American Eagle Laser-Etched Presentation Box

One of the coolest projects that I ever got to work on at Nemo was this laser-etched wood presentation box. Some designers don’t enjoy working with teams but for me, it’s one of my favorite things. The collaboration that takes place is super inspiring when you mix a hugely varied group of personalities. I love seeing the sum of everyone’s parts come together to create an amazing piece of work.

For this project, I was responsible for laying out the typography on the front panel, which was then laser-etched. Since I was only able to work with A’s and E’s, my goal was to create as much contrast as possible through weight, scale and serif vs. sanserif type. Thanks to the Nemo team (and Leo for the guidance!) for letting me be a part of such an awesome project!

i don’t know much about design and design choices and styles, but, i do know that i really like this!

collaborating is a lot of fun and it makes for a lot of interesting endings. when i first began taking writing courses, my prof. always made us collaborate, it used to irritate me, being i hated working in groups, but i’ve found over the years it ends up being a welcome break from your head and also from your own style, it really helps develop things!

i’d love to package my novel and project stuff in something like this, did you have a specialist firm make the box? how many did you get made, i’d imagine they were extremely expensive?

melissa dominic: Thanks! And, collaboration is a wonderful thing- as long as you’re all working towards a common goal, the outcome is usually so much better than if it had been a single person. I really feel like it helps you think outside of the box.

Kate: Only a few were made!

Richard: Sorry, I don’t have the details. But I’m sure you could Google laser etching (?) and find someone on your area? I’m pretty sure there are less than five of these in existence.

Nice- I like the varied weights and such; but more importantly congrats on nailing this solid job! Maybe I should move to Portland, hmmm…

That’s so cool! I love wood carved with typography; it reminds me of the entrance to my university’s journalism building. Nice!
