The Typofiles #23: Mohawk Via

I have a small collection of old paper sample books and the Mohawk line of Via paper is by far my favorite with its retro pop stylings.

You can view all of The Typofiles scans on Flickr here.

These are really cool and retro-looking. (I assume this is because they are old. Haha.) I love that this look is “in” right now.

Leah,
They’re not old. Mohawk Papers is in my town and they are very active and put out a lot of very cool paper promo books. They’ve worked with Marian Bantjes on the Strathmore line and its new logo. They get a different design firm for each book, so the style is very different. I’m fairly sure that VIA is pretty recent, as I have a sample notebook with very similar geometric designs for it :)

Leah Creates: I’m pretty sure that it’s a year or two old. But the style does have that fun 60s and 70s era feel to it!

I went to one of Mohawk’s paper classes this winter and all the hand outs and samples they gave us were pretty fun. If you can get ahold of it, you should check out the cover for their “Personal Best Mohawk Superfine” sample book – the cover reminds me of your style!

The pink book is a little older (2006) but there is a new Via Operator’s Manual that was released last September and is being given away along with the cool notebooks at the HOW conference in Austin right now. This whole series was designed by AdamsMorioka for Mohawk Fine Papers and Elyse is correct in that we try to give each paper grade a personality by choosing designers that “fit” the sheet. Michael Bierut recently designed for Navajo. Michael Osbourne for Beckett Cambric. Michael Vanderbyl for Superfine. (A lot of Michaels!)Marion Bantjes for Strathmore, and many more. If we have inventory left of these pieces, they can be ordered on mohawkpaperstore.com. While you are at it, check out Felt & Wire, the new blog for the paper obsessed.

Hey Nubby,

I love the type treatment you have done on your ‘The Typofiles’ heading, What original font have you used?

Thanks!
