking up more of the atmosphere, I love it! We stayed at the Peppermill which is the coolest hotel that I’ve ever been to; the casino looks like it’s a disco out of 2050. It is completely surreal and disorienting since almost all of the surfaces are mirrored or covered in neon lights. And, the room I stayed in was fit for Liberace. Gilted surfaces, mirrors, metallic curtains, stacks of pillows on the bed…I’ve never seen anything like it.

I was in was in town for my grandpa & grandma’s 60th wedding anniversary and by the end of the trip, I’d mastered video poker! We also visited Virginia City, which is a super steep drive up a mountainside but totally worth it. It’s an authentic mining town frozen in the 1800s complete with saloons that still have massive chandeliers dripping in crystals. The typography on the vintage signs was cool as well.

I spent some time in downtown Reno at a dive casino watching an Elvis impersonator, ate tons of fried food and spent my nights going to bed while my grandma & grandpa stayed up gambling!

I never knew how awesome Reno was. Most of my dad’s side of the family has gotten married there over the years and now I can see why. It’s more charming and inviting than the over-glammed alternative of Vegas.

Hey there!
My week was nice, thanks for asking :)

I love the first picture and I must say I’ve never seen so much neon and glass in my life either.

The line “The Biggest Little City” reminds me of the Arrested Development episode where they say “The Biggest Little Mistake of My Life” haha, I forget what city they’re talking about though.

Hope your coming week is just as fabulous, take care!

Glad Reno was good to you! I’m not sure if you’re here still, but if you get the chance, definitely stop by the Truckee River through downtown. Plenty of cute little boutiques and coffee shops to keep you entertained for hours. Not to mention the interesting folk down there. And Artown (our month-long art festival) just kicked off the other day as well, if you’re interested.

As far as THE Reno night life, it’s not truly an evening in Reno until you hit up one of our dive bars, like Shooters on South Virginia. You won’t regret it.

The chandeliers near the bottom are incredible! Casinos always have great lighting features. Congratulations to your grandparents :)

Those signs are fantastic. I love old fashion signs. Good to see those nuggets with all the neon glitz photos.

Ahh! I love the photos! Reno looks amazing!! I am so happy this week because I passed my driving test!! I am an independent woman now! YAY! Off to drink it up later, moonwalk and spend all my money on shoes and clothes!

Wow, would you look at all the old signage on the boardwalk. Beautiful! Reminds me a little of New Orleans in that respect.

I went to Virginia City when I wad there too. I loved it! Did you go in the old mining cave?

PlanBVintage: You must, you must!!

Krystal: Unfortunately, I am back home in Portland now but I’ll be sure to hit up those shops next time. I was with family so it was hard to get away and do other things besides sitting in casinos. ;)

Amber: Casinos have the best of everything, mostly I think to distract us and make us empty our pockets!

Kaz: That’s the best feeling when you pass the test! It makes life sooo much more exciting!

Jaka Merriman: There were like a gazillion more signs that I didn’t get a chance to photograph…all of that vintage typography was intense!

Tessa: I didn’t get to go to the mining cave. It was super hot and my relatives prefer to gamble and drink instead. ;)

My week was absolutely unproductive (lots of assignments + projects to catch up argh)!

I love love love the typography you took in Reno! I’m such a big fan. I certainly need to visit there one day!

I read your post below relating to Michael Jackson, and I seriously thought I was the only one! I’m currently avoiding all reports pertaining to his death, and all the weird scandals that are surfacing now (like his “wife” who thinks satan is her father and his two kids are hers) because it really breaks my heart.

I felt so silly tearing up when he died, but oh well :{
I still can’t believe he’s gone either! I think I’ve always thought he was invincible or something, sigh. Anyway!

Love your blog, it’s inspiring my tons!

You’re getting SO GOOD with typography. The little “Hello from Reno” header is a thing of perfection.

» mademoiselleglitter said: { Jul 9, 2009 - 01:07:23 }

i love the hello from reno typography, too. also, reno itself seems to be a lot of fun…
